When I read the headline on CNN.com that a man was executed by firing squad toay, I naturally assumed that the execution took place in a foreign country. I was wrong.
According to CNN, the Utah Dept. of Corrections reports that convicted killer Ronnie Lee Gardner was executed by firing squad early this morning. Firing squad? I’m all for capital punishment for ruthless murderers, but how barbaric is that? They don’t play in Utah! I’m guessing the crime rate is real low there.
Gardner is the third man killed by firing squad in Utah since capital punishment was reinstated there in 1976.
Gardner was convicted and sentenced to death for gunning down an attorney during a botched escape attempt from a courthouse in 1985. Someone slipped Gardner the gun prior to his court appearance where he was on trial for murdering a man in 1984.
Utah Gov. Gary Herbert rejected Gardner’s appeals for a commutation of his sentence to life. And the Supreme court sealed his fate by rejecting a stay of execution on Thursday.
Here are the gruesome details of the execution:
A hood was placed over Gardner’s head and a paper target pinned to his chest. He was heavily restrained as a five-person firing squad took aim at the target and shot him, witnesses said.
Journalists who witnessed the shooting said it happend quickly. One reporter said she noticed that Gardner moved after he was shot.
“It was over pretty quickly,” said Cheryl Worsley, a local radio reporter. “It was cleaner than I expected. It was fast. But he moved. He moved a little bit, and to some degree that bothers me.”
I bet rapper Lil Boosie is glad he didn’t commit his crimes in Utah. Yesterday, a Louisiana Grand Jury indicted Lil Boosie, real name Torrence Hatch, on a murder charge in connection with the Oct. 21 shooting death of Terry Boyd.
He chose the firing squad as his “execution”. The one thing about a firing squad is that some have “blanks” and none of the volunteers know whoes bullet killed him.

the firing squad option is not used for anyone convicted after 2004. they normally do not use that but since he was convicted in 1984, that was still an option.
in my opinion, the death penalty is barbaric itself so whether its firing squad, hanging, lethal injection or electric chair, its all the same. barbaric.

@Flo, police officers make up the firing squad. Idaho and Oklahoma are the only states where death by firing squad are still legal. He chose his punishment back when it was still legal in Utah.

I had never heard of this punishment until now. I learn something new everyday. The nerve of Boosie especially with all the foolery he was talking before he got locked up, selling everybody out. He is guilty until proven innocent though.

Firing squad is old fashioned.. but they were pulling for this, because of the attorney killed. The actual victim’s family of his original case was appealing death by fire squad. BUT they knew what they wanted to do from when their own was hurt. I have no comment other than the fact that the law enforcement people stick together. I read about this on CNN the other day.

I went to the gun range here and took a first time gun users class for women and then purchased a real cute black and pink 22 pistol. I feel much safer knowing if someone comes in my ass, or tries to car jack me, im shooting the sh.it out of them. Point. Blank. Period. @ Free, in the case of murder, IMO you need to be locked up until your trial. I don’t want those charged with murder walking the streets. Here in GA, you can make bail w/ a murder charge. There was a case recently where a guy was out on bail for murder and raped a teen girl. There was another case where a man killed his wife and a Mexican dayworker and fled the country while out on bail.

As barbaric as it sounds, I beleive in “eye for an eye”.
If you brutally and maliciously murder someone you should suffer the same fate. Stabbings, strangling, drowning, shootings, etc…..
If we adapt more of these barbaric customs, I truly beleive crime would be down.
Right now, these criminals are in jail “living it up” on our money that can be used to improve our economy, schools, environment, and so forth. They are not afraid to do time!!! Make the punishments more severe, that’s my vote.

Everyone on death roll does not get executed the day after sentencing. I live in Ohio and it takes 20+ yrs to execute a inmate. The mans request for a firing sqaud has been on the news and reported everywhere, radio, blogs, non urban websites.

It has been proven that the death penalty does not deter crime.
I believe that some deserve the death penalty. but at the same time the executioners that “choose” to carry out the execution are no better and are murderers too. Who would want a job like that? They justify it as enforcing the law but “enforcing the law” does not mean it is right!
Maybe they should let the family members decide and let them carry it out.

This man was allowed to choose the way he was to be executed. There were 5 officers, four with live rounds, one with blanks…..they all aimed for his heart, from behind a wall with slots for the guns.
He chose this way b/c he said he wanted to die like those he killed….or so I heard.
Classic case of “an eye for an eye”, made by the man who did the killing.
