Video: Is Barack Obama Black or Biracial?

The historic nomination of Sen. Barack Obama for the Democratic nominee for president of the United States has sparked a healthy debate over whether Obama is the first black or biracial Democratic nominee.

My answer will always be that Obama is the first biracial man, or person of color, or African American, to be chosen the Democratic nominee. Obama is the product of two races therefore I respectfully acknowledge both races.

To those who say the white man calls biracial people black, my response is that the white man calls black people niggers too. Are we going to accept that or should we educate them?

Some people will vote for Obama based upon his qualifications to run this country, and not based on the color of his skin. But the media is always going to make his skin color the focal point right up until the general election in November.

    Miss Sandra you know I thought of you when I saw this story on CNN. The media needs something to talk about I guess. There is no question that Barack is biracial. He calls himself black and he is black. Like one of the commentators said, he could have decided to call himself white if he wanted to, but that will not change what people see when they look at him, which is a black man.

    I don’t want to rehash this argument so I will go on record as saying he is a biracial man that is black in appearance. Not all biracial people are black in appearance. Rashida Jones, looks white. I think Rick Fox’s mix has created a man who appears latino. Michael Warren’s son (Jessica Alba’s baby daddy) looks stone cold white. Some could go either way like the dude on Prison Break and Lisa Bonet’s baby daddy.

    In my opinion Barack will be the first black president even though he is biracial.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!!! I am officially middle-aged.

    Here the media goes with more bullsh*t again…Barack has already refered to himself as being African American so why do we need to debate this man’s race, hell he married a sista and his children are black…Why in the hell is white Amerikkka sparking the race debate when they practially created the one drop rule to begin with, they know good and damn well that Obama can’t classify himself as nothing else but black becasue he’s not white enough to be one of them, and they wouldn’t accept him anyway.

    They need to STFU! And let the man be, but of course they’ll ride this issue until the wheels fall off, anything to pull him down.

    can’t we just say bobama is a man of color? that would also help identify him with his half asian sister too. i have heard asians referred to as people of color before. that would take the race thing out of the picture since color could be anything…pink, purple, black, white.

    oh wait is “of color” offensive? idk just asking…

    when bi-racial becomes an official choice on a census form then bi-racial will be considered by the government a race in itself.

    Does it really matter? they gave black people a general name, what in the hell does black mean? We are africans and all africans aren’t even classified as the same race-it’s basically where we came from

    hell black isn’t a race just a name created by white america to describe our skin color and our place in society-

    some africans don’t even consider themselves black or african americans

    Let me tell you what I think, because Obama is intelligent and beat out mrs. snow white (hillary) with his successful campaign-white america is doing what they have always done, trying to take credit for his success. Basically if he was entirely black he would not have been able to achieve what he has done, it’s his white half that attributes to his success

    LOL-dayum the BS-He’s a man and he genuinely seems to be for the people-all people and like always there trying to divide us-racism is beneficial to the government-imagine if we did away with race altogether and united what would happen then?

    Obama is the man we need to take the focus off of race in our govt-OBAMA 08!

    Yeah I can elaborate-worked at a health center that treated women who were from AFRICA had there genitals mutilated because of a ritual, when the receptionist referred to them as black they adamantly stated that they were in fact not black. We don’t call ourselves black-the woman said-not what I heard from someone else but what I witnessed personally.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    very good point! you wouldnt necessarily see people in africa saying they`re black because their first identity is the tribe where they come from, some countries have more than 100 tribes withing the territory so identifying yourself as black when you`re already black doesnt make any sense, almost like having a debate to know whether the snow is white!
    Sandra I sooooooo agree with you on this one. He’s NOT black. He is Bi-racial. One thing that bothers me so much is to see someone act so ignorant and categorize someone to be something they are not. People like that are just plain ignorant, and yes I mean all of you who say Chinese when you see an ASIAN person…Mexican when you see a SPANISH person..Iraqi when you see someone from the MIDDLE EAST and Black when you see someone of color, and etc. If you are not sure…be BROAD. I’m not sure a lot of the time so I try to be broad and not be ignorant or offensive. Seriously…it DOES MATTER. Sandra you are right, we should CORRECT THEM. Let them know…”HEY, he’s one of YOU too, so stop all of the hatred just because he has a little melanin in his skin” which is absolutely NORMAL by the way for the racists who thinks it’s normal to not have any melanin in your skin. (If you know what I mean)
    @ intensemocha….that was some deep stuff you said about them bringing this up because they are trying to claim Barack now because it’s not possible for a black man to do what he’s done. GREAT observation, because that’s how it really be sometimes.
    How does what another person calls or classifies themself affect your day to day life? I understand what you are saying but at the end of the day…how does it affect your world. Do you lose sleep because someone may be biracial but identifies themselves as black? HOw about this then…If you weren’t born in Africa you cannot identify with African American but only as American. How can you lay claim to a place you have never been??
    This is lame…
    yall need to really study Anthropology. Race is a false concept created by European Anthropologists who wanted to categorize people based on phenotypes, aka physical appearances and not their actually cultural heritage or their dna make up.
    For instance there are Australians that have dark brown skin and broader noses, light hair, but they would be considered black in america, but their not black they are Australian….
    RACE is a false concepts Africans are African they are Masaai they are from whatever tribe they are from, they dont all speak the same language, or dialect
    Read a Book.
  32. 32
    luxe.li. says:
    My ancestors are from AFRICA thats what I believe, but I dont truly know that unless I get a DNA test, so until I find out where I am really from I can’t 100% say I’m African descent, everyone is from Africa. Study Hominids….I mean really. So everyone has African descendants, some descendants are more recent. If I have slave ancestry then I consider my heritage that of Africa. Just like white people always talking about how they family is IRISH (never been to IRELAND) how they are part Italian, Part Dutch…etc.
    White people always part something, they always acknowledging their heritage…
    We as Black People, need to research our heritage.
  33. 33
    luxe.li. says:
    One more observation
    Do you know how offensive it is to ask someone What Are You? I have a friend who is Chinese and White and she tells me she hates when people ask her What Are You? She says I’m Human, then they ask What Language Do you speak, and she says English,
    Not every Asian person is Chinese
    I have a lot of Korean friends who find offense to that
    Chinese is not just a language, not all Chinese people speak “CHINESE” its different dialects, some people speak Mandarin, some speak Cantonese….
    I have friends who are WEST INDIAN, DOMINICAN but of-course they look “BLACK” and not ever Caribbean person is from JAMAICA.
    You have Antigua, Trinidad and Tobago its more than just Jamaica…
    Yeah Im ranting because people are very ignorant.
    stefany says:
    I feel the race question can have a two part answer..A person can be biologically biracial and socially another race…You can be biracial but socially identify more with your black or white side depending on how you were raised..And sometimes how a person identifies depends on how lite or dark their skin, hair, or eyes are..Most biracial people look like lite skinned blacks..And when you don’t have the complexion for the protection white society will let you know quick, fast, and in a hurry that you’re not one of them..Biracial people should have the right to choose their ethnicity because of their lack of acceptance in society.
    I feel that being biracial Barack can classify himself black and still embrace his biracial/white heritage..But it really shouldn’t matter because his race has nothing to do with his leadership ability and should not be in question, I’m voting for Obama regardless.
    Dizz says:
    The bottom line is NO ONE is 100% Pure…we’re all mixed with something. I live for the day when race isn’t such an issue in the U.S. People always have something to say about race but never anything to say about how to fix problems such as homelessness, starvation, health care, single family homes, gas prices, education etc. There are more pressing issues in the world than how one classifies themeself.
    @snootypooty1
    I am bi-racial also…but thankfully grew up in Canada where this is not a ,major issue. I’ve only had to really address being bi-racial since moving to the u.s. and more so since I moved to the south. I can’t even imagine growing up in this country bi-racial, as it seems to really be a hot topic. I highly doubt white folks care what we call ourselves…
