Willow Smith Struggles To Read the Word ‘Congratulates’

Earlier I mentioned the fact that Will Smith’s daughter Willow Smith said she didn’t have much time for studying due to her busy schedule. As a result, she readily admits that, although her parents can afford to hire the best tutors, she is still lagging far behind the rest of the students.

How can a 9-year-old be too busy to attend to her schoolwork? And why aren’t her parents stepping in to make sure that her schoolwork takes priority over everything else she’s got going in her young life?

According to a loyal reader, who asked to remain anonymous, Willow appeared to struggle with the word ‘Congratulates’ while reading a plaque given to her on BET’s 106 & Park recently.

I love the Smiths. I LOVE their children. They’re a very blessed family. However since I saw Willow on BET’s 106 and Park it made me wonder if she was reading at her grade level.

Willow is stunning, I am a fan of her music and her family…but while reading her very first plaque she struggled with the word “congratulates”. The host had to finish reading that word for her. I’m unsure what grade level “congratulates” is under but I’m at work while sneaking this email to you. I’ve found the Scholastic website. Perhaps its on there.

She could have just been nervous, but she has no problem speaking, so she must have a problem reading. Its not like she went to any hood USA elementary. A 9 year old of her background should be reading at least at a 6th grade level. Most child stars (who actually attend tutoring) excel in school. I think Keke Palmer graduated early

I heard about that muppet, and it made me SMH.

On topic, I love the fact that Will and Jada let Willow follow her dreams and be expressive, but I am disappointed in them in regards to her schoolwork. I remember that interview where she said that she was behind children her age. I think she’s a beautiful lil girl, and I wish her much success, but I just hope that they get her on point with her schooling.

My niece is 9 years old and she is starting to learn Algebra at her level. She speaks well and does excellent in all her subjects.

This child needs a well balanced schedule. Part school, part music. Her schedule is no excuse. I don’t want to see this child fed all the glamour of being a celebrity outweighs being an educated human being.

She is already apart of a family that is well established. It is not necessary for her to be a megastar right now. They can balance this, they have the means to do so. If the parents don’t make sure she stays on her level as far as education, then the parents have shown what their values are. Regardless if they are Will, Jada, Joe, or Mary. It doesn’t matter.

Im sorry, I agree with Sandra. If your child can stay in the studio for hours learning lyrics and dance routines and picking it up, then I would expect that parent to make their child spend the same amount of time on school work until the lesson is picked up. The child stated herself that she is having trouble with her times tables and doesnt listen to her tutor, and now her inablility to say certain words. No one is hating on this little girl, its the truth.

Well I must suck at parenting because my private school educated 10 year old stumbles on words I’ve heard her read with no problem suddenly become harder to pronounce when in front of an audience. I want to know how many people sat down and administered a reading and comprehension test to willow to get an accurate score of her reading and comprehension levels? She admitted to being behind in math which is not surprising all kids don’t excel in all subjects no matter the school or the tutoring if it’s something you truly don’t like you are less apt to learn it. And it’s ashamed to attack the parents also when no one is personally in the smith household to know what kind of schooling she recieves. They seem to support ALL of their children. I doubt if their demands are their children have to be entertainers. When Will was on the set of the Karate Kid in China, he flew back every weekend to see his son Trey play football. During Trey’s games, Will wasn’t signing autographs, he sat in the crowd and cheered and supported his son just like the other proud parents were doing. He was Will the proud and SUPPORTIVE dad, not Will the alleged attention whore.

Trey has always played football, he’s good at it and wants to play for college next year. If Will has supported his son Trey since he was in elementary school to play football (something he wanted to do) then why can’t he support his other elementary aged children with something that they want to do (even if it’s in the entertainment field) and not be seen as pimping out his children? I definitely agree that education should come first though!!!

My thing is if your child is involved with extra activities outside of school, then the childs school work better be on point and if its not then the extra activities are on hold. Its not just the girl stumbled with a word, this is the 2nd – 3rd time that she has shown she is struggling. Yes, we do know what the Smiths are doing behind closed doors if the little gilr has stated she has a hard time with times tables (not algebra/geometery), times tables and doesnt listen to her tutor. I remember when Raven Simone was around this age, during interview she seemed educated, Also her parents didnt play that they always said education first.

In my opinion I don’t see why this is such a big issue. I have a 9 year old Goddaughter who is an honor roll student and has been since starting school. Even she may struggle with pronouncing a word here and there. I mean sheesh, you would think the girl couldn’t read at all and struggled the entire time. From hearing her speak she knows how to articulate herself very well. While I did not like the fact that she mentioned how she never did much work with her tutor in a previous interview, the comment posted from the “loyal reader” is just plain reaching. Be realistic here, there are people who read extremely well but may stumble here and there with a word. Also, you can’t forget the fact that she was very excited as you could see, and could have been a bit nervous. It seems like people just love to pint out anything negative. I wonder if this loyal reader has any children, and if they stumble from time to time with a word. I bet he or she would be very offended if someone pointed that out.
