A baby boy delivered by surrogate McKenna West is in critical condition after undergoing heart surgery for a congenital heart defect.
According to court documents, obtained by TMZ, Nausheen Gilkar and Omar Ahmed, the biological parents of baby Rumi, underwent a complex open-heart surgery called the Norwood Procedure.
They said in a statement, “Serious medical developments have arisen that impact the health and safety of the child. The child is in critical condition and being closely monitored at the hospital.”
The parents say Rumi’s “condition declined significantly, requiring re-intubation.”
McKenna traveled from her home in Alaska to Dallas, and gave birth to the baby on August 12. She named him “Gabriel”.
However, a judge in California, where the bio parents live, issued a temporary restraining order banning McKenna from seeing the baby or making medical decisions for him.
The TRO gave Nausheen and Omar custody of the baby until a hearing.
Nausheen and Omar asked the court to push the scheduled hearing on the temporary restraining order until a later date.
They are suing McKenna for over $100,000 for “outrageous conduct.”
McKenna, 28, made national headlines when she refused to abort the baby. West signed a surrogacy agreement giving the parents the right to terminate the pregnancy if doctors found an “anomaly.”
But she changed her mind in April when a scan revealed the fetus had a congenital heart defect called hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS).
