An Atlanta coffee shop company made good on its promise to repaint a mural of beloved anchorwoman Jovita Moore on an exterior wall.
Bellwood Coffee Shop angered Atlanta residents by painting over the mural earlier this year. Moore, an anchorwoman for Channel 2 News, died from an aggressive form of brain cancer in 2021.
In an apology message on May 1 after the public backlash, Bellwood Coffee’s owners explained that they leased the building for its new location in Grant Park. The company accidentally painted over the mural with signage advertising the new location.
The owners, who are Caucasian, had no idea how much Moore meant to Atlanta residents. So they promised to repaint the mural.
The store owners worked with Tommy Bronx, the original artist, to re-create the mural, WSB Radio explained. They also involved Moore’s family in the process.
“I truly appreciate the effort that they took to fix their wrong, and took the time to talk to Jovita’s family,” said Bronx.
Bronx said Moore’s children helped him to incorporate her favorite flowers into the mural.
“She loved roses, so when we were talking, I said ‘I’d love to have like a lot of flowers’, and they were like ‘yes, can we do roses?’,” said Bronx.
The coffee shop named a drink in Moore’s honor called the Jo-Mo.
For every Jo-Mo ordered, the shop will donate $2 to the National Brain Tumor Society through the end of August.
