MARTA’s ‘Soulja Girl’ Getting the Help She Needs

She’s only 25 years old, but the dark bags under Nafiza Z.’s eyes tell the story of a young life blighted by psychosis, delusions, hallucinations and mania that are the hallmarks of her mental disorder.

Yesterday afternoon, Nafiza, was in the DeKalb County jail receiving the psychiatric treatment she desperately needed. But on April 7th, Nafiza was spiraling out of control on a MARTA train traveling through Atlanta’s east side.

The scenes captured on another passenger’s cell phone of Nafiza aka “Soulja Girl” terrorizing an elderly passenger – caused a sensation on the Internet and embarrassed MARTA officials who quickly issued a warrant for her arrest.

People with bipolar disorder aren’t usually that violent or aggressive even in their manic phase. They are usually more of a danger to themselves than they are to others.

Nafiza’s boyfriend Dee, with whom she has a baby son, said it more eloquently when he called into the Ryan Cameron Show on Friday, “If she wasn’t bipolar she would be the good a person on earth,” said Dee.

“That girl got a good heart. The city don’t help her, man! They just kick her back out on the streets. The city don’t help [black mentally ill] folks like that. Once you get in that [manic] stage you can’t help yourself. It mess with your mind, man. Once your mind gone it’s a wrap!”

Who really cares about her looks in this situation!!? What are you tripping on? She is mentally ill, a danger to herself and the public. What in the world are you talking about in your post? She has been diagnosed Bi Polar, what part of that are you not understanding? People like you are the reason people with mental illness have such shame, refuse to get help, refuse to take their meds and get worse! No shame should be attached to this illness at all!

She certainly needs some urgent help. People who have mental illnesses are the most difficult to treat especially when they refuse to take their medication.I suspect she also uses recreational drugs (like a lot of people her age) which would worsen her condition.

Mad props for this follow up Sandra… it’s so easy for people to see one side of a story and draw false conclusions but as with life theres more then meets the eye…
when i saw the clip i was appaled about who would act like that to such an elderly lady but “soulja girls” clearly needs help rather then having people judge her…

I’m kind of torn about what to believe. On one side, I once knew a girl that needed medicine in order to act normal. I had no idea she was on this medication. She was so pretty and nice (while on her meds).

Then through a course of a week she just started changing. One day I went over her house like any other time and she was up in her room talking to herself. Saying sh*t like she’s about to go to war. Me being clueless I thought it was a joke so I went in her to room to talk like any other time. Next thing I know she was trying to stab me with a fork. Her mother and brothers had to save me.

Eventually she ended up going to war with some girls and they jumped on her and stabbed her over 21 times. She didn’t die, but she has scars all over her face and body. She once was a very pretty girl.

My problem with this story is. It seems to me by the video she knew how far to take it. She would get up in peoples face, but never put her hands on them. Then when dude grabed her, she simmered down. Just seems like to me she was fully in control of herself and what she was going to do. As with the story I mentioned above. My friend didn’t have any self control. She wasn’t selective about what she did or said.

I guess that’s the mystery about people with mental problems.

I seen the signs that she has bipolar disorder, depression and social anxiety disorder. My major was phycology and sociology in college. She needs help asap. She should be on medication, see a therapist weekly, have an evaluation by a behavioral neurologist and have support from her family.

My fiance mood was up and down. People with bipolar will harm themselves, they are extremely emotional. One minute they are up, happy and anxious. The next, depressed, sullen and down.

I knew that my fiance had it. I made an appointment with a behavioral neurologist and they evaluated him. Indeed, he had b/p. He was upset becasue he never knew that he had it. He found out at the age of 30 years old. He has support from me and he is thankful that I have been there for him.

It is not easy being in a relationship with a man with with b/p. You have to be very strong and have patience.
I wanted him to feel so comfortable so I took the test as well. I already knew what my reults would be.

I have OCD. I clean obsessively and I am a germaphopic. That is my disorder. Think about this, how many of us are 100% normal. You may not want to admit it but we all have our own issues. A large percentage of people on our sociery suffer from depression and other disorders. We have to help each other out instead of pointing the fingers at each other. Sorry in advance for the long post, I just wanted to make a valid point.

I just hope that the city continues with wellness checkups. Scary how this escalated, her behavior was scary to watch. Knowing that she has a baby I hope more ppl keep and eye on her.

I never watched the video but I do know that a bipolar person will hurt you given the chance.

My sister is bipolar and she called the cops on me and claimed I kidnapped her children when in fact my mother and me have been raising her children for 2 years and are in the process of adopting them.

They really need to take their medication and stay on it. It really does help them.

Her mug shot does look totally different. I just hope they arrested the right person so she can get the help she needs with a lot of assistance from her family.

so she is obviously mentally ill-so what job interview do you think she is going to with this type of behavior? Who do you think would really hire her? Sometimes people are such simpletons-this girls actions clearly shows she is very ill-why else would anyone carry on in such a manner?

In a perfect world, there wouldn’t be mental illness, but this is a very valid reality for many americans, specifically african-americans.

Why do you think healthcare is such a hot topic during political campaigns-because so many people don’t have it due to cost not necessarily due to unemployment-state aid is decreasing, there are stricter guidelines to receive medical assistance-if you are a sane functioning adult and you have a hard time working within the system to obtain healthcare-can you imagine “souljah girl” trying to obtain medical assistance she doesn’t probably have the mental stability to even apply or less known keep an appointment.

Hell we have veterans living on the streets with no healthcare-get your mind right and stop buying into the institutional racism not of black and white but of the “haves & have nots”-healthcare is a damn business and if you have money you can get top-notch care, if you don’t have any money you get the minimum–did I mention most basic healthcare plans don’t provide coverage for on-going long term mental illness-crisis intervention or a bout of depression-but nothing as extensive as the treatment souljah girl needs.

As long as people like you keep blaming the disadvantage and the poor, our government can continue to get away with overtaxing us and using our money on wars instead of taking care of the needs of their own people.

Usually they don’t exhibit these symptoms when they take their medicine and their blood levels are within the therapeutic range.

sandra, i’m really glad u posted the original video and follow-up…i knew from the initial video there were mental problems…some people truly don’t understand the scope n nature of being n living as a mentally ill person…i truly hopes she gets the help n support she needs…there are so many people in the country just like her…some end up on the street, jail, dead, or in-and-out of mental hospitals…mentally ill people effect everyone in some shape, form, or fashion…

I am far from a simpleton. Lets get that straight. But if a deaf person can get a job at a customer service call center, then surely, she can go to a local cvs or walgreens and be a cashier. IMO, ppl always look for an out. Americans are the laziest ppl in the world. Black men are the only race of men who get praise for raising their own kids!! We rely on the government to take care of us, when its not their jobs to provide everything for the lazy and fearful. I’m sorry. I’m a firm believer in if u’re able (and this chick is able) then get off ur ass and help yourself. there are too many opportunities out here to be sorry and pathetic. And when u get a cheering section that helps u sit and feel sorry for yourself, thats worst.

Umm corporate America is full of people with mental issues, I know a few people I work with must be off their rockers, but they still manage to hold down a job. When I listened to the audio of the baby daddy and he was saying the city doesn’t take care of here, I was like umm.. why should the city have to take care of her? I for one, am not interested in getting more taxes taken from me.

A manic bi-polar is dangerous – DA HELL?!?!? Just because she wasn’t that day doesn’t mean she won’t be the next day! Let’s not be stupid. In the same breath, I’m glad the girl is getting help – if she is getting help. Anyone that saw that clip can tell there is clearly something wrong with her.
