Another gay black male has succumbed to MRSA/staph infection. Yesterday, celebrity hairdresser and makeup artist Dariel Pulliam, who starred in TV's 'What Chilli Wants 2,' passed away after a brief illness. According to his family, he was hospitalized for 2 weeks with a staph infection in his lungs, which likely caused pneumonia. He was 29.

The family is asking for donations to help offset the funeral costs. If you would like to help, please call (410) 800-0379 or (443) 629-3008.

I am writing this post to educate my readers about this MRSA scourge in the gay community. All of us in the gay community know of at least one friend who has succumbed to MRSA infection.

Like Pneumocystis pneumonia was in the 80s and 90s, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is rapidly becoming the #1 killer of people with HIV today.

Last year I wrote a detailed Medical Minute post about MRSA/ staph infections HERE. The reason I'm writing about this super bug again is to bring awareness to this scourge that is gaining a strong foothold in the black gay community.

As I wrote in my earlier post, those who are most at risk for MRSA infections are babies whose immune systems aren’t fully developed yet, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems, such as HIV/AIDS patients.

With the advance of anti-viral medications over the last 15 years, HIV/AIDS is no longer considered the early death sentence that it once was. But unfortunately, due to the increase in MRSA cases, the tide is turning in the black gay community. For black people living with HIV today, MRSA/staph will soon be the #1 killer.

The reason you don't hear much about MRSA/staph in the news is because it's mainly killing young black gay males who continue to engage in high risk sexual behavior without using protection.

Poverty, neglect and denial are reasons why the black community accounts for the highest cases of HIV/AIDS infections today. The mere suggestion that black gays "wrap it up" brings on animosity and resistance.

MRSA causes soft tissue infections, but it can also spread to the lungs (leading to pneumonia) or to the bones and heart valves. Most MRSA skin infections are harmless and resolve within days. The infection generally starts out as small red bumps or tiny blisters, boils or spider bites on the legs and arms.

In the mid 1980s, MRSA was a hospital based bacteria. The bug was able to spread from patient to patient because nurses and doctors did not wash their hands between patients. Over the last 20 years, MRSA has leaped from the hospital setting into the surrounding communities.

Most of us are now colonized with MRSA/staph. MRSA/staph is not a threat to most healthy people. MRSA bacteria lives on our skin, but mainly in our nasal passages and throat.

Staph becomes a problem when it enters the blood stream through a break in the skin such as a cut or scratch. Once in the bloodstream, it is very difficult to treat because MRSA/staph is resistant to most antibiotics. In patients with HIV, it quickly spreads from the original site of infection to the lungs where it causes pneumonia, or to the internal organs.

Signs and Symptoms of MRSA include:

  • Swelling, redness and tenderness of the skin around the wound
  • Foul smelly, pus or drainage from wound
  • Fever
  • Shortness of breath
  • Cough
  • Chills

This has been your Medical Minute.

I don't understand why people don't have insurance? I'm not rich nor poor but I've always had health, dental, and life insurance. Why do these so-called famous people not have insurance and what do they do with all the money they make? If he was so famous why is his family collecting for his expenses? Its funny how "famous" people look down on regular people but when they die the poor ones are left asking for money to bury them?

It bothers me when people do not have life insurance. I hate to see people pass away and then it is a financial strain on their family to bury them. We have to do a better job as a people with estate planning. Stop buying things that depreciate like expensive cars and rims, save and invest in things that will earn you money. IMO

as a government epidemologist i am a little taken aback about the posting of this individual's medical information on a PUBLIC website however i will say that you are right the trending of MRSA infections is EXTREMELY prevelant in black gay males at this time to the point where is is being studied by different health organizations.... I am more distressed by the fact he had no life insurance( IF is this true??) and will be making a donation while i did not know this young man personally how he lived as an adult is none of my business and i pray for his family in their time of sorrow ....

OFF TOPIC his hair was extremely beautiful....

Making a disease a "black gay diseases" is very malicious and unethical IMO. Being that anyone can be affected with MRSA it's a very common disease not only in the black, white, gay str8 community.

Again, although some of the information is informative connecting it to a certain demograhpic is misleading.

However, hopefully people will read and take away something and learn.

He was such a beautiful guy, so sad. It just goes to show that all that Hollywood chit is not as glamorous as it seems. I don't why people think he is a "celebrity" making 100,000. Did I miss something.

I didn't do research or anything but most self-employed people I come across have issues with being insured due to the cost. However, I will say that one could seek life insurance through State Farm, Progressive, and etc.

I myself pay 24.00 a month for 50,000. IF I pass before my mom the last thing I want her to worry about his how she is going to pay for my funeral. She has a policy on me and I have another one through my job.

This is a very sad situation for this family, but what I don't understand is why don't we as a black community encourage life insurance!

My brother died right before his 21st bday in a car accident. I was 17yrs old. We could not bury my brother without help from our family and he was a Desert Storm Vet. I seen how it affected my mother, she was so drained from the whole process especially when the funeral home threatened to put my brother's body on the porch if we didnt pay. I swore I would never put my family in that type of situation. So, at 17 yrs old I got life insurance on me and my one yr old son. Since then I have paid off two life insurance policies for both of us. Life insurance is not expensive maybe $10.00 a month...Don't leave your family with the financial burnden of trying to bury you while dealing with loosing you. It is horrible on your family!

  • lexdiamonz

I don't think sandy making it a "gay" or "black" thing i mean i can't assume what his medical condition was but if he had been ken paves or something CNN and other media would have been all over it.... let's see if BET does something since he was a regular on some of their best selling shows ... I do think as people of color we need to take responsibility for educating and equipping our own youth on issues (health, wealth and otherwise) because no one else seems to give a damn.....

right bc all yt folks help each other out during times of need regarding funerals :coffee: damn blacks.

what does what someone else does with their money have to do with funeral costs? ok they have nice bags and cars. and? that doesn't mean they have to help pay for someone else's funeral. funerals don't have to be elaborate affairs. if u can't afford to have one...then don't have one.

I'm sure research would prove that there are others that have died from it as well that's not black or gay.

So you don't know anyone else that's pass away from MRSA other than black and gays. They claimed HIV was a "gay" diseases. Which also is misleading. Because many drub abusers were affected and passed it on. That's my point, when people make it a "specific" demographic disease it's misleading and others believe they are safe from it.

Nice write up Sandra! I can naturally read between your lines now ;) Dariel is gorgeous...I can't even hate on him LOL The whole insurance thing is baffling to me. Alot of celebs and reg. people are living on borrowed money, but they won't pay insurance premiums. If I can pay for 4 policies, just about anyone can. I just don't get it. Shit I am worth more dead than alive.

Yep...I often listen to the Michael Baisden radio show while I'm driving home from work or the gym. He's very informative person as well. I was shocked when I found out about that information. It's something that you wouldn't think happens. I guess, senior citizens are less likely to believe they will contract a disease if they are having unprotected sex.

His show is really good, very funny too.

Most of us have staph aureus bacteria living on our skin and in our noses. It doesn't harm us because we are healthy. But people who have diseases that weaken their immune systems are at higher risk to get an infection. People with diabetes are in that category. But diabetes by itself does not cause staph infections. I hope that helps?

Hi Sandra...I love your post today. However, you indicated that at least one of us in the gay community knows someone who has succumb to a MRSA infection! Actually, I do not! And you may say that I knew someone but was not aware he/she had MRSA. I would like to say that I have been very fortunate to NOT know someone in the "community" who has passed away from anything. That's truly a blessing. HOWEVER, I do know a child who contracted MRSA and almost passed away from it! So Sandra, I thank you for you insightfully written article on this possible deadly infectious disease that is taking out quite a few people. THANK YOU!

I always joke with my nephews that I am worth more dead than I am alive, I want to make sure nobody has to come out of their pocket to pay for any of my expenses so I have a policy with my job and another policy I took out on myself. I agree he was young and a lot of men and women don't think about the what if's but you should because its a burden on your family to try and come up with $8K's for your funeral. Priorities people get them in order and stop trying to get the latest and greasest Gucci and Louis Vuitton until your main priorities are in order first...

    Oh yeah...Good Morning everybody.

  • http://pearlswindow.com Carrington

This is good information, Sandra. Not many gossip blogs take a minute to educate the reader. I'm on the Infection Control Committee at my job and I have seen it more times than I care to count.

    Good information:

On another note - How the hell can you be 26 and your family need "assistance" with funeral cost? Do these "celebrities" think that they're invincible while they're running around living the glamourous life?

No disrespect, but, c'mon, son! I could see if you were 63 and insurance was just too much, but at 26, you should have been able to get a policy for $12 a month that would have paid off your funeral cost as well as left your mother with a nice little chunk of change after it's all said and done.

But I have another question, could it have been possible that they could have treated it and saved his life, by him having HIV? Like is it necessarily a death sentence for someone with HIV who gets a Staph infection or is there any hope for them?
    _________________

Great question. If you or I acquire a staph infection, our bodies will fight it off because we are healthy. We might never get MRSA again after that. But people with HIV are already immunocompromised. HIV patients get recurrent staph infections because the staph weakens their bodies each time they get it. The 2nd or third time they get MRSA is a death sentence for them.

    ********************************************

until you have had to deal with the death of a loved one, you will not realize how important it is to have insurance. funeral homes are about them dollars and some will work with you but the grief and pressure bursts pipes! even old, poor blacks where i came from had funeral insurance. they paid $1-5 a month into a "society" that, when they died, hosted a lil get together w/sandwiches, had a funeral, and buried them, mostly in pauper's graves.

a funeral plan does NOT include a plot. that's extra. so, you need either life insurance (which can pay for anything) or funeral insurance and a plot. or you can cremate and be done with it.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Birdshu Bird

    Definition
    By Mayo Clinic staff

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection is caused by a strain of staph bacteria that's become resistant to the antibiotics commonly used to treat ordinary staph infections.

Most MRSA infections occur in people who have been in hospitals or other health care settings, such as nursing homes and dialysis centers. When it occurs in these settings, it's known as health care-associated MRSA (HA-MRSA). HA-MRSA infections typically are associated with invasive procedures or devices, such as surgeries, intravenous tubing or artificial joints.

Another type of MRSA infection has occurred in the wider community — among healthy people. This form, community-associated MRSA (CA-MRSA), often begins as a painful skin boil. It's spread by skin-to-skin contact. At-risk populations include groups such as high school wrestlers, child care workers and people who live in crowded conditions.

    *****************************************

I wonder why they don't mention HIV/AIDS. Surely they don't know more than Sandra. Oh that's right, they are not trying to vilify a deceased man who had the audicity to die at a young age. We know there is only one way for gay young men to die.

That's IF they are using those services- we don't know. And Vaughn Green & March's services are not just grand, or over-the-top. Having a small, intimate gathering with a basic casket, and basic transport to the burial site, no frills start at a bit ABOVE $8k for them.

They're probably asking for donations just for a basic burial and THAT'S what is sad. Honestly- I can't name aplace in Bmore where you could get funeral services for under $6k. When we buried my brother, his service was basic and we had a LOT of donated services and using March's, that sh*t STILL came to almost $11k. And they didn't do much but put a blurb in the newspaper, get the casket, let us use their "chapel" for services for two hours, and transport the body. That little bit of stuff - $11k.

MRSA Infections Are Now Falling in People With HIV

Researchers in Atlanta report that cases of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), an aggressive and difficult-to-treat bacterial infection, have dropped considerably since 2007. These data, published March 17 in the journal AIDS, could signal the beginnings of a reversal of a trend of sharp increases in the infection during the past decade, particularly among HIV-positive men who have sex with men (MSM).

MRSA outbreaks generally occur in one of two venues: Health care institutions, such as hospitals, or in the general community. Since the mid-1990s, cases of both health care–associated and community-acquired MRSA have been increasing, and some of the circulating strains have become more virulent and more resistant to antibiotics than their predecessors.

Scientists and health care providers have expressed alarm at the increase in diagnoses of MRSA in people with HIV during the past 10 years, a rise that coincides with—but greatly surpasses—increases in the general population. Their alarm has not only been about the increased spread of the infection, but also about the growing difficulty of treating it among HIV-positive people and about the frequency in which it returns after being treated.

A previous study of nine metropolitan areas in the United States found a drop in cases of health care–associated MRSA in the general population. Intrigued by those findings, Alicia Hidron, MD, and her colleagues from Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, set out to assess trends in MRSA diagnoses within HIV-positive participants in an Atlanta Veterans Affairs (VA) medical system cohort.

Of the greater than 3,000 people enrolled in the VA cohort, Hidron’s team gathered data on 226 MRSA community-acquired infections that occurred in 168 HIV-positive people between 2002 and 2009. The majority of the cases, 94 percent, were community-acquired. Among those diagnosed with MRSA—nearly all of whom were black men—the average CD4 count at the time of their MRSA infection was 350. Fifty of the cases occurred in people with CD4s under 50, and 46 cases occurred in people with CD4s over 50 but under 200. Just over half of the cases were among men who have sex with men (MSM), and 14 percent were in injection drug users (IDUs).

MRSA infections were more than twice as likely to occur in MSM and IDUs as in people with other HIV risk factors. People with CD4s under 50 were more than four times as likely to develop MRSA, and those with CD4s between 51 and 200 were about twice as likely to develop the infection. Conversely, people taking antiretroviral (ARV) therapy were nearly three times less likely to develop MRSA.

Hidron’s team found that MRSA cases rose dramatically—more than 17-fold—between 2002 and 2007 but then began falling just as quickly between 2007 and 2009—when cases dropped by about 65 percent.

Though the study could not isolate the causes of the drop in MRSA infections, the authors theorize that several explanations are possible. First, they acknowledge that previous studies have found that changes in sex and drug-using behaviors and networks are often the primary driver of community-acquired MRSA, and that could be a factor here.

They also acknowledge, however, the significant difference in the risk of MRSA in people taking ARVs, compared with those not on treatment, and in people with higher versus lower CD4s. “To our knowledge, this study is the first to suggest that [ARV therapy] may result in a reduced risk of MRSA infections,” they state.

A third explanation may be that if hospital-acquired infections are dropping—as documented in the other study—there may also be a lower overall spread of MRSA in the general population, leading to fewer cases in people with HIV.

The authors are encouraged by the steep drop in MRSA cases among their cohort, but they are calling for further studies to help understand why this occurred.

Morning all! (wipes crust out of my eye).....

I didn't make it through all the posts but I wanted to touch on the life insurance issue. In the event you have a pre-existing condition such as HIV/AIDS, you will not be able to get a life insurance policy. The companies consider you a high risk and will not bother drafting a policy. How do I know you ask? When signing up for the 3rd policy outside of my employer, I was advised that I had to make an appointment with LabCorp to get a blood sample as the company providing the policy wanted to ensure I was healthy. I am not all insinuating THIS young man couldn't get life insurance. I'm simply saying this is one of the reasons I know you wouldn't be able to get a policy.

(scrolls back up to read comments)

  • aqtpie

I think this is an excellent, very informative post. I do think we could have done without this young man's picture and the first paragraph of this post though, we knew how he died from the R.I.P. post.

  • Terri B

@ YSoSerious, That post pretty much confirmed what Sandra has said above, the only difference was it was saying there has been a drop in the # of cases reported, which still doesn't mean that it's not an issue.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8pUAnrVWUkk YSoSerious

    @TERRI B

It does support some of what Sandra said but not the what seems to be her main point; that MRSA is becoming the number one killer of gay black males.

I'm sure they'll be more studies but I've haven't yet found anything to completely support Sandra's theory.

I do think she provided some good information but I disagree with her spin on it. It may make people less likely to take the good from the bad.

    The documents we all need:

    1) A will. Even if you only live in a studio apartment with three cats and some bills, folks need to know where things will go, and who will get whatever items you may deem special. Get it notarized!!!!!

    2) A list of all accounts and bills. This includes banking and credit accounts and updated passwords. I know, I know, it might get misused. However, keeping it all in a locked fireproof security box can alleviate that worry. Make sure a trustworthy person knows where the key is, or at least the box location so it can be opened.

    2) A living will. This includes assigning power of attorney if you are incapable of handling your affairs, and DNR (do not resuscitate) orders if you are in a situation where you cannot speak for yourself.

    3) Last wishes. Make it known how you want your remains to be handled in the event of your death. It is a hard topic to discuss, but worthy of it. For instance, I want to be cremated, and no viewing, as well as organ donation. I would rather funeral money go to my niece's education or a charity in my name. My mother, on the other hand is against these things, and I feel strongly that my wishes should be carried out. Having others know what you want will prevent your final wishes from being ignored.

    4) Insurance. Life insurance is essential. Just make sure you keep up with the beneficiary assignment. You may find that someone you were close to but now estranged from could end up with everything and cut and run. Also, it doesn't hurt to prepay for your own funeral. A little at a time adds up, and will give everybody peace of mind.

Keep all this in one location, and file copies with your local City Hall records department.

  • free

yes, rozb, on the insurance, PLEASE UPDATE if you get divorced and/or remarried. it goes directly to who you LIST as a beneficiary so, just because you marry somebody's ex (or divorce your spouse) doesn't mean you automatically get it (or your new spouse). if the beneficiaries are not updated, the ex will get the money!

and i also agree with a PP on qualifying for life insurance. with job insurance, you get a certain minimum but many times you have to pass a physical to get any more than that. i think the new obamacare eliminates this provision but i'm not sure.

Black people feel oh nothings gonna happen to me Im fine, I'm healthy etc. So instead of taking $10.00-25.00 a month and pay for life insurance we buy coach purse, get out hair done, nails, clothes, go to the club etc...I have insurance through my job, but I also have seperate insurance policies for my son and myself. If something ever happens to me I do not want my son struggling to bury me or vice versa.

  • http://www.safeb4sorry.com Sean Dade

Although this is an unfortunate incident that has occurred with this young man Dariel Pulliam, although no one can determine when someone will pass away, this hardship that his family now faces could have been avoided. Most parents assume they will pass away before their children so they don't concern themselves with making sure their children are covered. It has been my experience from dealing with a multitude of individuals that purchasing Life Insurance and Health Insurance is always done when you really need it, however every insurance company has pre - existing condition clauses and will either charge a higher premium per month or not cover you all together. Losing a loved one or needing medical attention is never easy but it should not become a financial burden. Take the mature steps and act today to get covered as we tell all of our clients it's always better to be Safe before Sorry!

It's always best to purchase life and health insurance before any diagnosis of any type of infection, virus or disease. It's also important to purchase Life Insurance at a young age preferably around the age of 25, that is when most people will fall off of their parents coverage.

I'm the Co-Founder of http://www.safeb4sorry.com where you can obtain quotes for Life Insurance,Health Insurance, Dental Insurance and Burial Policies for older Parents from multiple carriers. Anyway, back on topic.....SANDRA! this post was very factually informative to those who are ingnorant to the causes of staph & what excites this disease to the worst fatal stage. Yesterday when I read the post announcing his death, and it was stated he had been in the hospital and died of staph, my question was what was the underlying reason for him going in the hospital in the first place. The general public have no clue of what an immune system is or how it should function healthy manner. I'm weary of people who always catching a cold more than 3-4 times a year and think its okay or normal. NO its not, its a sign of a weak immune system. Risky lifestyle and poor diet and nutrition contribute to the breakdown of a weak immune system, therefore any other auto-immune diseases can be deadly. In most cases, someone without HIV/AIDS do recover from staph infections with medication protocols. So its very possible he had some kind of auto-immune disease to begin with prior to getting staph.

  • https://sandrarose.com Sandra Rose

@ Audacious2 Thank you for everything you wrote  The difference in our community is that we don't frequent the doctor enough to even find out if our immune system is compromised. Whites run to the doctor at the first sign that something is wrong. We can't blame it on insurance because Atlanta has 180 free clinics. It's important to educate ourselves about staph infections because it is killing HIV+ people now more than ever before.

    _______________

If you looked at the HIV stats then you would know why I said more gay black HIV+ males are dying. The reason it's affecting them more is because they rank highest in # of HIV cases. Their life expectancy was higher due to the advance in anti-viral medications. But over the last 10 years I personally know 10 HIV+ males who died from staph infections in their lungs. That's an alarming figure for one small community. But you won't hear about it until white HIV+ men start dying from staph infections.

  • datsmdubya2u

Sandra is right about MSRA. People without HIV can get it but it is usually not serious. My mother got it but it was clearing up even before her doctors appointment. She didn't feel sick, she didn't have a fever but she did have swollen node on her neck which is why she went to the Dr. And no she's not HIV because our whole family has been tested. turns out she got it from one of her piano students whose parents told her he had it about 3 weeks before on his hand. She must have touched his hand and touched her forehead. Anyway the dr gave her antibiotics even though he thought is was clearing up (just in case) it was gone within 2 days of taking the pills.

^^^^^^and sometimes the death certificate can say inconclusive, etc, but I get what ur saying. His friend/ex posted an interesting tweet April 1 that eluded to not taking care of our health "can take you OUT." And so it did. I feel really bad for this young man.
