Miami-based influencer Ashlee Jenae’s body was returned to her family on April 24, TMZ reports. The 31-year-old influencer died under suspicious circumstances while on vacation with her boyfriend in Zanzibar.
Ashlee, real name Ashly Robinson, was found hanging from a doorknob in a luxury rented villa at the Zuri Zanzibar resort.
Harry Robinson, Ashlee’s father, said her body arrived on Friday without her engagement ring and other personal items. Harry Robinson tells TMZ Ashlee’s belongings are likely being held by Zanzibar officials.
Ashlee’s family suspects that her fiancé, Joe McCann, knows more than he’s saying. Zanzibar officials questioned McCann and seized his passport after hotel staff reported a loud argument between the couple.
They were separated in 2 different villas just hours before she was found unresponsive on April 8, according to CBS News. She was pronounced dead on April 9.
A doctor at a local hospital found an unidentified mark on Ashlee’s neck. The medical report states that her fiancé “found she hung herself on the door.”
Ashlee’s family strongly rejects the official cause of death as suicide by hanging. They described her as a “beacon of light” who showed no signs of depression.
“She’s never done anything that would ever ever lead me to believe that she would do something to harm herself like that. She was happy,” said her mother, Yolanda Denise Endres.
Ashlee’s father, Harry, said McCann called him to say something happened to Ashlee. “Joe went back to the room with security, and that’s how they found her,” Harry said.
The family said they haven’t heard from McCann since Ashlee died. They’re considering flying to Zanzibar to meet with officials and view surveillance video.
“Uncertainty. Mystery. Anger. Sadness. It’s like a part of me has been taken,” Harry said.
