Barack Obama Covers New Yorker Magazine

Why is everyone offended by this New Yorker cover depicting Sen. Barack Obama wearing his ancestor’s traditional clothing? Can we find a worthwhile battle and stick with that instead of jumping all over the place on this racist media issue? We already know the media’s coverage of the presidential campaign will be saturated in racist imagery.

I told you that they would come for Obama because he’s a biracial man running for president. Get over it and focus on the positive instead of the negative.

I hate how ignorant America has become. They are really showing their true colors.

The threw hissy fits about his “PASTOR” until the man separated himself from the church all together. Now this.

Am I alone in thinking that Muslims don’t have pastors?

I saw this and I’m thinking, This sh!t ain’t real! Someone doctored this up and said this was the July 21st cover of The New Yorker!” But lo and behold- it’s real sh!t: http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/toc/2008/07/21/toc_20080714

This is this bullsh!t propaganda that people will put out to prevent a Black man from obtaining the highest position in the world! This is bullsh!t and SR should be ashamed of every replicating this ignorant crap!

Ancestor’s traditional clothing?! Hmm, and I guess Army fatigues and a machine gun is the traditional clothing of Chicago.

…I almost called you the b-word SR.

No I’ve seen it too… I’m talking about the caption under it. She’ll fight for Rihanna, Tiny & Monica but we’re supposed to fight about something more worthwhile? Like what? Whether Zoe Kravitz is a fashion icon? Please… If we dont fight for our own, who will?

But did you peep the American flag in the fireplace!? I mean, come on! I’ve see political satirical cartoons before, but this is WAY over the line! I’m sorry!

Bet you they won’t put McCain on the cover lynching some Asians or Iraqis!

This cover is over the top and you know it Sandra. I am starting to wonder whether your commentary is genuine or for the hits and site buzz. Do you really think the cover is fair? We all know Senator Obama is going to face an uphill battle but the media is really going over board and yes if and when he is elected it cna truely get worse. I think though that as supporters people need to rally and speak out against images depicted as the above. There is a difference between a satricial cartoon … a joke and a downright offensive remark or image. This is just as bad as the Yazmany Arboleda art gallery. Baracks’ campaign has responded to this in a tasteful manner and I applaud him, his family and staff for remainign focused on the goal at hand. The political arena is a sure circus.

Remember people the best revenge is success so PLEASE GO OUT AND VOTE IN NOVEMBER

    PAHairston says:

Get over it my ass! This is total disrespect to Obama, his wife and all Americans, black or white. Our young men are dying in Iraq and Afghanistan and they pull this bulls***? I realize it’s satire but they’ve gone way too far. Hell, white America just ain’t ready for a black President, most can hardly stand having a black supervisor. Peace.

    ON TO MORE IMPORTANT NEWS:

On his campaign bus recently, Sen. John McCain told reporters, “I hated the gooks. I will hate them as long as I live.” Although McCain said he was referring only to his prison guards, there are many reasons why his use of the word “gook” is offensive and alarming.

It is offensive because by using a racial epithet that has historically been used to demean all Asians to describe his captors, McCain failed to make a distinction between his torturers and an entire racial group.

It is alarming because a major candidate for president publicly used a racial epithet, refused to apologize for doing so and remains a legitimate contender.

I completely agree. The fact that this ridiculousness was published in the New Yorker. There are certain publications that I would expect this mess from but from the New Yorker. Wow. I thought the magazine was more up on class but I guess not.

Osama over the fireplace. I mean white folks are scared.

Carmen, tactics like that are often used in wartimes. Supposedly it makes it easier to killand they are less than human when they are refer to as ‘Gooks’ and ‘Skinnies’ and ‘Towel Heads’ and ‘****s’ too.’

    MissR2008 says:

If the only thing you see when you look at this cover is the fact that he is dressed in traditional garb, you need your eyes checked! They are playing directly into every stereotype and lie every said about the man. He and Michelle are standing in the oval office with a photo of Osama Bin Laden hanging over the mantle, the American flag burning in the fireplace, Michelle looking militant and abrasive toting an Ak over her shoulder…I could go on and on..We don’t need to get over this. Whoever okay’d this cover should be FIRED! Its not funny in the least, and I don’t see it as satirical, either. Its ashame. They will do anything to keep the white house ‘white’….

He should have left that during his wartime then. Its a war that we lost and he can leave those words in his past…. He is running for Presidency of a country that has many different cultures that make it up. He is not killing anybody anymore so, he needs to leave those tactics in his past. If he still has post-war mental issues then, he may need to find another profession is all Im trying to express. My dude still has nightmares from Iraq…. so, I sympathise… he surely would not be best suited to represent people from that region anytime soon.

Black people need to stick together because its about to get rough. This is nothing compared to what they’re about to do with him over the next months running against McCain. I swear this is racist, and we as americans shouldnt tolerate this behavior, what happened to the days of protest and black people standing up for whats right.

    starr says:

Most people arent’ going to like what i’m going to say about but I’ll be da one with a diff opinion

The cover is actually suppose to be a satire. If you don’t know what i mean, its basically the way the media made a big hoot about the barack and michelle’s fix bump. the way they make an issue about how he’s muslim and so forth.

    *quickly runs out*

  22. 22
    HunE916 says:

    @ Starr

Point taken, however, Americans aren’t that smart!

I can guarantee you the majority of the people who view this cover will be say, “See, I knew he was a terrorist!” versus “Wow, it is really silly of us to think he’s an extremist radical”.

The New Yorker is a liberal magazine and for those readers, they will get the point that this is a poke at the stupid people who actually feel this way about the Obamas. But for the rest of the millions of people who will see this in their inboxes and favorite blog sites, it will do the complete opposite. Sorry!

    @ Hun

I understand your point, and its the only reason, I don’t like the cover. Your point is very well taken. After the one of those primaries (don’t know which one), some of the townspeople actually said they didn’t vote for him because his middle name is hussein, so we all know they are some people who won’t understand the cover.

    1. the flag is burning

    3. they portrayed Michelle as a Black Militant Leader
    4. the terrorist fist jab as they refer to a pound as
    5. Obama dresses in garb, but to Americans who are so stereotypical, this imagery scares them

Sandra turn on the news and realize whats going on….please

    luxe.li. says:

ALSO!! no one realized it was Satire when CNN went on the street and asked people what they thought of it

I guess no one was offended by CNN Politics portraying Obama as a monkey in one of their caricatures, and there was another caricature done where he was portrayed as a monkey and bananas

lol man, im glad the my generation is the future cause some people act like they have never cracked open a book in their lives

  34. 34
    luxe.li. says:

to anyone who says this is a satire, realize that America’s history is based on racism and physical phenotypical racism, Americans aren’t that smart, they judge based on visual appearances.

FOR example, bin Laden is responsible for the 9.11 attacks, because Bush was so focused on Sadam, 70% of Americans believed he was responsible for 9.11 attacks. I mean take a global history class, take an anthropology class and learn where racism originated, study saarjtie bartman, I mean how can you just shrug this off??

DONT GET ME STARTED I’LL SHUT THIS SITE DOWN, IM SUCH A LIBERAL lol

Sandra, honestly what is with you lately. You praise RI RI and these unwed rapper/RB Singers for their actions, clothing, and lifestyle but you are harsh on Obama’s children, and then you post these offensive articles! It makes me wonder what the purpose is. As a people, we have an opportunity to rise to a glass ceiling that we have never ascertained and my ancestors were beat, raped, mutilated, discgraced and degenerated generations to come and you seem to play into this stuff by reporting this hateful stuff just like any FOXNews stations would that says blacks should just get over it! On one hand, you are mad at Jesse for calling him a half breed, but then the White New Yorker can sell this and we should just get over it??????? Please help me understand the logic!
