Williams sisters won’t vote for Obama

Venus and Serena Williams like Sen. Barack Obama but they won’t be casting a vote for him come November. During a press conference at Wimbledon last month, Serena Williams told reporters that she’s excited for Obama but her religious beliefs won’t allow her to vote for him.

Because of John 17:14 and other passages in the Bible. In that verse, Jesus says of his followers: “They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.” Jehovah’s Witnesses have interpreted that statement as a call to remain neutral in all political matters. (In some of the sect’s literature, members are described as “representatives of God’s heavenly kingdom”; they are thus obligated to stay out of local political affairs in keeping with the behavior of ambassadors.) Witnesses also refrain from serving in the military, running for public office, and pledging allegiance to the flag. (Source)

Venus, who beat Serena to take the Wimbledon trophy this past weekend, refused to even comment on the issue. It’s a good thing their religious beliefs don’t prohibit them from playing tennis and making obscene amounts of loot. A large chunk of which goes to the Watchtower Society, the legal arm of the Jehovah’s witnesses.

My entire family are Jehovah’s Witnesses & I understand why they dont do certain things. I think its a biased & judgemental religion however I do agree with some of the beliefs… but thats a conversation for another day.

About the Williams sisters, I’ll listen to them & value their opinion when they start looking like sisters & not brothers… j/k!!! (i dont need to be attacked before I go on vacation lol)

As for the Williams sisters, to each his own. I don’t judge people’s religions or their adherence to the rules of their religion. I’m just happy they have a relationship with God regardless of who He is to them. And even if Serena is not voting it’s pretty clear she is supportive of him and that’s cool too.

I was raised as a Jehovah’s Witness and half of my family are still members. Although I don’t agree 100% with all of their tenants I do agree with some. My thing with the Williams sisters–how can you practice SOME of the tenants–not voting– but then not hold true to other tenants–dating before marriage, dressing provocatively, etc. I am not saying that everyone in every religion is perfect and follows the tenants exactly (I don’t even do that) but my point is if you are going to use religion as a reason why you can’t do one thing (vote), how can you justify doing other things against the same religion.

Being raised as a Jehovah’s Witness and being a baptized Jehovah’s Witness is not the same thing and I dont think they were ever baptized just raised with the morals and principles that are outlined in the Bible that does not mean they adhere to all of them… Its a difference trust me!!!

My point is –that seems to be a cop out–if you are going to take a stance on something b/c of your religion–how do you determine which tenants to abide by and which to neglect. now this is something im familiar with now dating before marriage is not a problem you just suppose to date with a view to marriage not date just to date and you cant really say what there motive is when they date. now the dressing you hit it on with that but thats more or less serena more than venus. now the not voting is more of one of the bigger issues far as the religion goes. its more or less u staying neutral in political affairs because if u supporting say george bush and he sends the troops to war and you potentially could be getting some of your brothers and sisters in other countries killed and you in essence blood guilty because you the one that helped elect the official. so if you raised that way its just some things you do like vote and celebrate holidays because you are so accustomed to not doing it and it just kinda becomes part of your life even if you are not a “model” jehovah witness

Very well put snootypooty1, I was raised and babtized as a JW, but I left for a while. I’m trying my best to return, because for me it is indeed the truth. We’re living in some scary times and as much as I love and respect Obama, it’s no time to put hope in any man – the bible plainly tells us at Jerimiah 10:23 “It does not belong to man who is walking to even direct his own step”.

I think this is a case of a person custom applying their religion beliefs. Jehovah Witnesses are an inconsistent group IMO. Based on their beliefs the world is set to end (AGAIN) in 2008, though it was supposed to end in 1914, 1975 and so on. So the fact the William sisters are making money, continue to make money, and probably wont stop making money is one more example IMO of inconsistency, since material possessions are so unnecessary to “THEIR BIGGER PICTURE”…Someone correct me….I thought the decision to vote was based on a personal decision, since there is said to be no clearly written principal that says a Witness can not vote.

Prince released a beautiful CD about 5 years ago which only consist of him singing kingdom melondies, my mom gave me a copy a while back. Larry Graham introduced him (Prince) to the organization – “One In a Million” was written as a dedication to Jehovah.

all i know is my uncle is a jehovah witness. i have 8 cousins out of that marriage…he made his wife have all their children at home without any doctor or hospital care. he read a book on deliveries…and that was it. i thought this was the craziest sh*t i have ever heard of…but, that was his belief.

How do Jehovah’s Witnesses view voting?

There are clear principles set out in the Bible that enable servants of God to take a proper view of this matter. However, there appears to be no principle against the practice of voting itself. For example, there is no reason why a board of directors should not take a vote in order to arrive at decisions affecting their corporation. Congregations of Jehovah’s Witnesses often make decisions about meeting times and the use of congregation funds by voting with a show of hands.

What, though, of voting in political elections? Of course, in some democratic lands, as many as 50 percent of the population do not turn out to vote on election day. As for Jehovah’s Witnesses, they do not interfere with the right of others to vote; neither do they in any way campaign against political elections. They respect and cooperate with the authorities who are duly elected in such elections. (Romans 13:1-7) As to whether they will personally vote for someone running in an election, each one of Jehovah’s Witnesses makes a decision based on his Bible-trained conscience and an understanding of his responsibility to God and to the State. (Matthew 22:21; 1 Peter 3:16) In making this personal decision, the Witnesses consider a number of factors.

First, Jesus Christ said of his followers: “They are no part of the world, just as I am no part of the world.” (John 17:14) Jehovah’s Witnesses take this principle seriously. Being “no part of the world,” they are neutral in the political affairs of the world.—John 18:36.

Second, the apostle Paul referred to himself as an “ambassador” representing Christ to the people of his day. (Ephesians 6:20; 2 Corinthians 5:20) Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that Christ Jesus is now the enthroned King of God’s heavenly Kingdom, and they, like ambassadors, must announce this to the nations. (Matthew 24:14; Revelation 11:15) Ambassadors are expected to be neutral and not to interfere in the internal affairs of the countries to which they are sent. As representatives of God’s heavenly Kingdom, Jehovah’s Witnesses feel a similar obligation not to interfere in the politics of the countries where they reside.

A third factor to consider is that those who have a part in voting a person into office may become responsible for what he does. (Compare 1 Timothy 5:22, The New English Bible.) Christians have to consider carefully whether they want to shoulder that responsibility.

Fourth, Jehovah’s Witnesses greatly value their Christian unity. (Colossians 3:14) When religions get involved in politics, the result is often division among their members. In imitation of Jesus Christ, Jehovah’s Witnesses avoid becoming involved in politics and thus maintain their Christian unity.—Matthew 12:25; John 6:15; 18:36, 37.

Fifth and finally, their keeping out of politics gives Jehovah’s Witnesses freeness of speech to approach people of all political persuasions with the important message of the Kingdom.—Hebrews 10:35.

In view of the Scriptural principles outlined above, in many lands Jehovah’s Witnesses make a personal decision not to vote in political elections, and their freedom to make that decision is supported by the law of the land. What, though, if the law requires citizens to vote? In such a case, each Witness is responsible to make a conscientious, Bible-based decision about how to handle the situation. If someone decides to go to the polling booth, that is his decision. What he does in the polling booth is between him and his Creator.

The November 15, 1950, issue of The Watchtower, on pages 445 and 446, said: “Where Caesar makes it compulsory for citizens to vote . . . [Witnesses] can go to the polls and enter the voting booths. It is here that they are called upon to mark the ballot or write in what they stand for. The voters do what they will with their ballots. So here in the presence of God is where his witnesses must act in harmony with his commandments and in accordance with their faith. It is not our responsibility to instruct them what to do with the ballot.”

What if a Christian woman’s unbelieving husband insists that she present herself to vote? Well, she is subject to her husband, just as Christians are subject to the superior authorities. (Ephesians 5:22; 1 Peter 2:13-17) If she obeys her husband and goes to the polling booth, that is her personal decision. No one should criticize her.—Compare Romans 14:4.

What of a country where voting is not mandated by law but feelings run high against those who do not go to the voting booth—perhaps they are exposed to physical danger? Or what if individuals, while not legally obliged to vote, are severely penalized in some way if they do not go to the polling booth? In these and similar situations, a Christian has to make his own decision. “Each one will carry his own load.”—Galatians 6:5.

There may be people who are stumbled when they observe that during an election in their country, some Witnesses of Jehovah go to the polling booth and others do not. They may say, ‘Jehovah’s Witnesses are not consistent.’ People should recognize, though, that in matters of individual conscience such as this, each Christian has to make his own decision before Jehovah God.—Romans 14:12.

Whatever personal decisions Jehovah’s Witnesses make in the face of different situations, they take care to preserve their Christian neutrality and freeness of speech. In all things, they rely on Jehovah God to strengthen them, give them wisdom, and help them avoid compromising their faith in any way. Thus they show confidence in the words of the psalmist: “You are my crag and my stronghold; and for the sake of your name you will lead me and conduct me.”—Psalm 31:3.

I love how people pick and choose when and how they will be faithful to God. How can you quote a bible verse when you play an organized sport, get out on hte court with your cakes hanging out, and have premarital sex, but on this you want to pull the God card?? Really? I don’t really agree with Jehovah’s Witnesses but to each thier own, I just get tired of people being faithful on a part time basis….either do it or don’t, quit picking and choosing. It’s like someone having pre-marital sex, getting pregnant and then saying God says abortion is a sin, he also says pre marital sex is a sin.

This is a very touchy election…it seems like every Black person is damn near expected to be an Obama supporter, mainly because he is a Black man. If you are around a group of Black people talking about you don’t support Obama you WILL damn near be stoned lol…

Alot of people need to realize not everyone (including some Black people) are going to vote for Obama…personally, I feel not voting for him is a truly IGNORANT move but to each their own.

It must be a new day and age with Jehovah Witnesses because as a teenager I had a classmate that was one and she could not wear makeup, short skirts etc. So if they are Jehovah Witness why do they wear makeup, weaves, have boyfriends and most of all not wear long skirts and dresses on the tennis court? Witnesses have said that Jesus was coming back many times. Even went as far as to naming the years that God would be walk the earth again.

A former Witness, Peter Mosier once had a web site that did nothing but present short quotes from literature published by the Witnesses. The site, http://quotes.watchtower.ca*, was grouped by subjects such as Dates, Present Truths, Oscillating Truths, and Abandoned Truths.

As a result of failed prophecies, Mosier abandoned the Jehovah’s Witnesses several years ago.

Thomas Heinze, in his book, Answers to my Jehovah’s Witness Friends, details many of the specific prophecies that failed to occur. Starting in the late 1800s, Witness leaders predicted the beginning of the Millennium in 1872 with the “breaking into pieces of the kingdoms of this world and the establishment of the Kingdom of God under the whole heavens.” When this failed to occur, they moved the date to 1975 which also passed without fulfillment.

Christ’s second coming was also predicted to occur in 1874. When He did not appear, they claimed that He did come incognito. Leader Charles T. Russell declared, “Surely there is not the slightest room for doubt in the mind of a truly consecrated child of God that the Lord Jesus is present and has been since 1874.”

One of the most bizarre events was the construction of a house in San Diego, California, in 1929, to be occupied by “faithful men of old [who] will soon be resurrected by the Lord, be back on earth, and take charge of the visible affairs of earth.”

Heinze points out: “When it became obvious that the prediction would not be fulfilled, the house became an embarrassing monument to a false prophecy. It was sold in 1948!”

One of the MAIN points that people miss about Witnesses (I was raised and baptized as a Witness) is that while it may seem to be a list of “clearcut rules” – there isn’t. Jehovah’s Witnesses live by the Bible principles taught by God’s son, Jesus Christ. So to all those that say “I knew a Witness and they did this/that” please take into consideration the fact that personal choice still exists. Many Witnesses don’t wear make-up, don’t use hospitals, don’t watch TV etc., that is their personal choice. I agree that most people in general, of all religions follow the principles they favor, but in my life’s experience – Witnesses are the most religiously faithful people you’ll ever meet.

I know of witnesses who pick and choose what tenants they would adhere to. (I guess some baptists,etc. do the same), but they won’t sing happy birthday, but be at the party and drink you under the table. I can buy my cousins a Christmas gift, birthday gift, but give it to them the day before or after. I don’t get it, but do you.

correction! there IS a list of things we definitley would NOT do, but it’s found in the BIBLE. (Forgot abt 2nd Timothy for a sec) but like Snooty said there are a LOT of untruths about Jehovah’s Witnesses. Besides Life itself, knowledge is the greatest gift a man/woman can give you. as I’m sure all can see from the post – We Witness feel very pasionately about our faith and will take EVERY opportunity given to preach! – its out of love though.

@thatcarmen there is no such thing as being exempt from doing field service no matter what type of money you contributing and the money goes towards printing of the publications and so forth not to a legal department. if prince does field service and he has more money than the williams sisters combined they cant be exempt. and also there is no 10% tithing like most church they can donate whatever they like. and also like i said before i dont think either of the williams sisters are baptised witnesses i think its more or less they upbringing that has them taking the stance its more or less how they was raised so if you spent all your life doing something u not gonna just turn around and vote just because the candidate is black now. and the political thing for witnesses is on a global scale its countries where its illegal to preach and be a jehovahs witnesses but witnesses there go to the persecution despite what the leaders try to dictate because they believe there faith will lead them and in many lands after years of persecution they lift the bans because they see the unwaivering faith. yeah u might work and live in this land but thats almost like u going to work everyday u may hate the place u work at but u still work because u know bills gotta be paid. most of us was born in this country so we do what we have to do to make a living. jesus said pay ceasars things to ceasar but gods things to god basically meaning u do what u have to according to whoever is leading at the time suggest such as paying taxes but u dont look towards that figure to dictate your life and how u live

I bet your Jehovah Witness associate is just that to the Witnesses because we heed the command in the Bible that’s found at Matthew 28:19,20 That is why we go out and preach it has nothing to do with how much money you have that command did not say the more money you have then you are exempt from preach the good news about Jehovah’s Kingdom we all are required to do so. So your associate or whomever is not being truthful you can’t donate your way out of field service sorry…. Prince even goes door to door and he has money…

You pick the best option for the life you are trying to live… its not always something guaranteed but, like I said, there are FACTUAL events that have occured (good and bad) that follow who we elect in office… Things are not great for the minority races in this country as it is….hell, illegal immigrants are starting to collect social security and SSI for God’s sake but, think of it this way….if we NEVER voted…just like if we NEVER fought for the political government that we have and the laws that go with it, we would still be in chains… we would still be unable to vote at all. Maybe I just enjoyed my college history classes a little too much or my very rare Black Government class that was offered but, think of it this way… yes, it changes … Clinton’s years in office drove an economy that allowed us to purchase more homes, equal out more jobs, ect. … Bush has basically erased most of that momentum…. When the fires occur yearly in California, Bush calls a national crisis and the homes are re-built almost overnight. Katrina and Louisiana….think about it. Think if more of us would have voted to ensure Al Gore into office. Bush has allowed the flood gates to open in pollution and tearing up our wild-life reserves for big industry gain. …something that Gore now is fighting as a little man. We are paying for a War based on whatever this president feels like claiming to fight it for when he wakes up in the morning and our children are hungry, starving for education. There was a better pick other than him and we chose to sit and wait… and now look, …the middle class is dying. They would love for us all to hull up in just a few cities, give us just enough to say “thank ya masta” and not bother with voting (as we are beginning to do). Im just saying that rather we like it or not, this country is built on politics and laws that we vote upon…there is more on a ballot that the presidential election. I am Christian….but, I choose not to hide behind any “religion” of Christianity that is backed by a legal stronghold….paying for much more than the biblical education of its followers. (and i am well educated in the facts i speak on religion so, i am not assuming one bit) I do not beleive in any “religion” of Christianity that has popped up in recent times (earth time 19th Century)as a movement in 1931 that all of a sudden took biblical versus and made them into “religious” laws taken out of the real languages context.

Look, again, its all just my opinion and, I’ll admit …and ignorance to the way people oppose things that they use as a foundation of living (this whole country is one big political foundation)…and how they choose to do one thing that their “religion” has created as a holy law or guide and then turn a blind eye to other things but, always want to cite their religion as an excuse. Growing up, I was exposed to more churches and temples than people can think up and I found one common ground amongst them all, …. the foundation was the same so, I decided to follow the foundation and let the buildings that the people were trying to build over it crumble as they have for centuries.

Ultimately, my feeling is that if you dont vote or dont care to vote….fine… try living your life for ONE day without utilizing anything in this country that has been voted upon or has been laid out by politics…. The versus in the bible (in the original Hebrew text…not the “i just think it should mean this version” have nothing to do with what we call politics today)…. Actually, the closest existance to the political realm of what the Hebrew text called political would be in tribal communities with Kings and Queens and tribal wars that utilize their servant community as slaves.

Again, be consistant in what you beleive. Whatever brings you closer to God then fine, …but, He is a bad excuse to use just because you choose not to do something.

I dont think Obama is the next coming for Black people at all….Im just saying he is much better choice than McCain who (well, ive expressed my views on him in so many other posts)…. I enjoy my right to treat my female body as I see fit and so on…. I wouldnt give a flip if Obama was green, … He will help balance this country out more then McCain will. I know that I am in a great situation right now because I put Christ first…and I am thankful that I am allowed by HIM an opinion on which human beings are in office to create laws and enforce them while I am here on this earth.

Snooty Pooty, how would you know? I thought gambling was against the beliefs of Jehovah’s Witnesses…..I think it’s unfortunate that we can’t have a conversation without being harsh, or condescending comments made everytime someone makes a statement that not in unison with what another is saying.

Imagine if not one black person voted in this country. (oh that use to happen…remember how life was then for our people) Or if not one Christian voted. Or if not one woman voted….(we forget that we once could not as women…think the wages amongst men and women are bad now??? it was worse then… our job options were slim and our voice as respected human beings barely existed) Who would be the leading foundation and what rights we would have (or lack there of)

Just my final thought. But, this was all a very good conversation family.

This was a very interesting conversation. I am not mad or upset with anyone. This is entertainment. Being one of Jehovah’s witnesses is a way of life for me. I don’t turn it on or off. There are hypocrites in every religion. We all have God given free will and we all choose to exercise it the way we want too.

If I offended anyone; I truly am sorry. I feel very strong in the facts that are not hidden to anyone about certain “religions” … If being a Jehovah Witness brings you spiritual healing then, great. I think everyone should read the facts about how their scriptures for their particular “religions” became to be …who wrote them and how the publications were/are funded …including the ***dates*** of original publication and how different versions were changed based on partnerships of a few men disagreeing about simple wording.

My great-grandmother once told me; before you read anything that man puts in your hands claiming to be the words of God…pray to God that what you read is translated through HIM and not just from the mouth of another human being.

I think talking of religion in itself is a touchy subject for some people and they don’t know how to go about expressing their feelings without getting heated. I was raised and baptized as a Jehovah Witness and I will tell you that as a religion it has a bad rap because people don’t understand nor take the time to understand the religion. All religions have their own quarks about them so to each their own and i applaud Serena for making a stand for her religious beliefs knowing that it could possibly cause some backlash

I see we have alot of JW’s in the room. I am not one, but there is nothing wrong with praising your belief, faith or spirituality. My sister is a JW and I have to respect that I can’t send her a card for her birthday or buy a gift for my niece and nephew for Christmans. We were JW’s when we were little. Our mother was a non batized JW for a few years before she died. We went to The Kingdom Hall and instead of having Ebony or Jet (not sure if we would have had Ebony or Jet. Mom was white) on our coffee table we had Watch Towers. I have noticed that the JW’s are so compassinate about being a JW and I believe it is because they always have to defend their belief and spreading the word. Nothing wrong with that. In reading the comments and those who asked questions this was a great post. In Jr High School when you take a foreign lanugauge class you are introduced to Spanish, French, Italian and German. I was watching the news with the kids last week and a college wants to have a religion class that introduces you to different religions. It is not to recruit you but to build a understanding. This is a great idea, especially in America where we have so many different cultures amoung us. It of course should not be a requirment but an option for those willing to learn about the differences in backgrounds with the ppl they work with each day and the ppl who live in our communities. Great discussion we had tody. It is ok to think outside the box and agree we are different but we don’t have to beat each other up for our differences.
