The calls are flooding into designer Luke Song’s hat shop from hat lovers seeking the crown that our queen Aretha Franklin wore when she sang “My Country ‘tis of Thee” at POTUS Barack Obama’s inauguration.
The 36-year-old designer has been besieged by calls from all over the world from hat aficionados who know a great crown when they see one! “They want the same hat, but they understand, it’s for the ‘Queen’ only,” said Song. “Ninety-nine percent said ‘that’s fine. I’ll get the next best thing.'”
Song said Re Re has been a valued client of his for over 20 years and she practically designs her own hats.
The design for Franklin’s $500 grey felt hat with gigantic bow studded with rhinestones actually came from two different hats.
“It was Ms. Franklin’s idea,” he said. “She walked through the shop and said ‘I want that bow (put) on that hat.'”
“We even have a lot of men calling to get it for their wives, mothers and grandmothers,” he said.
Hats are kind of a big deal over in London where I hail from. And the love for fancy, bodacious hats extends to Detroit where Aretha lives.
Some couldn’t wait to order their hats as That B*tch points out on her blog!
