My post title is a borrowed phrase from fellow celebrity blogger Fresh who oft questions the media and bloggers’ enthusiasm when one of our stars stumbles and falls before they can achieve greatness.
In this case, it’s Auburn quarterback Cameron “Cam” Newton who is from College Park, Georgia. He is being scrutinized by the media (and investigated by the NCAA) for walking around with fat pockets when he should be flat broke.
Doesn’t Cam know he’s supposed to be happy making minimum wage as a chalkboard washer as part of his school’s work-study program? These charges are so egregious (taking money to play while he’s in college) that even the FBI is investigating!
All of these accusations and investigations could jeopardize his eligibility as a player — and his claim for the Heisman trophy. Yes we’ve seen it all before. Just 2 months ago, former USC great Reggie Bush gave back his Heisman trophy after scandalous rumors surfaced that he lined his pockets with USC boosters’ cash.
While Reggie Bush’s fall from grace is still fresh in the sportswriters’ minds, they have turned their attentions to Cam Newton, 21, the leading candidate for the Heisman trophy.
How dare he violate the NCAA’s old, antiquated rules that prohibit accepting cash to play college ball, they ask.
Blame it all on FoxSports.com for initially reporting that Newton was accused of cheating on exams as well as being charged with three felony counts – one of which involved a stolen lap-top. [link].
Then there’s that mess about Cam’s father Cecil calling Mississippi State to inform them that it would take “more than a scholarship” for his son to play there. Cam later regretted his father’s decision to choose Auburn for him because “the money was better.”
Who’s to say that a former MSU player was being truthful when he said Cam was offered $180,000 in cash to play at Auburn? MSU’s head coach Dan Mullen hasn’t denied the allegations, but that could just be sour grapes because his star quarterback went elsewhere.
Cam Newton still has 3 games to play for Auburn (his team can clinch the SEC West by beating the Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday).
The question is, will the Heisman voters allow the rampant rumors and speculation to interfere with their decision to vote for Newton? Especially since nothing has been proven by the FBI or the NCAA?
One thing we do know is that Reggie Bush has forever muddied up the playing field for any black college player to be considered for the Heisman trophy. The sad part is Reggie doesn’t even think he’s black.
Rules are rules! Whether we agree with them or not, they have to be followed or you pay the consequences. IF he did take the money, he is WRONG and should face the music.
The question is… why do they target certain kids?
Minimum wage?
Auburn is a SEC school just like LSU and I know our players are WELL taken care of so I doubt he wouldn’t make it without accepting money.
You play the game and sometimes it plays you…at least he’s had time to shine and get his name out there

This isn’t the first or last to be caught taking $$ to play somewhere..I wouldn’t be surprised if this spills over into the NFL. But like it’s been said, rules are rules & no matter how tempting it may be or the fact that your family needs the $$..if you want your career to last longer than 4yrs you better keep your hands in your pockets & fill out that Burger King app.

Now on the subject. Most of the great Athletes are in proverty and come or come from rough homes or situation…
So, most people target the promising athletes with money and they take the bait.
the question is if you was in that predictament would you do the same.

They will always target certain kids, just like a perv. The problem is that these kids are too flashy. We all know who the drug dealers are in the hood, some are flashy and some stay low key and don’t wear the bling and have 22’s. Money is tempting but someone needs to teach these kids to not flaunt it so you don’t get caught. LOL.
As an Auburn Alumni Im standing behind Cam Newton however I just PRAY he is not lying! Auburn’s football coach had an emotional press conference yesterday and expressed that the school was standing by him 100%. This reminds me of when Author Blank ASKED Mike Vick about the Dog fighting and he LIED to him and it all fell apart from there. One of Vick’s biggest mistakes was Lying to Author Blank, and I didnt blame the Falcons for dropping his butt, yet the rest of the world was MAD at the Falcons for giving him the boot. Once someone stand up for you and you LIE to them its a wrap. So with that said Im a proud Auburn Alum who is praying for this young man because this may be a witch hunt however if its TRUE this could be the end of a good run.

We don’t play about college football in Alabama. One thing is for sure–There is no other player remotely close to Newton’s performance on the field this year…If they deny Cam the Heisman, we burning up some stuff. The KKK in Alabama said they’d help too..but they only burning non- white stuff

I had to come out of lurk mode for this one. I am a die hard Auburn fan and I will represent for Cam Newton til the end. I don’t believe Cam took any money. I think the agent tried to sell Cam without his knowledge, and he should be the one investigated. Cam’s parents have turned over all financial records for themselves and for the church the father is the pastor of. Guilty people would not have done that so quickly. This investigation has been going on for almost a year, but it wasn’t publicized until he became a Heisman nominee? GTFOH! They are taking about the cheating allegations at Florida, but he never went before the student council and school records are protected by federal law, so why is this an issue. Also, how can they villify him for stealing a laptop, which he has admitted to, shown remorse for and gone through the pre-trial diversion program for, so it wouldn’t remain on his record. The pre-trial diversion program isn’t an easy program to get through, and if he satisfied all of their requirements then the record should actually be sealed, but since he is in the public eye that is not an option. Whether he wins the Heisman or not it will not take away from the fact that he is the most outstanding college football player in the United States this year.

I’ve been watching Cam since high school. And these boys ALL get something whether that’s puzzy, monay, grades, whatever. He didn’t do anything out of the norm and I def. don’t believe he took a substantial amount of money. He doesn’t have the smartest book sense but he is def. a football brainiac!
Dan Mullen is an old Florida coach. He had been recruiting Cam since forever.
They just need to let him be great.

I always thought they should get paid. Whenever something is dangling in your face it makes it more tempting. They should get a stipen because it’s not easy to keep up your grades, workout/practice and play the game. These young men don’t have time for a Mickey D’s job.
F the NCAA rules! Colleges and universties make millions off of student athletes. The athletes should be given a stipend

He is the no. 1 college football player in the U.S., so they are just trying to protect their winning ticket. As an Auburn alumni you should know firsthand how serious Alabamians are about their football. Especially with the Alabama and Auburn rivalry. They are probably just trying to make sure no one Nancy Kerrigans his ass!
