Charla Nash, the woman who was mauled by her friend’s chimp has a new face thanks to advanced medical technology.
According to published reports, Charla Nash underwent a face and hand transplant in May at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. The anonymous donor of the face and hands was an unidentified woman on life support. Doctors revealed Nash’s new face on the “Today Show” this morning. Nash, who was too weak to be interviewed, can feel her jaw and her sense of smell is returning.
Nash, 57, was critically after her friend’s 200-pound pet chimpanzee turned on her while she was helping her friend lead him back inside his enclosure.
Nash was blinded when the chimp gouged out her eyes and tore off her lips, nose and both hands. The rampaging chimp was shot and killed by police after a brief hunt.
Nash will eventually receive prosthetic eyes at a later date. She also underwent surgery to attach donated hands but her body rejected the hands after Nash contracted pneumonia. Another attempt will be made to attach new hands at a later date, according to her doctors.
Chimps are aggressively jealous of their mates and are known to viciously attack the faces of their sexual competition.
