A Texas Rangers fan died after falling about 20 feet from the stands, head first, while trying to catch a foul ball tossed to him by a player yesterday. The man’s 8-year-old son was left alone in the stands.
The Brownwood (Texas) Bulletin identified the man as Shannon Stone, a lieutenant in that town’s fire department and a fireman for 18 years.
The accident happened in the second inning after Oakland’s Conor Jackson hit a foul ball that bounced back onto the field, according to Yahoo Sports blog.
Stone lost his balance and tumbled over the outfield railing as he tried to catch the ball tossed to him by outfielder Josh Hamilton. Another fan tried to catch Stone but he was too late.
Athletics Reliever Brad Ziegler was in tears after the game when he found out the man died. “They had him on a stretcher. He said, ‘Please check on my son. My son was up there by himself.’ The people who carried him out reassured him. ‘Sir, we’ll get your son, we’ll make sure he’s OK,”‘ Ziegler said.
“A man goes to a ballgame with his son — it’s the ultimate American experience — and he dies trying to catch a ball,” wrote sportswriter David Brown on Yahoo sports blog.

I wonder if Josh Hamilton blames himself…I’m just curious….
My heart just broke when I read this…that poor little boy.

so sad… i hope the MLB start to give oyt free baseball to children.. i know its nothing like getting a game ball, but atleast it would help eliminate pplayers tossing balls and fans trying to catch them… God give them strength
OMG this is so sad. I am usually unaffected by news but this is so horrible. God bless that little boy.
The things we do for our children. This is sad & unfortunate. RIP to the father & my heart goes out to the son.
Hello All. Something good HAS GOT to come out of this. Just like the little boy who witnessed his mother drown herself and her 3 children in her SUV. He managed to escape. A famous NBA star has taken him under his wing and he’s literally a mascot for his team. I saw him on tv with the team with the biggest smile on his face. Life goes on. Peace.
Man this is awful. When we went to a Ranger’s game we got foul balls that rolled deep into the stands. No leaning over the rail for me
GM all!
This is an unfortunate accident and I hope his son who was at the game as well as any other children, wife, family and friends find peace as they mourn and celebrate his life!
That’s horrible. God bless his baby. What a traumatic experience for him.
White people die in the strangest ways… Just a few days ago a white boy died from “planking”.
I saw this on Sports Center last night. Prayers go out to the little boy and the mans family.
damn thats horrible
This is one of the saddest things I’ve heard in a long time…and his son…jut sad. gotta
for that little boy
Prayers go out to this man’s family, especially his son. That little boy must have been so scared.
I feel sorry for the son, not the father. Hope that ball is worth something since he risked (and lost) his life for it.

that’s good! or, as a pp mentioned, free balls for the kiddies because these folks act a fool for these balls sometimes. of course the ball was not worth his life, but he just lost his balance trying to do something nice for his kid. i’ve busted my azz trying to catch dumb shyt at mardi gras.
OMG!!! I was so sadden to hear of this… My
goes out to the family… Espically for that baby boy!
May his soul R.I.P.
He had no idea that he was taking his son to a game; only to meet with death!
Such a tragedy!! My thoughts are with family at this time.
Wow, this is the sadest story. I was shaking my head while reading this. Bless his heart (the father), He died trying to catch a ball for his son whom he obviously would die for.
LORD HAVE MERCY
THIS IS TOO SAD. RIP TO HIM & PEACE TO THE FAMILY
This is the kind of sh(i)t that i don’t like hearing about. Im sitting at my desk all choked up. This kind of stuff touches a nerve. Dude trying to have some bonding time with his son and ends up dead. I hope these players acknowledge this little boy. This whole situation is fcked up.
Reminds me of the girls who fell out the window at that hotel. It happened so fast! too trgic. May the Lord bless his son and the mother come forward to comfort him.
Some of my colleagues were at the game and witnessed the fall, I felt sad when I heard about it on the news. They keep showing the video footage over and over which to me is very insensitive to the family and friends of the victim. I would be pissed if they kept showing my loved one falling to his death repeatedly like that.
That is awful, i truley pray to The LORD above to guide me thru this life, cause you KNOW ain’t no way in this world that man could have ever even THOUGHT something like would happen to him, just trying to catch a ball during the excitment of the game and IN A SECOND, he is no longer here, and his son has to somehow understand this, Dear LORD please bless this man’s soul and his family….
oOMG Sandra I’m literally in tears… That is sooo sad!
*praying for the family*
