Fan Mail: Fox News calls Michelle Obama “baby mama”. Isn’t that what she is?
Since Tuesday my inbox has been flooded with emails from readers outraged over Fox News calling Michelle Obama a “baby mama”. Isn’t that what she is? It’s already been established that Fox News is a racist network. But don’t we refer to women as baby mamas – even women outside of our race?
How can we be up in arms over a derogatory term that we use to describe our own women 24/7? This is the Don Imus controversy revisited. Hypocrisy at it’s highest level! I’m tired of black people throwing mud on our own culture and then getting angry when other people do it.
If we had respect for ourselves, no one outside of our culture would dare disrespect us! We give implicit permission to non-people of color to treat us with disrespect when we disrespect ourselves on a daily basis.
Maybe we should stop complaining about what others are doing to us and start showing them how to treat us. Lead by example or fall back!

I understand the point of your post Sandra. But I have to disagree, they are being disrespectful and people should be OUTRAGED. Michelle is far more than a “baby momma”. Racist doesn’t stop at the networks though – depending on the media outlet – OBAMA and supporters have more to look forward to when it comes to statements like these. Bi-racial or not in the eyes of White America he is a BLACK man to close to being President. This is just the tip of the iceberg, watch how the next few months go.
Why are we surprised?!?…Fox News is the same station that called the Barack and Michelle’s fist pound a terrorist threat.
It’s not so much what is said..For me it’s more about intention. She is in fact his “baby mama”. However, in this case it appears that the intention is actually to be offensive..and so..she/he should be offended. Why didn’t they refer to McCain’s wife as such? Coincidence? I think not.
I understand your statement about respecting ourselves, but to me a “baby momma” is an unmarried women with a child by someone. The “baby momma” term is not a positive view, so therefore I think they were out of pocket by calling her that.
She is going to be a “baby mama” sitting up in the White House too! LOL

We know that television news shows make it evident who they support by the bullsh!t they say, that’s a given.

I don’t think the term baby mama is necessarily a negative connotation. It is what it is. Michelle is Barak’s “baby mama”. She is the mother of his babies. Didn’t we settle this negative/positive label thingy when Fantasia had that song out a few years ago?

I too agree that the term ‘baby mama’ was used to describe a female who is only the mother of a man’s child and not married to him. in this case, Michelle Obama is MARRIED to Barack so therefore she is not his ‘baby mama’. So I would see why people would be mad about the use of that statement because I’m sure they would’nt call Laura Bush or even Mccain’s wife that.
The following are baby mama’s: Kim Porter, Shaniqua (50 Cent), Mel B. (Eddie Murphy), and some of the girls around my way.

Just the other day I was watchin and they were talkin about the comment that actress Susan Sarandon made about if Mccain wins she will leave the US permanently and they were laughin talking bout, “we’ll pay for her ticket to leave, good riddance”. And the one news anchor said “if Obama wins, you wont see me trying to leave the US, i’ll just HAVE to stay and stick it out even though i dont agree w/anything he says”
Everyone has basically said what a baby mother is, so i’m not going to get into that part. But this is what FOX does. I didn’t see it, cuz i don’t watch that piece of garbage.
They’re scared cuz they KNOW there’s a chance the brotha will be president. So they inject fear into their audience. Its what they do…..I’m not the least bit surprised.

Maybe you should email Fox News and clarify the terminoloy for them. They are parroting us. They are using our own derogatory expressions against us because we – by our own actions and behavior – have given them implicit permission to do so.

First of all, it should be “Baby’s Mama” not “Baby Mama”, same as “baby daddy”. (Most black folks are lazy when it comes to speech.) Second, Faux News is beyond racism. Did you see how Faux correspondent E.D.Hill(white female) recently referred to a photograph of Obama and his wife bumping fist as a “terrorist fist jab” WTF? Eloquent Obama and beautiful, highly educated, slender Michelle, terrorist? Let me give you another prime, in-your-face example of racism. The day Obama declared himself a winner of the Democratic ticket, the next morning, Yahoo News posted just 3 pictures on their website: a large pic of McCain on the left, large pic of Obama on the left, then right beside Obama is a real small pic of a thuggish-looking black man with the caption: thief is caught red-panted. thug: their favorite adjective when describing black men)

i am a baby momma to my oldest daughter’s father and i am my husband’s wife even though we have a baby born of the union. BUT before he and i got married though i was the baby momma to both of them.
but obama made ole shelly his wife BEFORE they had chiren so fox was outta line. that is why it is offensive. b/c they are the rare black couple that does what society deems is the right way to have a family.

It astounds me that you think the term “baby mama” used in any context is a proper way to address someone’s mother. Now you want to apply rules to the proper use of “baby mama” when you know full well you used it before to describe even married women.

I must confess, this is one story I was hoping you would not post (Sandra). I have been listening to the arguments all morning on the radio, and then at work. Understand, I work in a federal building on 200+ with only 7 total blacks in the building(.), oh and 5 hispanics, 1 arabic. I am the only person of color who is under the age of 40. So, I was polled all damn day about the meaning of “baby mama”. So, please forgive me if all I have to add is rants and raves about using terminology we do not want others to use. I do not like the term, not now, not ever. Especially, when that stupid “baby daddy” song used to be out! Okay, feeling like I can go home and hug my HUSBAND now.
