Dog falls out at his master’s funeral

An emotional photo of a dog mourning his master at a funeral has captured hearts everywhere.

Petty Officer Jon Tumilson, 35, was one of 38 Americans killed in the helicopter crash in Afghanistan this month. He was remembered by around 1,500 mourners at his funeral Friday in his hometown of Rockford, Iowa, at the Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock Community School.

Mr. Tumilnson’s Labrador retriever, Hawkeye, led Tumilson’s family into the school’s gymnasium where the funeral was held. Hawkeye then stretched out on the floor below the casket and refused to leave his master’s side.

The photo was taken by Mr. Tumilson’s cousin, Lisa Pembleton, who then posted the touching image to her Facebook page.

Ms Pembleton wrote: “I felt compelled to take one photo to share with family members that couldn’t make it or couldn’t see what I could from the aisle.

In response to the outpouring of messages on Facebook about Hawkeye, Nikki Virgilio, a friend of Mr Tumilson wrote:

“I can happily report to you that Hawkeye was willed to one of J.T.’s good friends, the same one that took care of him whenever J.T. was deployed overseas. So he is assuredly in a loving home. J.T. was an amazing being and his dog is no different.” Source

It’s uncanny how dogs seem to sense when their owners are sick or have passed away. They go into mourning just like adults.

I had a cat named Chelsea for 15 years. She had hay fever and in her last months she went blind. She used to run into the walls and ish. Her last few days she cried all night so we put her in the garage. She either died of old age or from fumes from my dads truck. I really don’t know.

This is very true Sandra. This story makes me just so sad… I remember when that tornado tore through Joplin, MO a few months back and folks said you could drive by houses in ruin and see dead bodies lying around and the dogs would be circling their owner’s bodies whimpering and crying. I remember when I got very ill a few weeks ago I was bent over in pain and my cat was running around me meowing and crying loudly…animals are something else!

dogs rly r connected to their owners. i watched a show on discovery where this dog would meet his master at the train station each evening for many yrs. after the owner died the dog would continue to go there bc he was mourning & that was the last place the dog saw him..

I remember when a family member’s father died, he was homeless, and all of his friends took care of this dog. A group of homeless men came into the chapel and sat in the back. We heard a dog outside wailing the entire service. They had to keep the dog from jumping in the back of the hearse. When I tell you that was the saddest thing I’d ever seen. This story reminded me of that. One of my cousins allowed the men and the dog to ride in his truck for the internment.

@Lakes, i feel ur pain bew. i had a jack russell i adored, but he went crazy after i had my son. he was protective of me but jealous of my son. i had to give him away. i had him for 7 yrs havent seen him since. i miss him to this day iono his whereabouts

I feel your pain, I had my dog die right in front of me years ago. His heart blew up and he just laid there panting. I was touching his belly and his heart slowly got more and more faint. That was the first time I experienced anything like that. Then I let out a cry because I was hurting so bad and he kind of turned his head to look at me one last time before he timed out. Okay I am depressed for sure now…

Yes dog do know when owners are sad or sick. They stay closer than normal to you. For instance, when one has cancer, your body has an odor dogs can smell. Google dogs and cancer detection in your free time, interesting reading.

Cat’s CAN be azzholes for sure…they are moody creatures. But my cat was always affectionate and loving from a kitten…he loves being petted and cuddled next to…just a loving cat who’s in tune to stuff…but he does have his moments where you can’t find his azz for chit!

@ One time, my bew and I had a brief (1 month) breakup (cuz I wasn’t being as ‘preciated as I should have been…BET THAT CHIT DONE CHANGED) anyhow, we have 2 American Bulldogs (Drama & Trouble) and Drama was sooo attached to me, that she would not eat for days, wouldn’t move from the living room window, didn’t use the bathroom…nothing. She dropped like 5 lbs and EVERY KNOWS that’s the equivalent of like 30 human lbs. I still had to make sure my bew caught the hint, but I came to pick up Drama and she stayed w/me for the rest of that month! Her spirits picked right up then!

@ohpretty yep, they can smell the sickness. one was blindfolded & still sniffed out the cancer vics were id’d with 100% accuracy. i was amazed. also, some cats can smell death. in hospice they sit outside the door of the next person to die!

@Daisy, we dont usually agree on much, but um, I’m there with you. My mom had a cat, so in essence WE HAD a cat. I never liked dogs, but been thinking about getting one. Dilemma for me is if it pisses/shits, gets sick, loses an eye, etc, I can’t just get rid of it. Well, I shouldn’t just get rid of it.

True story: years ago I was traveling on business and my flight got re-routed to avoid a blizzard. I had to stay with my co-worker’s sister who happened to live in the city that we got routed to. She had this cat that looked JUST LIKE Garfield, only he was FATTER, I’m talking about rolls, hips and he walked with a switch. Anyway, I had a bag of snacks in my luggage and that little fcker started digging through my chit. I leaned over and tried to shoo him away and he hissed at me like his life depended on getting at those goodies….FAT AZZ!

I’ve done a bit of research and from what I’ve found, cats stealing babies (or anyone’s) breath is a myth…my guess is that one cat in the history of the world did this one time and it’s an ongoing urban legend… I hope so anyway, I love my baby but I’ll knock him stupid if he tries that mess with me or my future babies…

That is such a sad picture. The puppy just couldn’t take it; his master is gone and will be truly missed.

We have a dog…and at first my hubby was reluctant to get him. My friend was having twins and gave us her dog because it would be too much to handle once the babies come. Anyway, we’ve had him for 9 months now and I love him dearly. I go home during lunch (most days) to let him out to use the “potty” and check on him. Hubby who has finally accepted him, just called (he’s working from home today) to say that he and our dog just finished cleaning the house. I said what? He said yea, he helped me drag the laundry to the laundry room. I washed his blanket and pillows. Now he is sitting on the floor watching TV as I finish up some reports. I smiled because my hubby was so resistant to liking the dog, even though our dog tried his best to be my hubby’s friend by sitting extra close to him, or following him where ever he walked.

Dogs are truly man’s best friend.

@Yardgirl, for a long time hubby wouldn’t walk our dog because he is so little (7lbs. My hubby said real men don’t walk little girlie dogs. But on night a big dog came into our yard while our dog was trying to “potty” and our dog was scared. Hubby heard me yelling at the big dog and came outside with w/ no shoes on and ran the big dog out the yard. He then told our dog “Don’t ever let no dog punk you in your own yard..stand your ground, this is your property.” WTH? That is when I knew he liked our new doggy.
