Rapper Yung Miami (Caresha Brownlee) apparently got her inspiration for her song, “Spend Dat” from her mother Keenya Young. The song glorifies scammers, shoplifting and retail theft.
On Monday, a reader emailed Sandrarose.com to say that Yung Miami’s mother, Keenya, served time in prison for killing a woman while shoplifting.
According to the Miami Herald, Keenya Young, then 39, and a friend, Exzavier Robinson, were charged with first-degree felony murder, armed robbery and vehicular homicide after she struck and killed a 40-year-old security guard in Miami, Florida in 2009.
The tragic incident happened after Keenya and Robinson stole Michael Kors and Juicy Couture handbags from Macy’s and were fleeing the scene in Robinson’s Chrysler 300.
Emily Anderson was on her way home after working a shift at the mall when she was killed during a high-speed police chase. A passenger in Anderson’s car survived the crash but was in a coma for months.
Keenya said Robinson was driving, while he claimed Keenya was behind the wheel. She pled guilty to all charges. But Robinson decided to try his luck with a jury. The star witness was Keenya, who agreed to a plea deal to testify against Robinson.
In 2017, Keenya was sentenced to just five years in prison plus 10 years probation.
She served 4 years of her lenient sentence for good behavior. In 2021, Yung Miami took to social media to celebrate her mother’s release from prison.
“My Mom left me with 2 kids plus Jai. I was 22 going on 23 I didn’t know what to do I had to figure it out,” she said. “Look at me now God is so good.”
The next day, the rapper shared video of her mother leaving the prison facility as she cheered. Yung Miami also threw a party to celebrate, according to Madamenoire.
A Facebook user criticized Yung Miami’s fans for celebrating her harmful music.
The person wrote on Facebook:
“A cold piece of work. Ol’ girl’s moms actually murked someone fleeing from a shoplifting heist. And y’all celebrating this sh*t? SMFH… Yung Miami’s mother, Keenya Young, served time in prison for a fatal incident. In 2009, she was charged with first-degree murder.”
