Who Knew Solange Could Sing?

I’ve never been a fan of Solange Knowles‘ singing. It’s been so long since I’ve heard one of her songs. I had totally forgotten what she sounds like. But, thanks to my loyal reader, Krystal, I can say I am a new fan of her music!

Feel good music is making a resurgence and I’m really feeling this song! I could listen to this all day.

“God Given Name” is about Solange’s desperate attempts to crawl out from her sister Beyoncé‘s shadow and make a name for herself.

This is sad…she needs counseling….Parents note: If one child is the star you have to make time and make sure the other children have their own interests. And you have to be honestly interested in what the other children do..This sound sad and they have ALL the money but that doesnt matter.

This is just really a bad track. I’ve heard a few songs by her and the chick has soul and can sing really really good. I don’t know why the hell they didn’t put her out instead of Beyonce. Maybe it has something to do with the looks.

Sandra, glad to see you stopped your hating..lol! I like this new Solange and i’m glad to see that she is finally coming into her own. She is very gifted writer and has more depth than Beyonce who is nothing but a manufactured GIMMICK!

Plush… you funny as hell but you are right. We were suppose to find something for this girl to do. I remember that saturday morning show. How about she stay off of television, radio and become a personal assistant so we don’t hear from her again. ‘Cause when was the last time you saw or heard Bee-ounce-say’s assistant. I don’t know. I couldn’t tell you if the assistant was a she or male gay she.

I really wanted to give Solange and this song or chance, but I think its annoying. It kind of seems like she is trying to hard, IDK. This new direction may not sell that well, why buy this when I can listen to Chrisette Michelle?

I agree with you. If I could give her one piece of advice it would be not to try too hard. She has a good voice if she lets it flow naturally. People are more impressed if your talent sounds effortless and not forced.

lol. i thought sandra had finally stop the spread of the epidemic that is biotcha$$ness. that was until i actually listened to the song and heard the lyrics. did anyoen catch that solange sung a whoel verse about not just being a “sister” and that she isnt beyonce or trying to live off her?! ha! no wonder sandra likes it. i knew it couldnt have been her amazing vocals. though i have listened to a few of solange’s projects or tracks and i am impressed with her style of music, vocally she is like so many others. she can sing but she isnt amazing but thats more than i can say for beyonce.

We dont have to find anything for her to do, she’s been writing music and books and getting that Disney type music writing cartoon type show anthems and shyt like that. So she has a back up.

i DON’T like the song at all. but i do like that is sounds different than the norm. her sound is not bad but in this song i feel that she doesn’t really have a chance to display her talents. poor lil sisters in the industry like ashlee simpson and solange knowles have to battle it out by their ultra successful big media frenzied sisters who do the EXACT same things for a living. that can’t be easy…rather weird and strenous i would think if your mind isn’t right.

PS for all that didnt know Solange wrote Simply Deep and Obsession off Kelly’s first album, she even said it in this song, her lyrical ambitions sometimes dont ring a bell….

I think Solange has grown up . She tried too hard as a kid to be her own name but it didn’t work. Hopefully people will see she is not Bee. Her voice has really matured.

I can dig Solange. She isn’t always the best vocalist but she’s trying to break away from always being in Beyonce’s shadows. I love her song “White Picket Dreams”.
Her style is mixing electronica, r&b, folk….
Ain’t no other black folks I hear on the radio standing out in a good way.

I think I’m the only adult who tried to give her a chance and bought the first album she released.
Solange is grown, been through having a child and married/divorced….way more to talk about nowadays than her big sister.
I say we should just give her a chance.
