Writer E. Jean Carroll received millions in damages plus interest from President Donald Trump after years of delays.
Trump’s lawyers cut a check for $5,625,005.48 to Carroll’s attorneys after a federal judge denied his appeal.
In 2023, Carroll, 82, won a federal lawsuit against Trump for assaulting her in a department store dressing room in New York City in the 1990s.
New York City temporarily lifted the statute of limitations so she could file the lawsuit.
The jury of six men and three women deliberated for nearly three hours before finding Trump liable. The jury awarded Carroll $5 million in compensatory and punitive damages.
Trump, 80, did not attend the 2023 civil trial, and his attorneys didn’t call any witnesses, CBS News reported.
Carroll wrote a book in 2019 claiming Trump raped her at a New York department store decades ago.
After the publication of Carroll’s book, Trump told reporters that she fabricated the story. Carroll then sued Trump for defamation.
In January 2024, Trump appealed a separate jury’s verdict finding him liable for defamation against Carroll. That jury awarded her another $83 million.
Lawyers for President Trump said they will take that case to the Supreme Court.
