This is an excellent comment because it is short but sweet, and it speaks to why black people should not vote for a candidate based on his race or emotions.

Some of you say you are voting for change. But if Barack Obama is elected, Congress still wields the power to VETO any change he attempts to make – and trust that they will!
I’m not saying vote for McCain. I’m just saying that the president does not run this country. If McCain wins he can’t make changes either without the full approval of the House and Senate. That’s why you should be worrying about your local elected officials who become representatives of both the House and Senate.
Don’t forget it was The House of Representatives that stole the election from Al Gore and gave it to Bush in 2000.

I do agree however, why do we think he can’t bring forth change. So many other presidents have done it. I’m not sure about everyone else but ‘m voting for Obama not his color. Besides I feel like McCain picked a woman as his running mate because he really doesn’t want to be president. He knows that the US is not going to go for a woman President nor Vice President. Time will tell we shall see in November.

No I don’t pay attention to gas prices because I don’t own a car and my home is all electric. I made sure I work close to home so that I would not have to depend on gas, I saw the crash coming and took steps to make sure that I had public transportation always on hand. Taxes have always been high no news there and nothing will change. No matter who you vote for they cannot pull our troups out because we should not have been there in the first place. There is no war in my neighborhood. So see this is why I’ve stayed away from these post.

If it’s because you believe in his policies, vote for him. If it’s because he’s black, vote for him. If it’s because you believe that he can bring CHANGE, vote for him. Whatever reason you need to vote for him, do it. Your vote is yours and don’t let anyone let you feel as if it’s not. For once, I agree with you Sandra! I already said this in a post yesturday, but we as Blacks are expecting way too much from Obama. I do think some changes will occur, but will Blacks instantaneosly rise from our current second-class citizenship in America? NO. Obama is only one man, who will likely have about half of the country against him, not to mention the House and Congress.
Folks are gonna feel bamboozled once Barack settles in and everything isn’t suddenly hunky dory…and what I’m most afraid of is that it will only raise the apathy level that exists in the Black community when it comes to registering to vote, and actually VOTING in elections. When Obama gets in and doesn’t reach the ridiculously high standards that we are setting for him, folks will likely feel more marginalized than ever.

Sure he can’t pass any laws himself, but neither can the senate because the President can veto anything they try to put through. See, the Democrats said that when they take control that they would end the war…How that working out for you?
And someone already said it- the President put Supreme Court judges into office. If they fill it up with conservatives than they can very well overthrow Roe vs. Wade and other liberties as we know today.
Not to mention how much influence the president’s own policies have over other countries. There is no way you can refute the power of the United States President.

Like, people were so hyped when the whole “Vote or Die” campaign was goin on in that previous election, then so disappointed when the Dems lost anyway…I know a bunch of people who won’t even vote now because they feel the powers that be will fix the election anyway…and that’s just sad. I’m afraid that if Obama wins and things don’t turn out the way we’re hoping, then people will just give up altogether. We need not do that to ourselves, we just need to BE REALISTIC.

OMG, This is truly a moment in history period. A black man and a 72 years old man.
I don’t get involved in the political convos too often because it brings up strong emotions for people who want you to believe and feel the way you do. You can talk about someone’s mama but if you talk about their politcal choice—pressure and sugar go up a notch. Howsomucheverishallsaythis – I think Monica Lewinsky should be voted for president. We were in a better place when she was on her kne, I mean job. Clinton had his strikes but for the most part, we are in a place of higher ground now because of what he did then. Since the bushes have been growing on the white house lawn, we’ve seen a steady decline. The way I see it, we are at the bottom and we can only look up. IF Barack being president gives that one brother behind him an ounce of hope to stay in school and strive to be better HAVE MERCY. I just don’t think McCain will make my life better.

I usually disagree with you on some points Sandra, but I have been telling people it is your local officials that you need to worrry about.

don’t be foolish. every president’s policies have an impact on the lives of every person living in this country. the current crisis in gas prices, inflation and the crisis in schooling are all perfect examples. it doesn’t take an economist to understand that if the majority of the the money of the federal discretionary budget is going towards funding a war, there are going to be fewer resources for domestic programs.
i’m brown, not a democrat and i will be voting for obama this year because i would like to support change in this country and to vote for someone who isn’t my grandmother’s age.

We all don’t live in metropolitian areas where public transportation is a great convenience or readily available. Isn’t all electricity powered by fuels. The whole green movement isn’t just about the cars we drive. It’s about our lifestyle as a whole and uless we change the way we live today, the things that we take forgranted today will be forever gone and I promise that day is coming sooner rather than later.
More disease, less farming (therefore food), letting our kids and grandkids go outside and play in the yard will be a memory from the past. People better start paying attention, the air that we’re breathing is becoming increasingly worse and the lack of ozone layer is making the sun ray’s more and more harmful to our health. That is why Obama’s administration is making a big push about saving our environment.
I don’t think he will fix all of America’s problems because he’s only human. But can we at least have more jobs and work on these gas prices… that wouldn’t definitly help.
Although i think i’m falling in love with Barack, it is so so much deeper than what color he is.

Congress will only veto the president mostly if they are the majority of the opposite party. If the president’s party is the majority…they’ll get most of what they want.
Of course the president doesn’t run the country. There’s a such thing as checks and balances. The three branches of government (legislative, executive (president), & judicial) are in place to ensure that the other branches don’t get to out of line. I know it doesn’t always work that way but the general idea does for the most part.
Also, lets not forget the president can also veto congress, not just the other way around.
He’s right, but let’s be positive, you gotta start from somewhere.
I just wish it was all this being said when Bush ran for his 2nd term. Sandra, I wish you had something positive to say about Barack. As for the email, it was a personal opinion and yes…maybe you thought it was wonderful…but I assure you of this…there is’t a person in the US (and several other countries) who doesn’t SEE, FEEL AND REGRET the change that Bush has made to this country. So that is bs that the president doesn’t have the power to change things. Lastly, please tell me when is the last time the HOR put their Veto power use?

The democrats are in majority control of the House & Senate so whatever initiatives Obama puts forth they will have no probblem passing thru. I’m somewhat ashamed to say that in my 37 years (well in 2 more weeks)this is the first time I’ve ever watched the DNC, and I was so proud, so inspired. This may, well will, sound naieve, but can a president do all the things he said he was. Cutting taxes, giving tax breaks to companies building in the US, not shipping jobs overseas, healthcare etc… or is that something they say just to get a vote. And if it is possible, WHY THE HELL HASNT IT BEEN THAT WAY??

You are correct Obama can not do it on his own but you’re sounding very uninformed You do know that the Democrats control congress and have since the mid term elections of 2006 and most likely will take a more control after the next election, which will help Obama push his agenda. so things like taxes and programs to help make new jobs the President has a heck of a lot of power over. In the early 80’s I had family members college dreams derailed because president Regan made it so that children of deceased parents could no longer collect Social Security until 21 as long as they are in college. So yes a President has a ton of power because the President sets policy. Also the House of Representatives did not steal the election from Al Gore that was the Supreme Court which is the Judicial branch of government the President is the Executive and Congress is the Legislative Branch and they all have Checks and balances.but that’s another story.
Also Sandra why are you so negative about Obama you have nothing to say that is good about him do you not think that he will take us down a better road then bush choose or McCain will continue down.

Oh my goodness Sandra you hit the head on the nail just then!!! We really need to be out here rally about who will be in the Senate and in the House!!!! First of all if he is elected into the office he has some much crap to clean up first until we will not see any changes it is going to take him two terms before we can start to see some major changes the same way when Bill Clinton was in office he had to go and clean up behind the Regan years as well as Bush Sr.

My regular readers know I am from England. I’ve said this numerous times. That doesn’t mean I can’t be a political observer from the sidelines. I can’t vote but if I could I wouldn’t vote for either of these guys. All politicians are crooked – even the suave smooth talking ones.
Sandra, I am very impressed by your RN credentials, and have repeatedly praised your public service with your very well written Medical Moments. Black people need that type of information way more than celebrity gossip, but I know you have to make a living.
I have also noted that your non-American background is reasonably uninformed. TeeCee has written the facts. The Supreme Court stole the election, not the House, not the Senate. The President selects the Supreme Court. They are instated for LIFE. If you think that won’t have any bearing on you personally, you are both uninformed and wrong.
I reject just about any statement that claims change is impossible, or ‘all’ of just about any group is good or bad. I also cut people off in arguments, who start of “You always”, because that ends any possibility of discourse.
Dennis Kucinich, for eaxmple, is a white man who has extraordinary character and is a politician. There are others. I don’t believe Barack Obama is the messiah. But his life’s work has demonstrated that his vision is greater than any other candidate’s. Vote for him, if you can. I understand you can’t, Sandra, but for all of you others, if you haven’t taken the time to register, you won’t be able to participate either. And that would be a shame.

I am For OBAMA 100%. Like he said This election is not about him, it is about US. Take those words in to consideration that it is what is wrong with us now. Think NEGATIVE you will receive NEGATIVE RESULTS. Think POSITIVE and you will receive POSTIVE REULTS. I believe that that is being realistic as well.

true about congress being able to VETO anything. and since there are lots of whites in congress or simply those that don’t agree with obama, it can and will happen. i’ve thought about that lots! i just hope the american’s see that obama is NOT perfect and is trying and if things get veto then it’s not really his entire fault. i still want obama and michelle to win! it’s a good look in many ways, not just bcz of them being black. come on now…!
