India.Arie Covers JET Magazine

India.Arie Is On a Mission

Talented artist tells why she almost quit the business and how her new love helps her heal. Two years ago Grammy Award-winner India.Arie almost walked away from the music industry. She grew tired of the competition, the need to have her music categorized, and, as she calls it “the politics of the music industry.” “I was planning on what to do with my money, what I would do to make it grow. I really was going to retire,” she told Jet magazine.

But after much reflection, the passionate artist made peace with the music industry on the liner notes of her latest CD, Testimony: Vol. 2, Love & Politics. “I’ve learned that music is a challenge, not a competition. I released the fear of chart positions and album sales, and reconnected with the love of music and the love of the listener and the love of myself again.” (p. 36)

The truth will always be my favorte India Arie Song. I love her music but my mother who is no fan of “neo soul” was sitting in my car on Sunday and took her cd out claiming it was skipping. I just listened to it and not a skip.

@tstiles, her mother is her stylist and designer. I’ve grown and healed so much listening to India as she does the same with each of works of art. I just copped Testimony Vol. 2 and am trying to connect with it. If any of you are in ATL. you must check her out at Piedmont Park for her annual concert.

iscream “nothing but words” is on anthony david’s album! i have not been able to cop her new album…is it worth my $10? ATL be frontin like shyt, the housewives wouldnt be living that “lavish” lifestyle in DC cuz they’d only be able to afford a condo with their money! “30k millionaire” was hilarious though! i wish i could take my salary down there and live like a queen! i cant afford to take a pay cut to move down there!
