Do you know what’s in that bottle of Dasani water you’re drinking? Coca Cola, the manufacturers of Dasani bottled water says you do. In fact, just recently, a company spokesperson was able to convince a consumer advocate’s group that it wasn’t necessary to label their bottles of Dasani as tap water because you – the consumer – already know that.
Well, do you? Apparently, full disclosure is only necessary if it doesn’t hurt the bottom line of a giant corporation like Coca Cola. That explains why the label of Dasani water says everything but “tap water” on it.
In Atlanta magazine’s June issue, there’s an excellent article on Dasani water and Coca Cola’s attempts to cover up the fact that they are bottling Atlanta municipal city water and selling it to us as “fresh” and “pure” water.
“The FDA’s definition of purified water does not require [that we label it with] the source,” argues Coca Cola. “We believe consumers know what they’re buying.”
My grandmother (RIP) used to say, “if you ask me no questions, I’ll tell you no lies.” In Coca Cola’s case, if you visit Dasani.com or call the company headquarters, they will tell you you’re drinking city water — they just won’t say so on the bottle.
Last year, Think Outside the Bottle, a consumer advocate group based in Boston, pressured Pepsi to put the words “Public Water Source” on it’s bottles of Aquafina. TOB then turned its sights on Coca Cola which so far has refused to put similar wording on its bottles of Dasani. Instead, the bottling giant placed the words “salt” and “reverse osmosis” on its bottles to explain the filtering process it uses to filter city water. The “salt” part is added at the end of the process to give the tap water its “fresh” taste.
Coca Cola argues that the wording it uses should suffice because the consumer is not confused as to Dasani’s source. To test that theory, Atlanta magazine interviewed people spotted drinking Dasani water at downtown’s Peachtree Center and SunTrust Plaza to see if they knew what the source of Dasani water was. Over two days, not one person who was asked knew that Dasani was tap water.
In case you’re wondering why all the fuss about city water vs. bottled water: city water contains fluoride, a necessary and vital mineral for the health of our teeth. If all you drink is bottled water, don’t expect to have any teeth left in your head by the time you’re my age.
NY’s tap water is Yummy
So is NJ’s … I miss Jersey’s tap Wata … GA and VA water is the WORSE … and I don’t buy Dasani OR Aquafina … for that matter … Tap water with a twist of lemon juice is fine with me.
I drink Nestle water… It seems fine to me
As long as it’s clean………
That Dasani is some nasty sh*t! You can taste the dirty!
…but ain’t nothing like some good ‘ole cold bathroom sink water at 2:30 am! :)~
And Coca-Cola ain’t the only one doing it….all of them…
Dasani is the BEST tasting water! I am surprised that its tap water though…
Yeah, I have to agree with you Caron02, Dasani is the best tasting. Even that ridiculously priced Evian is gross! But damn, I never took the time to actually read the bottle. Any one who paid attention in science class knows the effects of reverse-osmosis, i.e, the purification of tap water! That totally excludes me… I hated science class!!! LOL!!!
BTW: Great info Sandra!
Dasini is the nastiest bottled water. I prefer Arrowhead it is good to the last drop.
My husband has banned me from buying Dasani for the house. He’s always said it was just tap water.
Poland Spring water is the BESTEST!!!
miamore73- Is your husband psychic?
I love Ozarka!!!!!!!!!
Learn something new everyday.Didn’t even know Dasani was tap water and all this time my family brings Dasani in the house. My buds must be funny, because water is water, buuuuuuuut, coming from the bottle should be different, but I see that it is not, damn.I’m good always boiled my water, if that does any good before drinking it.Damn.

They do it here in Ohio also. Trying to sell the candy bars that they stole from Family Dollar right in front of Family Dollar. lol.
That’s some straight up bullchit. How are the consumers supposed to know if you dont tell them. I’ve had Dasani water before and it tasted nasty to me, so I don’t drink it. I had no idea until I read this post, that it is filtered tap water.
Thats messed up…thats why I stick to my sink water and run it through Brita and call it a day
Drink FIJI water people! It’s the best. I also like the filtered water from my fridge.
I agree about that bathroom sink water lol. I also like Fiji and my fridge water. Deer park is pretty good also
Yep – I knew it. But Detroit tap water is the ish – so I really only drink bottled water at work, or the gym.
i used to drink dasani until i heard about his awhile ago…now, i just drink the filter water from my fridge…and it’s d*mn good!
Be careful not to let your bottle waters get hot…stay in your hot ass car….out in any heat at all for that matter… The toxins in the plastic of the bottle will begin to enter the water and its not good for you. Yay for Brita filters on the sink!
IT says on the bottle “filtered water”. It ain’t no different than running the tap through pur or brita. the water you get in restaurant is straight tap sometimes I think they just dip the glass in the toilet and serve it to you
I love the taste of Dasani. That’s the only bottled water that I can stand to drink at room temperature. It’s good for you just like the water you drink through the filters you buy from the store or from your fridge. If you’re drinking only spring water, make sure you’re doing some serious flouride treatments.
Chicago tap is that thang! i miss home!
but about Dasani…i been knew this. this story about Dasani AND Aquafina broke what…about two years ago? so yeah of course at first i stopped drinking, then i was like oh well…as long as they filter it i’m cool. we use the britta water filter at home and it taste good and works fine. filter is all i care about. and i agree…we need the fluride so cool.

LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOO @ that!! i had Dasani water one time when it first came out and i said never again..it tasted like something was in it… straight up nasty. so now i only drink ice cold tap water or Fiji Water.
I knew that Dasani was tap water…..LOL
I think all this water out here comes from the tap….they ain’t doin nothing but selling tap water in pretty bottles, and charging $25 for it…..
My aunt works for the Hyatt Regency, and she brought home this water in a “sharp” azz bottle….I said “What is this, a new drink(Liquor)?” The shyt tasted like some regular azz water….they doin nothin but finding new ways to take folks’ $$
Fuji is the best but it’s to expensive if your trying to get your recommended amount of water per day. I love my Food 4 Less (Kroger) 2 1/2 gallons of drinking water (blue label).
Dasani has always been the WORST! The taste just ain’t right. Now maybe Cola is get that tap straight from the toilet & putting it in a bottle. I don’t really thinking they’re purifying it.
What a dumb article. I especially like ur closing argument “don’t expect to have any teeth left in ur head by the time you’re my age” You obviously don’t know the difference between sodium fluoride and calcium fluoride. One is a poison the other occurs naturally, i’ll let your dumbass figure out which is which.
