T.I. meeting his commitments

Just because you see pics of rap artist T.I. partying with celebrity friends doesn’t mean he’s not out “working”. T.I. addressed an assembly of 500 Coweta County students yesterday to talk about the importance of continuing education.

“There’s nothing in life that you can get more value from, that’s going to benefit you more, than an education,” Harris said.

Providence Baptist Church invited T.I., real name Clifford Harris, to deliver his message of education and hop to the students of Newnan high school.

Part of Harris’ sentence calls for him to spend 1,500 hours talking to at-risk youth, including 1,000 hours due before beginning his 12-month sentence in prison in January.

I think he should of did community service instead, talking to youth when you have been in all kinds of trouble with the law within the last 10 yrs, sends a different message. I don’t car what your preaching.

^^^seriously i’m all for TI talking to the kids, but if he wouldn’t have gotten into trouble in the first place I really don’t think he would’ve thought twice about it9your PR telling you its a good move doesn’t count)..some people don’t need a fire lit under them to speak to these children and we’ve all seen these people do it generously without fanfare or because someone made them do it..whether they are star or just your average joe..its because they know what’s important..and have never lost sight of it..it’s what their heart tells them to do

I live in walking distance of Newnan High… and graduated from there years ago. I have lived in Newnan all my life and was concerned when I learned that T.I. was speaking… and no one in Coweta County did anything to let the residents know. I am not bashing… but I do wonder if T.I’s appearance was limited to NHS students only? How did they go about selecting which kids could attend? I understand that each child had a ticket, well where did they get them from? How did they even know tickets were available? Again, I am NOT BASHING THE APPEARANCE. I think it’s wonderful that he came…these are just some questions that I had. I also know that my questions probably won’t get answered, but it can’t hurt to just put them out there. There are hundreds of kids here running the street corners that could have really benefited from this. I just feel like there were children left feeling as if they didn’t even get the chance to TRY and get a ticket. That’s all I’m saying… I know it is impossible to reach EVERY CHILD in EVERY CITY. But at least make it known so they can try and come…

the question is…how can you talk about staying in school & education if you barely have one…??? i like TI and all but come on….i’m hoping that diploma is at his nana’s house tucked away in the box wrapped in plastic…cause this would be a disgrace.

i guess they figure education is not important since they have money…but in reality your money can be taken away from you but your education can’t. they can take away your cars, clothes, houses but your diploma/degree can never be taken away.

^^^ I would also like to add that it doesn’t always matter to kids today that their favorite celeb didn’t get a diploma (though it should). The bottom line is that kids listen to rappers, athletes, etc and what T.I. has to say will probably have a positive effect on at least a few of the many kids he’s being FORCED to talk to. At least I hope so… ’cause kids these days can quote one of his songs more accurately than they can conjugate a verb (in most cases)

Although I have my own opinion about him coming to Newnan, after reading the other comments I also agree with most of you. We all know he wouldn’t even be doing this had he not gotten in trouble.

@ Anna, I think Cupcakes means cleaning up the highway or something. But what can a felon (who’s still performing his hard core rap songs in concert) tell a child who is jaded by the glitz and glamour?

Plus, what can a drop out tell my child? Did he even try to get a GED, take a college course? Lil Wayne may come off as a mumbling fool, but at least he pretended to go to college.

@ Kogletree, I would let my child listen to T.O before T.I for the simple fact… T.O. WENT TO COLLEGE!!! He attempted to further his education & better himself without doing illegal things. Hell, I’d let Pacman talk to my at risk child before T.I. U know why, because athletes have legit careers & arent glamourizing selling drugs & “being real.”

Personally, while he is imprisoned I think it would be a helluva goodlook if Tip got his GED. It would say alot to not only the kids who look up to him but, his own children as well.

I think recieving that diploma would be a nice milestone for him…most definitely a step in the right direction.

TI did do a lot for the community BEFORE all the legal troubles. As a teacher I feel it is important for these rappers and athletes to tell these kids to stay in school because the odds of making it big that way are slim. Education is the key and a high school drop out like TI can speak from experience that you need an education to have anything if you aren’t blessed with a record deal or NBA contract

his charity is the K.I.N.G. foundation. i think its good that he talking to the kids because regardless of his background he still has more influence on most kids than a harvard grad could have. u could say he is forced to speak to the kids but regardless if he forced or not just seeing the positive change if only he affects one kid is worth it. and im sure he getting just as much out of it as the kids because it could make him think twice about his life in the future when he seeing the influence he can impart on these kids.
