Throwback Mondays: Lauren Hill – Doo Wop (That Thing)

Let’s close our eyes and imagine a world before Lauren Hill lost her damn mind behind somebody else’s twig and berries. A world where Lauren Hill was the answer AND the question that left no doubts. In a perfect world, Lauren would be queen and Tupac Shakur would be king. Now open your eyes…

I never knew twigs and berries could be that addictive.

damn it i’m just so dang hurt about lauren hill’s musical demise to this day! i talk about how much i miss her and her incredible presense in the industry at least once a month. there has never been a better more versatile and beautiful almost genious female artist since her and i don’t think there ever will be. man her lyrics, her style, her voice, her flow. DAMNNNNNN! she graced us with her art for that short while and then left her mark. she’s such an aquarius! it’s that damned man she hooked up with. UGH!

    “SuperStar” by Lauryn Hill

Come on baby, light my fire
Everything you drop is so tired
    Music is supposed to inspire
How come we ain’t getting no higher?
    Now tell me your philosophy
On exactly what an artist should be
Should they be someone with prosperity
    And no concept of reality?
Now, who you know without any flaws
That lives above the spiritual laws
And does anything they feel just because
There’s always someone there who’ll applaud

Come on baby, light my fire
Everything you drop is so tired
    Music is supposed to inspire
How come we ain’t getting no higher?
I know you think that you’ve got it all
And by making other people feel small
Makes you think you’re unable to fall
And when you do, who you gonna call?
See, what you give is just what you get
I know it hasn’t hit you yet
Now I don’t mean to get you upset
But every cause has an effect

Come on baby, light my fire
Everything you drop is so tired
    Music is supposed to inspire
So, how come we’re not getting no higher?
I cross sands in distant lands, made plans with the sheiks
Why you beef with freaks as my album sales peak?
All I wanted was to sell like 500
And be a ghetto superstar since my first album, Blunted
I used to work at Foot Locker, they fired me and fronted
Or I quitted, now I spit it – however do you want it?
    Now you get it!
Writing rhymes my range with the frames slightly tinted
Then send it to your block and have my full name cemented
And if your rhymes sound like mine, I’m taking a percentage
Unprecedented and still respected when it vintage
I’m serious, I’m taking over areas in Aquarius
Running red lights with my 10,000 chariots
Just as Christ was a superstar, you stupid star
They’ll hail you then they’ll nail you, no matter who you are
They’ll make you now then take you down
And make you face it, if you slit the bag open
and put your pinky in it, then taste it

Come on baby, light my fire
Everything you drop is so tired
    Music is supposed to inspire
So, how come we ain’t getting no higher

but it’s kinda what makes her an icon or a legend. it’s that mystery, that mistique. that that, “that thing, that thing, that thiiiiiiiiing!” LOL!

    she was The TRUTH!

    Bird says:

I never thought of it, but a poster in a thread on some blog stated they thought Lauryn was in the throws of postpartum depression and hasn’t stopped having babies long enough to get through it. It makes sense and gives me hope that one day, after she is done having kids, she will get better. I pray that is the case and that she will stop soon so we can get somemore music.

Between this fabled world and avidity industry, it’ll never be possible to have such great music as it once was but unfortunately, we still have very few who stands at the best but is scattered because of what it is or simply a dose of those “twigs and berries”..

Lauryn is definitely the ish! Who remembers the concert at the Fox in like ’98? I was only about 16, but it was the bomb my best friend and I still talk about that today.

I miss lauryn but she would have no place in today’s music..too much talent..however jamine Sullivan is a good surrogate for me right now

I absolutely love Lauryn Hill…I still like watching Sister Act 2, and I feel like the nun who is eavesdropping and gets goose bumps watching them sing “His Eyes Are on the Sparrow”…

Mocha (#21) I love that song as well, but I thought Lauryn Hill was sued because she did not give credit to those who wrote music on her 1st album, and they settled out of court…
