Snoop Dogg says ugly women don’t sell records

I’ve grown wary of these light skin/dark skin debates. But since rapper Snoop Dogg decided to go there with yet another ignorant comment, I will go there with him. According to Hot 97’s Miss Info, Snoop Dogg said the following on women in rap:

“How many ugly women selling records? None! Only the pretty ones sell records. Beyonce, Mary J, Keyshia Cole, the ugly ones don’t sell. I ain’t gon say no names, but they don’t sell records. They just be singing their little hearts out, but they don’t get no sales, cause they ugly. Now, that’s my fault? I can see this on TV now: ‘Snoop Dogg called me, ugly.’ You beautiful on the inside, baby. What I wanna say to go on top of that, to the chocolate women, the dark-skinned women, I love ya’ll. I got a chocolate daughter at home. I always tell her chocolate is the best thing in the world….” (Source)

Please note that Snoop only mentioned the light skinned singers which he (and most of the industry) consider beautiful. Hopefully Snoop’s daughter Cori won’t aspire to be a singer since she won’t sell any records, according to her daddy.

All this issue does is serve to further divide and conquer our race when we should be creating dialogue that helps to build a bridge between the different inter-races within our African diaspora.

Is “pretty women” code language for “light skin” in Snoop’s words? It sounds so, and this is nothing new. How does he explain almost non-existent sales of someone like a Brook Hogan? What about Mya or Christina Milian? If according to his theory, “pretty women” only sell records.

You all should know by now Snoop is on some other crazy s***! I agree, Mya and Christina Milian are not million record sellers and they are both light and pretty girls. On the other hand, look at Mary J, who always sells records (and I am not by any means calling her ugly); look at Missy, too. She is always selling. I think Snoop just said this to hear himself sound like an a**-once again!

Seems like his quote is being taken out of context. As far as I know pretty does not mean light skin on the streets.lol. Mary j is not light skinnded.lol. Which further supports the theory that that may not have been what snoop was trying to say. I happen to agree with him. Pretty or Sex sells. There are several artist who get little love simply because they dont fit into that mold. Its nothing new. It goes for the male artist as well, only it’s slightly different. Little kids often want to be their favorite artist. And if she’s ugly then lil kee kee aint gone want to be her. However little boys may still aspire to be the notorious b.i.g. regardless of how he looked. Possibly because unlike lil girls who want the same clothes, hair, and body of their favorite artist, lil boys aspire for the money and fame of theirs. Talent is not required in many avenues of the entertainment industry. All it takes is the ability to push units. Tpain aint pretty but hes on top, Ciara is just alright looking yet she’s on top. Her bff Monica is beautiful and can actually sing yet??? It’s what it is. Blame the buying public, blame today’s generation who didn’t grow up on real music, blame the industry the execs, but don’t blame snoop when he’s doing nothing more than speaking the truth.

What I wanna say to go on top of that; as in, ‘while I have your attention, I love dark skinned women, I think they’re beautiful.” As if he was clarifying himself from some earlier preconceived notions that he don’t like dark-skinned sistas. He mentipned that in the same time he metioned pretty girls.

Think about it, since when would Mary J. be considered light-skinned?

It may not have come out right, but Snoop did make a point about how the mainstream, national media treats “pretty” vs. “ugly” women. Not necessarily light-skinned or dark-skinned women in videos or the music business, but Snoop of course is just coming from his own perspective as an artist. Shall we revisit the difference in the media coverage of Natalee Holloway vs. Stepha Henry? I think us fellas here have the same love for Buffie the Body & Ki Toy Johnson as we do for Melyssa Ford, Rita G or Vida Guerra. Let’s really compare media coverage of Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, Rihanna & Keyshia Cole vs. India Arie, Kelly Price, or even Jennifer Hudson (actually, she’s been working on films, including the new Sex & The City Movie).

Interestingly enough I overheard a conversation some of my students were having about Snoops reality show and how they felt his daughter was ugly. They talked about how the sons were much better looking and why did the girl have to be the ugly dark one (because men fare much better being ugly and dark). As twisted as this thinking is, it is a fact of life. We have been administering the paper bag test on eachother since slavery. There is nothing wrong w/ his daughter. Her being dark skin is not wrong and to anyone who thinks this is not his daughter you would have to see Snoops father (who is very dark) to know where Cori got her color from. Its called GENETICS people!!! 2 light skin people dont always make a light skin child, just like 2 brown skin people dont always have a brown child.

Mya, Christina Millian, Amerie, and I wish I could think of more, cause there are more. They don’t sale, and Amerie is gorgeous, so I don’t whole heartedly believe in what he is saying, but we all know the industry likes to put this stereotype of a light skin woman with long hair , that looks exotic out in the for front, and if we as the audience showed more attention to other singers like India Arie, Kelly, Jill Scott, and etc then maybe we can change it, but alot of consumers are blinded and to them songs by Jill and India dont really become our favorites, and there are people who really love them, but its not enough, basically the industry is EFFED UP.

Okay, finish. I don’t consider Mary light skinned at all. I do think image plays a major role in record sales, but for most artist its all about talent and jingles. If you don’t have much talent and can keep releasing good jingles, people will buy your records. That’s just like Mariah Carey’s single “Touch My Body” she is keeps repeating the SAME lyrics over and over. It’s a jingle. She’s not really saying anything that relates to anything particularly. Fantasia, Mary, and K Cole are selling records, because they have talent. Their albums are bangers.

And too late. Cori does aspire to be a singer. On a episode I watched, she was telling her mom she wanted to be a singer. The mom took her to the studio to meet K Cole and she was trying to teach her to sing.

I don’t know how much to truth is into the whole prospect of her wanting to sing, because the entire show is scripted. Snoop seems to want to put all his kids talents on display at ALL times. Snoops kids are “jacks of all trades.” Snoop is such a peon to me anyway, why are people still listening to a 40 year old washed up wanna be gangbanger lame like Snoop anyway. On the show, he has his own little hang out spot in a pool shed like he’s a teenager or something. Trying to act like he still in the hood. I guess he thinks that’s cool.

The problem with these washed up rappers is that when they get on a certain level they no longer live the life of hardship like folks in the ghetto (the ones the want to buy their music). Yet they continue to talk about the ghetto and the things that go on in it. I think that’s why people loved Pac so much. No matter how much money he had, he still kicked it with his peeps. He still related to the struggle of the black man in the ghetto. With the current rappers they just seem so fake after awhile. It doesn’t seem real anymore, it’s like they’re just trying to get a check. I got to give it to Snoop though. He kept his a** in the game for quite sometime.

Yes she did turn out beautiful and she could be a model. She did graduate from modeling school and did graduate from college. She chose to go into the health care profession. Am I proud that she does not use her beauty to grace a cover of a magazine? Hell yes. She can use her brains and knowledge to be on the cover of AMJ.(Ameican Medical Journal)or the CDC(Center of Disease Control). Our kids are smarter and wiser than we give them credit for. people, beauty does not equal hapiness. What happened to teaching our kids self esteem, values and morals?

@Smokie, that is true, my oldest is a combo my second is spitting image of dad and my last is mini me. When color is bleneded you never know what u will get. I am blessed wih healthy and somewhat smart kids. By not smart I mean, not smart enough to see the garbage over flowing or getting the dishes out of the dish washer. the history of black women and music is long. the perception has ALWAYS been that women singers need to look a certain way: conforming to white standards of beauty in terms of complexion, size and comportment. and yet, musicians like supremes, lauryn hill and aretha franklin managed to sell millions of records.

in addition, complexion is subjective. is mary really that light skinned? i don’t think so which shows how subject evaluating someone’s color is.

and i agree with smokie: the lite vs dark arguement IS a slave mentality.

What I said makes perfect sense. Just because you obviously missed the genetics lesson in 9th grade Biology isnt my fault. If you had been there you would know what I said makes PERFECT sense. I feel the child favors her father in some ways. Is every child born a SPITTING image of one of their parents? NO. Look at Mel B’s daughter Angel, she looks NOTHING like Eddie Murphy. Cori clearly has her fathers eyes and I believe that is his child. I never said you called the girl unattractive. We are doing this to ourselves by not supporting our artists. But let me say that I have never considered Mary J to be light-skinned or pretty so I don’t think she is making it off of looks. When he talks about the ugly singer who doesn’t sell, all I could think of was India.Arie. Most not pretty enough chicks don’t even get a shot at the industry because modern day execs who are led by their crotch areas actually think music lovers would rather look at something pretty than hear some good music.

He did state that only the pretty women singers sell records. He did not say only light skinned pretty women singers sell records. *Is it a coincidence that he didn’t name anyone dark skinned? I doubt it, he did state that he loves dark skinned women too.* I personally don’t like the fact that he generalized, he didn’t say in most/some cases or in his opinion, but made the statement like it was factual which we know it is not. Anyone can name one person on either side that will prove that statement to be untrue. I am dark skinned and I personally feel that had he named all dark skinned successful female singers, this wouldn’t even be an issue.

@ others, I never said the little girl was ugly – and anyone who even thinks that way about a child needs Jesus. I posted the child’s pic to illustrate the ridiculous point her father made. First of all, there are NO ugly female singers or rappers that I am aware of. So WHO is he talking about? It is obvious he was speaking in terms of skin color. You are in denial if you think he wasn’t. That’s why he qualified it by quickly saying he loves dark skinned women.

The reality is Snoop mentioned ALL light skin singers to illustrate his point. Mary J is not considered dark skinned.

The only dark-skinned female singers I can think of are Nicole Wray (who enjoyed moderate success in the past), India Arie (also enjoyed some success), Lauryn Hill (depending on the lighting) and Kelly Rowland (just doens’t have star quality) and I don’t think they don’t sell because they are dark – they don’t sell because the public is no longer interested (with the exception of Lauryn).

U know what some men think like this. For example My man who is bi-racial who looks hispanic asked me one night if Taye Diggs could get “it”, I said no. He paused and said “Why? You don’t like dark people?” mind you I am brown-skinned. I quickly answered angrily “That doesn’t have anything to do with it.” It offended me just like it would have offended the next african-american. He is the lightest person I have ever been with and certainly not the darkest. I just couldn’t believe he would think that would be my reasoning for not wanting to give Taye my goods. I just think Taye Diggs is a little on the feminine side, But he is a good-looking brother. It just made me think, If my man in the back of his mind think just because your dark-skinned that means you’re ugly, then what the hell is he doing with me. Did I passed the paper bag test?

I was on a dating site and a Brotha tried to holla .. and this was his actual line … “You are brownskinned and darker than I usually go for .. but you too fine to pass up” .. I didn’t waste the time nore energy responding as I was in so much shock .. I was in SHICK … When are we as a people going to stop this foolishness … My son’s father is a tad bit darker than myself I wanted me a lil chocolate fat baby boy … yet WE produced a VERY fair skinned blue eyed newborn he’s still very very light with coper colored eyes (ain’t black folk DNA just the BOMB) .. When he was born I didn’t have the tact to deal with ignorance .. And was often goin slap OFF on folk who assumed he was bi-racial … Hello .. it’s genetics .. His baby girl .. is Just that HIS baby girl .. and she is a Cutie Pie .. snoop is often quoted saying .. “he don’t love ‘dem ho-ho’s” yet he made a song called Sensual seducation to appeal to the Ladies ? ? ? I wouldn’t buy his music with a wet foodstamp … but .. thats just my humble opinion

The whole light skin, dark skin thing needs to stop period.
We are just carrying on what the plantation owners started: thinking that light is better because the light skinned and the mulattos(sp) got to work in the big house because they were closer to the master’s color, while the dark skinned had to do harder labor in the fields. This is stupid. Black people are beautiful no matter what shade; may it be butter pecan, caramel, or chocolate. I am so tired of all the hate on this site. Hatred of others and hatred of self. There has been so much hatred of Beyonce and her family on this site. And for what? Because she’s lighter? Come on. Some of the most beautiful black women I have ever seen have been dark skinned. But beauty comes in ALL shades just like ugly. If you love yourself then maybe you will learn to accept others and their differences.

I like that we Snoop Dawgs words have evoked such intellectual thought in the black community. That’s really great. Really. But, this didn’t rock my boat…at all. He’s stating his opinion…keep it completely real, he wasn’t completely off the correct mark. Everyone plays into the social constructions of beauty. It can be disheartening for one to see what a black artist does to herself as soon as she gets money. Her hair becomes bone straight and in many cases she lightens it. I think Snoop was just giving his opinion and citing his observations…we’ve all got eyes and can see for ourselves. I personally prefer India Airie and Lauryn Hill and Jill Scott and Chrisette Michelle over than I like Beyonce etc…Don’t get me wrong, I like BeyBey too…but preference is key.
