Directed by Tyler Perry, Netflix‘s “Why Did I Get Married Again?” stars Taraji, Lamman Rucker, Jill Scott, Michael Jai White, Tyler Perry, Richard T. Jones, Tasha Smith and Sharon Leal.

The movie picks up from 2010’s “Why Did I Get Married Too?” during a couples’ retreat and destination wedding in Italy.

Tyler tells USA Today, there was so much to explore in “our personal experiences in raising children and aging parents. That lends itself to all of these characters having a lot more to say, so they dictated that it was time to tell the story.”

“It’s been a long time coming,” said Sharon Leal who plays Tyler’s on-screen attorney wife, Diane.

Diane and pediatrician Terry (Tyler) are now focused on their children. “Judging by the fact that they’re still together, despite having gone through major setbacks, it’s safe to say they’ve been doing the work,” Leal says.

“The friendships and their dynamics are still in place because this is a group that has chosen each other for life. Navigating through that is never simple.”

The movie plot centers around the destination wedding of Jasmine (Armani Greer), daughter of Marcus (Michael Jai White) and Angela (Tasha Smith).

Their longtime friends Dianne (Leal) and Terry (Perry), Sheila (Jill Scott) and Troy (Lamman Rucker), join them on the trip, along with their kids, plus troublemaking single guy Mike (Richard T. Jones).

Taraji’s character, Roselyn, brings a new perspective since the others “didn’t have to struggle with not having a partner for their children,” Tyler said. “Her point of view comes from a woman who raised her son practically by herself, and there is a lot of resentment for the way some of that was done.”

“I feel like we’re almost cheating,” Michael Jai White told AfroTech Culture. “What the audience is seeing, you’re seeing real relationships. I’ve known almost everybody before we even started filming. You’re watching something real. You’re watching something unique because you never really have [seen] this anywhere that I can even think of in the cinematic universe.”

Tyler added, “You’re watching the maturation of these characters, and it’s just going on screen. You’re growing with us. That’s something that we look forward to. I was just so happy when Tyler [Perry] started getting us all back together, and I think the audience is going to see the result of that.”
