And the BET Award for Singing Off Key goes to…

I didn’t watch the BET Awards in its entirety last night. But I did watch enough to hear some of the most atrocious “singing” in the history of televised Awards shows. I guess the entertainment standard is set so low in R&B and Hip Hop that no one even cares anymore.

Back in my day, singing off key was a sin that got you the hook on Live at the Apollo. An artist wouldn’t dare sing off key at Madison Square Garden, so why is it OK at the BET Awards? Artists in the 70s and 80s took way more pride in their art than these artists today.

The artists I saw last night were much more interested in how they looked than how they sounded which is a sad reflection on the industry.

It’s ironic that the main protagonist of the “less substance and more flash” style of singing (Beyonce) didn’t perform last night.

The Awards were interesting. I noticed that Keyshia was a tad bit off key and Rihanna she really needs to Take A Bow from the mic and stick to modeling.

Chris Brown performance with Ciara was HOT!!!! She make me wanna go buy them boots and dance for my man!!!

And of course…Lil Wayne performance was FIRE!!!

I cant see the picture but im willing to bet its keyshia. I love me some keyshia but I was so un impressesd with her performance. I kept trying to coach from the coach like men do when they watch football. I believe the height had a lot to do with it and when it started to come down made it no better. She tried to make up for it by crooning at the end, she was off step. I think the boots were too high. She also missed a couple of words and had to try to catch up. I was so disappointed because her cd is the bomb!! TRhianna sings exactly the way the cd sounds. no enhancements. This makes me wonder if keyshia can really sing, or was she nervous. What was going on with her sisters dress?

Didn’t watch the show, just the last 30 mins of it. Alicia Keys, I have so much respect for this talented, beautiful young lady. Her speech was magnificent, short and to the point: let us take the word “can’t” out our vocabulary. And I would have said one more thing: And love thy neighbor as thyself. Childddddddddddd if we black folks would grasp these 2 simple concepts, we would be a nation under God, indivisible! After all, we are perhaps the strongest and most talented race of people on the planet, if we could just get over our hate for each other.

As for the singing, what singing? The men, such as Ludacrois? Ridiculous and why no shirt? So ghetto! Hell, me and my old age, if I practiced enough, I could rap. Get on stage, do a little screaming, yelling, cursing, throw in a couple big-butt women for background dancing. (I would have half-naked men showing their stuff!) That’s what most younguns call talent, except of course for you SandraRose.

One last thought. Sandra, I visit this website at least once a day–good job, good job. Keep up the good work. We’ll soon have a black man in the White House. What could be more uplifting than that? As always, I leave you in peace.

i think it was the place because just about noone sounded quite right last night. and mocha every man where i was was quite pleased with alicia’s hips so i dont think its a problem there. rihanna actually didnt sound bad to me because she didnt try to overdo her performance. neyo had the best performance and wayne did his thing. i like chris brown part with ciara not so much his vocal perfomance

Conclusion: They old definitely sounded better then the new.

Did anybody see when Ashanti ran out to introduce Nelly with DL it was akward I get what they were trying to do but it made her look just plain silly…. and Rhianna looked cute of course but should probally dress up her stage just as cut with some dancers or something because she has no stage presence whatsoever… and who in the Hell thought it was a good idea for DL wack a$$ to host OMG this was the worst award show s far… I bet the MTV awards be wayyyyy better I almost feel like someone is sabatoging(sp) the BET awards LOL

Neyo was awesome. I honestly found both Usher and Little Wayne boring, but especially Usher.

I loved the Alicia performance and bringing out En Vogue, SWV (who looked a little old, sorry to say) and TLC (TBoz has sickle cell – maybe that caused her appearence?) was great! Loved the Al Green tribute and HELLO – Maxwell sounded beyond good.

On another note – Keyshia can’t sing live anyway and her mama and sister were BEYOND ghetto! Ciara can move, but I really wanted to see her perform, so glad she came out at the end. Wish my legs were 20 miles long like hers!

And did I mention Usher was boring?? I know Tameka was waiting with a switchblade off the stage, cuz his dancers were throwin’ all kinds of good good (as Ashanti said) in his face.

Usher perfomance was medicore at best, it looked as if he were lip synching. Key Key can not sing, her voice was cracking. Lil Kim could not keep her clothes pulled up and it looked like her boobs were going to pop out. Kanye came in awkward. Alicia Keys performance was nice, T-Boz voice was cracking, maybe she was getting emotional. Chris Brown and Ciara was hot. T-Pain, ugh. double ugh. Rick Ross, shave that chest asap and put a shirt on. Marvin Sapp simply wonderful. Al Green dedication was good. I love Lil Wayne’s music, but I would be okay if I did not see him on TV. Did anyone else catch him massaging Kanye’s shoulder? Overall, each year the show gets worse. Debra Lee should feel proud.

thought the show was good it was better than alot of them in the past. I think they should just stick to Monique hosting. She’s alway hilarious. I thought Rihanna sounded nice, but it was boring and she should have only done part of the song and then a more uptempo song afterwards. Loved Chris Brown. Ne-yo is a always a great performer. I saw him in concert and loved every minute. I missed Usher, so I’ll have to see the rerun. I was so disappointed with Keyshia. I was cringing at every note. But it was something up with the sound, it seemed like the first few performers were low or muffled.

I can’t see the pic Sandra, but my guess is that’s Keyshia Cole? She ALWAYS sings live off key…when she performed LOVE at the BET awards a few years ago she was singing all off key. Hopefully they learn their lesson and not invite her back to sing again. But they probably will if she has a big hit.

Beyonce was too busy filming her new movie. A buddy of mine runs a floating craft service truck. He told me he was going to the set of Beys new movie. I decided to tag along to say hi to my old buddy Idris. Sweet girl, her cousin/assistant is sweet as well. As far as the show goes I enjoyed Alicias throwback performance. I was very disappointed in Keyshia’ s performance. Why diid she wear that wig. the hair style she had on the red carpet was way better. The award for singing off key goes to Keyshia Cole. I was so embarrassed for her. She’s a cutie pie, but that child can’t sing a lick. What makes it worse is that the vocals appeared to be prerecorded and she still messed it up.

But you are right Sandra, there was a lot of bad singing going on last night. T-Boz was pretty bad and SWV needs a little practice of something because I know those girls can sing.

I thought the BET awards were horrible. When Usher opened the show I knew it was a disaster (kind of like Brittany Spears opener on MTV). I thought Keyshia Cole performance was good. It sounded like she was nervous standing up on that high pedestal; after she came down, she was fine. She is a great singer, I just wish she would take a little more dance lessons if she is going to move around on stage.

As for Frankie and the other one, they need to stop “keeping it real” and get a complete makeover. The other one jus was ready to fall off. I was embarrassed to see that.

Alicia Keyes did well. I was glad she was standing there to help TLC. T Boz seemed like she was sick, so I can excuse her performance. SWV should have sung louder.

I wanted to see Ciara do her own thing, but she did well with Chris.

Rihanna put me to sleep, but her voice has improved from SOS.

Rick Ross, I loved him, but wish he had closed his shirt because that was disgusting.

I also felt like Kanye won awards just so people didnt have to deal with his tantrums.

And lastly, I wish Ice-T would’ve been there so I can laugh at him.

I look at it like this, even though Usher has lost a few steps, I can’t dance like him. Even though Keysia Cole sounded a hot mess, she still sings better than me, and even though T-Boz looked like she just threw on a blouse and some tacky pants like she was going to the grocery store TLC is legendary (and she does have sickle cell) and YES it made me miss Left Eye soooooooo much! But all these folks are talented. They can’t hit it out the park everytime or like they used to.

I ain’t hating, but it’s so easy for folks to do it. I say get your butt up there and sing, dance, or be subjected to ridicule all the time from negative folks yapping away online. I couldn’t be a celebrity reading some of these blog comments cuz I swear I’d find a way to find some IPS addresses and hunt some folks down.

I was disappointed with a lot of their voices. I think the mics were messed up because I couldnt hear SWV or En Vouge, unfortunately I heard T-Boz loud and clear. Keyshia sounded out of breath, I’ve heard her do waaaay better. Surprisingly I thought Rhianna sounded good, well as good as she can. Al Green, ahhhhhhhhh the old school performers ALWAYS!!!!! outdo the current artists. Remeber when Gladys Knight was on there. That’s real talent right there. But he did have his pitchy moments. Usher was SOOOOOOOOOOOO forgettable, I cant tell you one thing about his performance. MY boy Ant’ny Hamilton PUT IT DOWN!!!!!!!!!!! He surprised Al, and Maxwell woooooooooooow I dont even like light skin dudes, but Maxwell can get it. Jilly from Philly always good.

I think their audio was off. Keisha’s and Alicia’s vocals were both off.

Now I’m really surprised Sandra that you didn’t point out those hips on my girl. I love Alicia I do but between that wig and those hips I was just completely distracted. My sister and I decided that maybe she was trying to downplay her own looks because Co Co (and some of the others) were so big. Co Co looked like Patty LaBelle.

Yeah Quincy Jones was rambling, I was cracking up. Especially since on the video tribute Luda said everytime he see’s Q, Q always has about 20 stories to tell. So he must do that alllllllll the time LOL!!!!

I would ramble too if I was 71 or 72. To make it this far in life being able to do the things he does musically and still going is an amazing feat. He almost broke into tears at the end of his speech. I also think Al Green’s performance shook them old bones up, cause for a 32yr old female such as myself, Al had me going as soon as he touched the mike! lol

sandra you truly don’t believe that keyshia was better than alicia. it’s because she reads the blog right??? she was god awful..missing notes..missing timing..she was just d*mn off…and the lil kim appearance didn’t make it any better…alicia was off a little but, not as much as keyshia…however, bringing out the ladies of the 90’s was hot!!!!

My favorites from last night were Jeezy’s, Ne-Yo, Al Green Tribute, MArvin Sapp, T-Pain, Nelly & Lil Wayne.

Keyshia Cole- I like her but, last night wasn’t her night.
Alicia Keys- Although she brought out some of our favorite female groups, she didn’t sound good last night.
Usher- For that performance to be the opening act it was weak and to top it off he was lip synching.
Chris Brown’s performance was just okay and it was short.
Rhianna- like someone said she needs to take a bow from the mic.

Okay so just for the record Alicia Keys did her thing out there for bringing in the old school ladies. I don’t know what happen to Keyshia Cole why her voice sounded like that it just sound like she just wanted to play and jump on the stage. I love her music so much though no matter what just not sure about her performing live though. I love the tribute to Al Green he really look good to be as old as he is though. I’m not sure about these awards in past years the really was tight but this year they seemed a little off the scripts was crazy and half the ppl that won was not there. Like why do they keep doing the athlete of the year award and they never show up. That is in my opinion that is how I feel about it

ok, SWV, TLC, and En Vogue performs. oh Hell naw!! Xscape needed to be up there, and should of been given props where props is due. those girls should of been up there and shut that shit down. I tell ya they keep sleeping on this group. whether they are together or not. SWV was broken up and regrouped to be on stage to perform. the same with En Vogue, to have all the members.

And T-boz sounded like she drinks pepsi and smokes Cigarettes.
