On Friday night, a single popping sound heard during Jermaine Dupri’s “Welcome To Atlanta” party in Decatur was transformed into a man down situation with multiple wounded and gunmen “shooting up the club.”

Every media outlet in Atlanta reported wildly varying accounts of the popping sound. But not one media outlet got the story right.

A NY Daily News reporter reached out to me yesterday to get the accurate story. I told her the popping sound was just a speaker malfunctioning. But in the end, she decided to go with the more melodramatic story provided by WSB 2 Action News which reported that “three people” were treated for gunshot wounds at local area hospitals. I guess my account wasn’t gory enough.

Celebrity blogger Necole Bitchie at least reported what actually happened without sensationalizing the story like the “real journalists” did.

By yesterday afternoon, the casualty list had been downgraded to just one security guard who was “grazed on the elbow” by a bullet. That story is even more ludicrous than the first one.

How does a gunman fire into a crowded club – from a distance of a few feet – and only one person is “grazed” on the elbow? Where did the bullet go after that? OR was it one of those magic bullets that turns corners and avoids hitting everyone in the room only to magically disappear into thin air?

Here’s Webster’s dictionary definition of a “graze”:

“to touch or rub something lightly, or so as to produce slight abrasion, in passing…”

That’s right, “a slight abrasion” – you know, like the type of scratch that one would receive in a crowd where there’s pushing and shoving going on?

Do you really believe the police would allow a party to continue until 4 AM if someone had been shot inside the club?

I agree with the inside source who surmised that these wild shoot-em-up stories are the work of individuals bent on “sabotaging” Jermaine Dupri’s Summerfest weekend.

If you recall, there was also a “shooting” at the So So Def Summerfest Finale party last year at a now defunct club in Decatur. No charges were ever filed in that “shooting” either.

By the way, tonight’s So So Def Grand Finale party is at the Velvet Room. But don’t worry, the only sound coming out of the Velvet Room’s high end audio speakers will be music.
