Tuskegee University announced a new dress code that bans hair bonnets, durags and bedroom slippers in classrooms and the cafeteria.
The HBCU announced the new guidelines in an effort to prepare young people for the professional workforce.
Tuskegee also tightened restrictions on tardiness and cell phones in classrooms, theGrio.com reported.
In an email addressed to parents of incoming students, Tuskegee President Dr. Mark A. Brown detailed his expectations from students ahead of the start of the Fall semester.
Students will not be allowed to wear hair bonnets, hair nets, durags, bandanas, lingerie attire or bedroom slippers to class or the cafeteria.
According to Dr. Brown, male students are expected to wear business suits and dress shoes appropriate for professional settings.
Female students are not permitted to wear revealing clothing that show cleavage or skin below the waist.
“The goal here is not meant to restrict students from enjoying the Tuskegee Experience, but to prepare them with a solid foundation for the workforce they will enter once they leave Tuskegee,” Brown wrote, according to HBCU Gameday.
Brown also emphasized that students are required to show up on time for class and prepared to do the course work. He said the university plans to monitor attendance and tardiness more closely.
