A member of the infamous Jena 6 is back in jail. Bryant R. Purvis, 19, who now lives in the Dallas area, was arrested and charged with one count of bodily injury during a fight at his high school, his mother said.

Purvis is being held without bond until a bond hearing this morning. The assault charge carries a penalty of one year in jail and a $4,000 fine.

Purvis and 5 other Jena, Louisiana high school students, made national news when they were arrested and charged with attempted murder for attacking a fellow high school student. The boys beat the victim unconscious and kicking him in the head while he lay defenseless on the ground.

“I wish he could just get in a place where he could walk away from the situation,” said Tina Jones, Purvis’ mother. “I understand he gets frustrated. But he needed to walk away from this situation, being that he’s already in a situation. It’s very frustrating and upsetting to have to go through so much.”

Purvis and another Jena 6 member attended the BET Hip Hop Awards in Atlanta last year drawing criticism from Jena 6 supporters.

One of his uncle’s is a Dallas Cowboy, which is why he relocated here to the Dalals area. This happened in Carrollton, a suburb of Dallas.

Allegedly, he beat down a student who he said had been harrassing him and slashed the tires on his car.

I’ve already heard one radio morning show’s jocks saying he could have been targeted for harrassment because of who he is – but, to me, that doesn’t matter. He knew the kind of trouble he was already in – sometimes, you gotta just walk away.

This is also why I didn’t jump on the Jenna 6 bandwagon as soon as I heard about it, because anything involving those hustlers Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson is suspect as hell. Those dudes were straight up thugs from the beginning. Thug???? Why??? I know females who fought every week in high school cutting people, beating them with locks… This is nothing new in schools. Students fight all the time in H.S.schools AND ESPECIALLY ALTERNATIVE schools he’s just getting unfair special treatment becuase of the limelight he was put under from JENA 6. I remember when the Jena situation went down it seemed Sandra and I were the only ones on this site that didn’t support the fellas. Now the comments would lead one to believe no one supported them in their wrong doing. Interesting.

In this case I am not mad at the boy though. His car tires were flattened and he found out who did it and he laid hands on him. He didn’t go jump him with 5 of his buddies. He handled his business and I don’t have a problem with that.

You know, I am so tired of black folks missing the point on this issue. The march was not only about those six boys, it was about the bigger issue at hand which was ensuring that ALL black people (in Jena)get their due process. Do you think that everyone that benefited from the actions of our civil rights activists deserved the freedoms that we enjoy today…NO, but that didn’t stop Dr. King from doing what was necessary. When he marched, he marched for the good and the bad. Follow me now, how many black youths in Jena may have been spared the same UNFAIR treatment that these boys received as a DIRECT result of the march? Come on, let’s get real people. I’m kinda on the fence because the first time they got in trouble I feel as though they were fighting for there rights almost!! yall have to gotta know when you hang a noose under a tree cause you don’t want our kind to sit there your gonna get feedback, these are young boys who probably no nothing else but fighting!! this recent situation is a lil akward cause if you moved away to start fresh & become a better person I’m sure he coud have walked away(depending on the circumstances) this was his chance to prove that yeah I had a rough patch but Im in Dallas now to make a change, but like someone said if thats all you know then you can’t expect anything else!! Maybe he should have used the law instead of taking the risk of being arrested which is happened, hell file a police report, take the fool that flattened your tires to court, there’s other ways of taking matters into your own hands besides putting a whupping on someone. A member of the Jena Six was charged Wednesday with one count of assault causing bodily injury for fighting with a fellow student at his high school in Texas, his mother said.

Bryant R. Purvis, 18, who now lives in the Dallas area, was being held in the Carrollton, Texas, jail without bail pending a bond hearing Thursday morning, a jail official said. The charge is a Class A misdemeanor with a maximum penalty of a $4,000 fine and a year in jail.

Tina Jones, Purvis’ mother, said her son got into an altercation with another student at Hebron High School early Wednesday after being told the student had vandalized his car the night before.

“I wish he could just get in a place where he could walk away from the situation,” Jones said of her son. “I understand he gets frustrated. But he needed to walk away from this situation, being that he’s already in a situation. It’s very frustrating and upsetting to have to go through so much.”

Jones said what happened really wasn’t a fight. Purvis went up to the other student, “ and pushed his head on the table, talking to him “, she said.

“Bryant was very upset because he had a (basketball) game Tuesday night and, when (he went out to his car after) the game, someone made both tires on the passenger side flat,” Jones said.

“And (Wednesday) morning, someone told him who done it. That’s the reason the altercation happened. And a few days before that happened, he was driving my brother’s truck and someone stole the tires and busted the windows out of it,” she said.

Alberta Norman, a parent of another Hebron Hawks basketball player, said she was surprised when her son told her about Purvis’ arrest.

“Bryant was a good kid,” she said. “He was having a great year. Kids, sometimes they make bad decisions. We’re just sad about it. He had come out of his shell and was really enjoying himself.”

Purvis was a starter for the school’s basketball team, and Norman said the team was hoping to end the year in the finals. There are two more games until the end of the season – Friday and next week.

Norman said Purvis’ ties to the Jena Six case have never been an issue.
Purvis is one six black Jena High School students initially charged with attempted murder in connection with a Dec. 4, 2006, assault on white student Justin Barker at the LaSalle Parish school.

Soon after Purvis’ arrest, Jones said she sent him to live with his uncle, Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman Jason Hatcher, so he could stay out of trouble and out of the limelight.

Purvis stayed out of the spotlight for most of the year following the high-profile case but appeared on Black Entertainment Television’s Hip-Hop Awards. Purvis and fellow defendant Carwin Jones helped present the Video of the Year award during the show in October.

The Jena Six case has received attention worldwide and led to what many have called the first major civil rights demonstration of the new millennium, on Sept. 20, when at least 20,000 marched through Jena.

“We are just past that whole thing,” Norman said, referring to Purvis’ connection to the Jena Six. “He has great support from his family and teammates. That was never a cloud or anything. He was trying to move on so he could have a good senior year, graduate and go on with his life.”

Anytime there is a physical altercation at the school, police are called and arrests are made, Norman said.

Jones said the principal has told her Purvis will be suspended for three days and will face 10 days of in-school suspension. After that, he will be back in school normally.

As for the charge he faces in court, she said, she is confident the judicial system in Texas will treat her son fairly. “It’s just another struggle that we have to go through.

“I’m very upset right now with this situation. We are really, really going through a lot already with the Jena Six. I wish this had never happened. But it is what it is, and now we have to deal with it.”

She still contends her son had nothing to do with the attack on Barker, although she knows some will assume he’s guilty because of this recent incident at Hebron High.

Carrollton police officials wouldn’t release information about the arrest Wednesday evening, saying information would have to come from the public information officer Thursday morning.

Messages left Wednesday night for Darrell Hickman, Purvis’ attorney, went unreturned. But during a December interview, the Alexandria attorney said he was hopeful LaSalle District Attorney Reed Walters would drop the charges against Purvis.

“I still feel that Bryant is totally innocent in this case,” Hickman said. “Only one person out of a number of witnesses indicated they saw Bryant involved. I don’t think they have a strong case against him at all.”

Purvis is scheduled to go to trial March 24 before LaSalle District Court Judge J.P. Mauffray Jr. in connection with the Jena High attack, though Hickman has said that is “not a realistic date.”

Purvis faces one count each of aggravated second-degree battery and conspiracy to commit the same. If convicted of both, he faces a maximum sentence of 22.5 years in prison.

Anyway, Mr. Purvis didn’t see who put his tires on flat therefore he couldn’t even win a civil suit let alone file criminal charges. Has anyone’s car been vandalized? You know that it is a crime that you have to pay for out of your own pocket because no one is picking up the tab unless there are witnesses’. Insurance won’t even pay for intentional vandalism.

So if I’m a teenaged boy with even a little bit of swagger and I find out that some guy has put my $200 a piece tires on flat I’m gonna get his a$$ and that doesn’t make me a thug. I get where you are coming from. I have told you guys that I am from the hood. I may have gotten out of there many years ago, but many of my values were shaped there. My original comment was about her calling him a THUG, The fact that he is my family I am going to take it personal..

1st: The march was never about were they (Jena 6) right or wrong..It was about the fact that they were facing sentences that didn’t go with the circumstances…
2cd: If you google his name Brian Purvis you will find that he was not actually involved in the fight in Jena, but that he was there and tried to break it up..You will also find that only 4 of the Jena 6 was actually involved in the fight..
3rd: I was saying that he has been the target at his new school since Hip Hop Awards..His uncle tires have been stolen off his car after Brian was using the car..He has been the target of differnt pranks, and lastly his tires was slashed…I’m not saying that he should hurt anyone I am saying that calling him a thug was wrong becauses hes not…He more of a victim of circumstance..He was raised in a racist community and he is still living with people who are ready to put his A22 away because of Jena 6 issue…

To be honest, I really dont care about this issue. I know its wrong to feel like that. But i have bigger fish to fry like completing grad school, gas prices rising and falling, the oil change my car needs, my man’s birthday and my upcoming birthday. dt2, Im not sure where you mis-read b/c i was simply saying that he was removed from a situation and still displays the same behavior. Being “picked on” b/c people know who he is is not a justification for his actions. Thats how you get dumba$$es like the guy who did the massacre at VT and so forth. I still think he needs counseling or some type of anger management.

Also, in some states fighting in school (or anywhere in public) is punishable by law. Its called “Simple Affray”! Trust me my knowledge is not blog knowledge.

I read all the posts…but someone please explain to me why this damn near grown 19 year old is STILL in high school? Get that boy into night school with his own age group, hook him up with a GED and job!!!!!!!

What more support/role model does he need? He had CNN, MSNBC, and thousands of people taking off work to go to Jena and SUPPORT him. Since then, the entire group has caused a cloud of question because of their behavior SINCE. I was a little taken back from their appearance at the HH Awards and the youtube mess. You can take a person out the hood but you can’t take the hood out the person. Moving is just a change of scenery.

…..and just what does it being Black History Month have to do with it? Will this be a PBS special?

I wrote about this on my blog and I don’t see him as a thug, I do see him as grossly irresponsible, ill tempered and cowardly for going behind the dude’s back and confronting him that way.

I would’ve stopped him, confronted him face to face and if he had hit me, defended myself.

Or he could’ve just LET IT GO. His uncle is a Dallas Cowboy for crying out loud. Get Uncle Warbucks to put new tires on that bitch, and make the school get on top of their game.

I come to this wesite everyday and most of the time I am thoroughly entertained … as well I should be … that’s what this site is about … ENTERTAINMENT! What irks me about the comments is the fact that some of you are the most judgemental bunch of hypocrites in the world. Yeah it’s ok to sit back and judge the mistakes of others that have their lives on public display 24-7. How easy it is to hide our personal discretions behind a screen name. How fortunate you all are to not have the fact that you are having a bad hair day, abuse drugs, sell drugs, steal, abuse alcohol, gets abused physically, mentally or otherwise, have family issues …. whatever! My point is simply: WHO ARE YOU? What makes you judge and jury to something you are only hearing/reading about. Take a look at what you got going on. It’s one thing to comment about fashion and gossip but to say you wish someone would go to jail … I mean do you know what size shoes he wears? How many of you have had to walk a mile in his shoes? Just my opinion …

Dt2, u’re looking for an excuse to justify him going & kickin someone’s ass. Thats absurd!! Over some goddamn tires!! He lives with an uncle who plays professional football for a team that made the playoffs. His uncle cant spot him $200? Like I said, i know exactly what i would’ve done & that would not have been fightin over somethin i can buy again. Whether I was in Miami, Fresno, or Memphis. U can buy some tires, but how do u buy ur freedom? An entire country was behind him!! He had all the opportunity to prove himself & be successful… and what choice did he make? he went & had another fight. At what point will he take responsibility for his actions? At what point will ppl stop making excuses for these kids? Will we always say he was picked on? What will we say when he picks up a gun & kills someone? Hell, I’m short, I’ve been picked all my life?
