CNN is reporting that Chris Kelly, left, of the rap duo Kris Kross has died at age 34 of a drug overdose.
Kelly was found unresponsive at his Atlanta home Wednesday. He was pronounced dead around 5 p.m. at Atlanta Medical Center. Kelly’s death is being investigated as a drug overdose, Fulton County police Cpl. Kay Lester told The Atlanta Journal Constitution.
The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death on Thursday.
Kelly, also known as Mac Daddy, along with Chris “Daddy Mac” Smith, also 34, (pictured above right) formed the successful kiddie rap group Kris Kross in 1992 at age 13. The group rocketed to fame with hit records “Jump” and “Warm It Up”, off their debut album, Totally Krossed Out.
Kris Kross popularized the short-lived fad of wearing their jeans and jerseys turned backwards.
Former So So Def Records label mate Da Brat tweeted: “REST IN PEACE TO MY LIL BRO CHRIS KELLY OF KRIS KROSS. Dam wasn’t we JUST at rehearsal and doin a So So Def20 show?”
Kelly was plagued by death rumors throughout the 1990s. The rumors were revived in 2009 when photos surfaced on the Internet of Smith who had bald spots in his hair.
“My health is good… I just got Alopecia… I don’t have cancer,” Smith said in an exclusive video interview with StraightfromtheA.com.

Wow, I just saw him at the gas station last week buying swishers. He was a very pleasant drunk like Bobbi Brown, which made it hard to judge his lifestyle. He would talk to everyone in line. I hope he didn’t suffer 34 is way too young. RIP.

@Auntie Sandrita Mae – It seems like after the deaths of Amy and Whitney, along with countless others stemming all the way back from the 70’s, our youth (and young adults for that matter) still seem to fall prey to the lure of drugs. Any insight as to why so many continue to drug themselves to an early grave? No judgment, just asking.

I’m not an expert, but I think some people with addictive personalities seek the feeling of being high just as some sex addicts love the feeling of orgasm, and obese people and food. I’m glad my body rejected cocaine, I didn’t like the feeling coming down, I would be sick and slit my wrist depressed for days just off a couple bumps.

Never tried anything except a fake inhale of weed. Some guy I was dating when I was 22 tried to get me to smoke some at a party. I tried playing all coy like I knew what I was doing. Took one one fake hit and told him he had purchased some weak stuff. They laughed so hard at my silly self LOL. Never been interested in any of that mess. After seeing my dad’s alcohol addiction completely ruin our family, drugs in general never appealed to me.

Hold up. I’m sorry I’m not the resident drug addict, maybe it didn’t come out right. I tried cocaine a couple times, didn’t like it. I was prescribed Adderall once to help me concentrate in grad school, it reminded me so much of cocaine I stopped taking it immediately and gave it to a co-worker who snorted it like rocks. I’m good though and I’m so happy this is anonymous

The only place I saw anything being said about a drug overdose is in the COMMENT section for this story on Tee Em Zee. The story itself does not allude to a drug overdose. A poster who commented claimed he was in the ER at the time they brought him in. He was being a bit of a dyck about it so we can take that with a grain of salt. Wonder where Ms Sandra got her drug overdose info.

That’s sad how folk let their kids go into this business and just let em go on the road like they are grown… My child is mine no matter what gift the lord gives him/her. We are just a few month apart in age so when Kris Kross first came out I instantly fell in love and was gonna marry one or both of them. In my 13 yr old mind that was totally possible and ok. He will definitely be missed. When you grow up listening to an artist it feels as though you have lost apart of your own family. He was good during the so so def reunion concert and i was hoping to see more from them I will keep the family in my prayers.

R.I.P. Chris. TLC had me wearing Cross Colors and Kris Kross had me sporting it backwards. Favorite songs by Kris Kross were “Jump,” “Live and Die For Hip Hop,” “I Missed The Bus,” & “Da Bomb.” So glad that they introduced Da Brat to the world on their song, “Da Bomb.”
My son was just starting to talk when they came out. I think he thought the song “warm it up Chris” was about him. Soon he began saying “warm it up Chris, I’m about to.” over and over. These boys made my son start talking.. This is so sad. I always remember them for “Warm it up Chris.” My son would wake me up every morning doing that dance they did and singing that song.
