A brawl in the stands at the U.S. Open halted a tennis match between Novak Djokovic and Philipp Petzschner in Flushing Meadows, Queens, a borough of NYC.

The drama unfolded yesterday when two Canadian spectators, a woman in her 40s and her father, took exception to a younger man’s cursing.

After some verbal back and forth, the three spectators appeared to squash their beef. But the guy swore at the older gentleman, who then slugged him in the mouth. The two men toppled down two rows of seats before the daughter jumped in and slapped the guy.

Kudos to the real men in the stands who came to the defense of the lady — even though she had no right to put her hands on the guy. Security handcuffed all three and escorted them out of the stadium to a round of applause. Djokovic went on to beat Petzschner in straight sets to advance to the third round of the US Open.

But that’s the whole thing – They don’t want a nice quiet US Open like Wimbledon. Obviously people shouldn’t fight, but US Open is supposed to be loud and lots of noise going on. That’s what makes US Open special, because it’s a completely different atmosphere compared to the other Majors.

Like Jamie said they can blame it on the alcohol because this is the 4th or 5th time a fight has broken out in the past couple of years at a sporting event. Drunk people don’t mix well with others. Getting seriously hurt over some seats or words *smh* some people.

Out of curiousity and not to generalize but I wonder if Americans curse more than Canadians because for them to be that upset over cursing it must be something they are a) not used to or b) just brought up not to curse in public. I heard a Canadian comedian say that Canadians tend to be more polite so maybe it falls in line with that.

Team Canada! @ Pinksghetti, I can see Canadians taking offense because they are truly respectful people and are generally mindful of other people’s feelings. So someone not showing them respect could come off as offensive…But ya, I’d do the same if someone kept swearing at my dad.

Thanks for responding back. When I reread they were Canadians and thought about how they responded I had a feeling they weren’t used to that type of behavior. I wouldn’t mind a move there myself.

Thanks for the reply. Yep, I noticed the Canadians I’ve seen on tv tend to be more reserved than us plus the one comedian that I mentioned made me realize why those two seemed to be so offended by the young man’s behavior.

Wow! I had to watched 6 or 7 times because I wanted to see how the other people reacted to the fight. There’s this Asian guy who comes running in from the right and gets between the woman and the punk and ends up standing right in the middle of all the discussion after the punk was subdued. That would have been me if I had been there and was a man. I’m nosey but helpful.
