Throwback Thursdays: Tevin Campbell
Remember when lil Tevin Campbell released his bubble gum R&B hit “Tomorrow (A Better You Better Me)” and we all thought he would be the next Michael Jackson? Then he dropped his debut album T.E.V.I.N., which ended all speculation that he was destined to be an icon.
The album did spawn the hit single “Tell Me What You Want Me To Do”, which peaked at #1 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart.
Just when we thought Tevin would be a two-hit wonder, he came roaring back with his followed up album, I’m Ready, which yielded the romantic ballads, “Can We Talk” and “I’m Ready”.
It looked like Tevin was well on his way to being an R&B success. But like many others before him, Tevin gave in to the temptations of drugs and alcohol, which ravaged his choir boy looks.
In September 1999, Campbell was arrested for soliciting sex from a male undercover police officer. He pleaded no contest and was ordered to pay a stiff fine and to attend AIDS awareness classes. The court order sparked rumors that he was HIV positive.
Now 34, Campbell is struggling to resurrect his music and acting careers.

He was my first crush growing up, we drove to Disney when I was 8, and I listened to the tape from South Atlanta to Orlando and back non stop! He looks horrid now! seesh… But can we talk will forever be my jam!

He looks about 45, 50 years old. No one cares about what a fried mess a brain on drugs is like. Look at what a FACE on drugs is like that needs to put you off permanently.
I still listen to T.E.V.I.N. and I’m Ready. He had a nice steppers song a few years ago too. Wish I could remember the name of it.
I saw him on a talk show a couple of years back. He confessed that he abused alcohol, drug and sex. And thats exactly what he looks like a alcohol, drug and sex abuser…too many players in the singing game right now for him to turn it around…hope he is living well…
I used to love him…I would play “can we talk” over and over again. Those were the days!

Well I heard back in the day when Prince worked with him on that song…some chit happened…. I dont know how true it is…but this what I heard….

WOW, Sandra, this is truly throwback and i really miss r&b music such as this, i used to sit on the phone with my “boyfriend” all nite n didn’t talk about nothing n just listen to songs such as this and listen to each other breathe lol…….just makes u wanna be back in that innocent

I still like Tevin and dude can still sing… When Monique ask him do he still want a career in music singing R&B he couldn’t answer. He said he preferred doing other things-other types of music that stretched him. He appeared to be over it… and rightfully so. There are only a handful of real singers out today anyway.

Its obvious Father Time has not been good to Tevin but his first album and second album were certified classics…

I remember that S2S interview. At least he’s still got his chops! Don’t know anyone who was a teen or pre-teen in the early 90′s who didn’t love Tevin.
