7th-Grade teacher to students: Obama is a ‘N’-word. Angry parents in the northwest Florida community of Marianna want a middle school teacher fired after he put the “N”-word on the board to describe Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama. The Marianna Middle School teacher, Greg Howard, is now serving a 10-day suspension after writing an acronym on the dry-erase board on Sept. 26: “C.H.A.N.G.E. – Come Help A N*gg*r Get Elected.” But many parents want the 17-year teacher fired. The seventh-grade social studies teacher’s class has 17 White students, six Black students and one Asian student. Initially he was suspended for the day without pay, but that was elevated to the 10-day punishment. He must also write a letter of apology to students. “We feel like the punishment is sufficient,” Larry Moore, superintendent of the Jackson County School District , told The Detroit Free Press. “We did not feel he had to be fired.” NAACP officials say they will reserve their actions in the case until their investigation is complete. Audrey Wad, who has nieces and nephews at the school, didn’t need any more information before expressing her outrage. “To me, it’s hurtful,” she told the Free Press. “The idea that he would impose his political opinion on the children is wrong to me. That’s where he crossed the line.”

I don’t know the context of how he said it, but whether he was expressing his own racist views or pointing out the racist views of people in America he definately let the kids know racism still exists at a time when many people are pretending it doesn’t and throw out the phrase “race card” when people complain of very real racial discrimination.

I don’t think this is an issue regarding this teacher imposing his political opinion on the students. This is a question about judgement. This teacher should have known that a statement like that is inappropriate. I don’t think the teacher should be fired because he put a racial slur on the board; I think the teacher should be fired because he lacked the judgement no to put it on the board.

The most ridiculous thing about this was when the news spoke to his students, they interviewed a black kid. This was not by mere happenstance. This little ingnoramus said the teacher was just playing, he likes to joke around and there is nothing wrong with what he said. It is a sad day when our kids can not recoginze that some folks are insulting them.

That is not the whole story and I don’t feel like looking it up. The class could have been discussing racism in the current presidential race. The teacher may have said, “I actually saw this on a reputable web site.” Or maybe he said, “I’ll tell you what I think about Obama’s campaign slogan.” That is what I mean by context and Sandra’s brief recap, while highly inflammatory, doesn’t give the full story so I can’t assume anything. That’s all I was saying.

It’s a sad situation all the way around. How is suspension the answer? He needs to be fired and have this as a permanent mark on his record. If the parents of the students (black, white, or other) don’t take a stand against this issue, this kind of foolery will be tolerated everywhere. Even if this is truly how he feels, he should have kept it to himself.

I concur….this article does not give the full context of the situation….I too have rec’d it as a text message SEVERAL times…..perhaps he was just talking about it…….but yes it’s 2008….and obviously some people still don’t get it that you can’t say it/spell it/think it…….DUH!

i got that in a text message months ago. i’m sure one of his black friends sent it to him….the person who sent it to me was on the floor laughing. everyone she sent it to was highly offended and didn’t find any humor in it.
