Poor Akon. Everybody’s ganging up on him these days. When you’re a platinum-selling singer whose entire career was built on an autobiographical tune titled “Locked Up” – your back story had better be a credible – and believable one.
But in Akon’s case, his bio was apparently embellished to the hilt. According to The Smoking Gun, Akon’s prison tales of being locked up for umpteen years was completely and totally fabricated.
The crux of Akon’s back story is that he was a notorious “ringleader” of a large car theft ring who was finally brought down by “snitches” within his organization. According to A, he was locked up and they wouldn’t let him out.
But The Smoking Gun could find only 2 arrests on record for car theft – neither of which led to a lengthy prison term for Akon.
Peter McFarlane, a retired FBI agent, recalls one of those arrests ten years later only because, in the trunk of the stolen BMW, was a collectible guitar valued at more than the car was worth.
The guitar (worth $100,000 at the time) was later found discarded by the side of a road still in its $1200 case.
McFarlane, 62, laughed out loud when told of Akon’s claims about running a “notorious” auto theft ring, owning chop shops, and being brought down by turncoat underlings. “Ah, this is bullshit. This guy is so phony. He’s an arrogant SOB,” said McFarlane. Asked about Akon, Brewer said, “I don’t think he had any role besides [wanting] to drive a high-dollar vehicle. And I say this because we didn’t link him to any other cars.” (Source)
