Florida prosecutors are considering filing murder charges against an unidentified Black woman who fatally shot an unarmed Army veteran in a Walmart parking lot last month.
“The case has been formally presented to our office by the Broward Sheriff’s Office,” a spokesman for the Broward State Attorney’s Office told The New York Post on Thursday.
“Prosecutors will thoroughly review all of the evidence to determine if any charges will be filed,” the spokesperson said.
Bart Diguglielmo, a 62-year-old retired staff sergeant and trauma nurse, was fatally shot at a Walmart in North Lauderdale on June 30.
The altercation began when Diguglielmo yelled at the woman for parking in a handicapped space.
Viral video shows the woman getting out of her car with a gun in her hand while talking back to Diguglielmo.
They argued back and forth for about 5 minutes. Diguglielmo appeared to follow her around a car. At one point, he raised his arms in the air before walking away.
The woman pointed the gun at his back as he walked away from her. She yelled something at him and he turned around and walked back towards her.
She shot Diguglielmo in the abdomen from a distance of about 10-12 feet away. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
After the shooting, she remained at the scene and was briefly detained. The woman told officers she shot Diguglielmo in self-defense.
Diguglielmo’s distraught sister described her brother as a decorated war veteran who served during Operation Desert Storm, according to CBS News Miami.
