ESPN fired Ryan Clark in the middle of a broadcast on “NFL Live” on Monday, July 20.
Network execs fired the former NFL safety during a commercial break on NFL Live. He did not return.
Sources tell The Athletic that ESPN’s original plan was to fire Clark on Tuesday morning. But after being questioned about Clark’s job status, executives feared the story would leak online and Clark would find out before they could tell him themselves. So they fired him during the live broadcast.
The timing was particularly abrupt since Clark was expected to be a big part of ESPN’s Super Bowl 61 coverage on February 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.
More job cuts at ESPN are expected to be announced on Tuesday.
According to sources, the decision to fire Clark mid-broadcast was driven by optics and damage control. But the optics of firing a popular on-air personality during a live broadcast did not sit well with viewers.

Clark’s job termination ends an 11-year run as an analyst on ESPN that began when he was still playing in the NFL.
Clark, 46, became a regular on NFL Live, Get Up, First Take, SportsCenter, and Monday Night Countdown. He earned more than $2 million annually at ESPN.
Clark hosts the popular Pivot podcast with former NFL players Fred Taylor and Channing Crowder.
Rumor has it that Clark was fired for belittling co-host Peter Schrager during an on-air debate about football. Clark told Schrager, “That’s the non-player in you.”
When Schrager pushed back and asked not to be belittled, Clark told him, “Peter, what I need for you to do is not get mad and let me finish.”
