The principal of Brookside Elementary School, in North Carolina turned in his resignation yesterday after suspending a 9-year-old boy for 2 days for calling a teacher ‘cute’.
Jerry Bostic, who is White, suspended Emanyea Lockett, who is black, for two days after the boy told a classmate he thought a another White teacher was ‘cute’. A substitute teacher overheard the conversation and told Mr. Bostic who suspended Emanyea for sexual harassment.
Speaking to local WSOC news, Emanyea said: “I was talking to my friend and I said Miss Taylor was cute. That’s all I said.”
Bostic turned in his resignation after 44 years with the school system.
“To me it’s a really sad final note to a career that I have found very satisfying and enjoy working with kids,” he said. “I really don’t believe I was treated fairly.”
Emanyea’s mother, Chiquita Lockett, told a local news reporter she thought the punishment was too severe. “It’s not like he went up to the woman and tried to grab her in a sexual way,” Mrs Lockett said.
Mr. Bostic’s picture has already been scrubbed from the school’s official website.

Well, in that case, you might as well do what so many want anyway: lock up all black kids. Because kids are kids, they are still learning, and may not know that what is cute and endearing to them, may not be cute and endearing to someone else.
Never-the-less, I would never suspend a child for saying the word “cute.” This is a very crude and ugly world, and that child could have been saying or doing something way worse. If education were the centerpiece here: I would say that this has been a VERY teachable moment for this principal and other racists like him.

apprently the kid “whispered” to his classmate that he thought the teacher was “fine”. Substitute teacher was ear hustling and reported it to the principal! The accusations that were “later” made about the kid being disrespectful before to classmates and teachers has not been substantiated so are baseless and without merit and that is why the schoool board has now decided to jump ship after initially vowing to stand behind the principal and the school b/c of the Zero Tolerance policy.

My thought is even if he has been disruptive, bad, etc in the past he should’ve been punished then for each separate infraction, not collectively which it sounds like here. Of course I said my a few of my teachers/coaches were cute. I think it was in HS, but these suckas all knew they were the sugar honey iced tea. I think it was more lunchroom/school bus chatter than anything. I am sure it was innocent, but that’s not the world we live at the moment. We didn’t have zero tolerance and whatnot when I was in school. The only thing people really got suspended for was arguing and fighting. Being suspended in elementary and middle was unheard of unless you were fighting.

My sixth grade teacher was my first real crush but I was too shy to ever speak it aloud to ANYBODY so…I still don’t know.

@ Lovezoe from all of my sexual harris meant cases that have been logged against me and my hands it’s defined as (loosely) when a person finds your jokes/emails/conversation or behavior to be offensive that are sexual in nature. Unwanted touching, eye hustlin, being too close and aggressive, quid pro quo (a little this for a lil bit of that) I learned not to terch people anymore unless they invited me to do so. This little boy clearly didn’t do anything remotely near sexual harrassment. Just another case of racism being alive and well in the South.

If he only hugged her and had no other disciplinary record? No, I wouldn’t want him suspended. Sent to the principal’s office for a conference and a call home, yes. The same way I feel about the little boy in the above story. We just don’t know everything. Not calling the mom a liar, but who knows whether she did or didn’t receive information. What if little fellow never sent notes home to mom. Rarely do they call or send letter by USPS anymore. If he only hugged her and had no other disciplinary record? No, I wouldn’t want him suspended. Sent to the principal’s office for a conference and a call home, yes. The same way I feel about the little boy in the above story. We just don’t know everything. Not calling the mom a liar, but who knows whether she did or didn’t receive information. What if little fellow never sent notes home to mom. Rarely do they call or send letter by USPS anymore. … I love my family … I really do BUT I think they are way to easy going on my teenage cousins. They don’t go up to the schools, talk to the teachers or anything. I talked to my sister about this and we decided to try and do something … This year, all of their bad asses have improved and I’m assuming its because I gave all of the teachers my cell phone number … The teachers call and text me and know I’ll be up at the school acting an azz … Was I out of place for doing that since I don’t have kids? Possibly… but I’d rather try than just rely on the parents and have my little cousins fail

@JMO you are right. It is proven that parents who are more involved in their child’s education have a better chance at succeeding. I don’t want for parent-teacher conference, I go talk to the teacher at least monthly about the progress of my two. If you wait until May or when something hit the fan, why would the teacher want to work with you. Even if you can do nothing but call due to working, that’s better than nothing.

A black boy called a white teacher cute nothing more and nothing less, there are alot of kids some that have school boy or school girl crushes on their teacher nothing harmless that would ever come from it. This is a nubian young man that told another student that the teacher which is white that she was cute. See the news tells have the story and this school is predom white, this princepal took this a little too far and not only supsened him but brought him up on sexual harassment charge. the boy is nine really I guess what I thought of what is sexual harassment is totally different from what the principal thought his def was. I know its in all schools but here in the south there is alot of desegreation going on in the school system here and the alabaster teachers and students are doing everything in their power to discredit and stop those of color to achieve a education. They have this thing called shuttle stops where kids that want to go to a decent school or at least try to go to a magnet school they have to get shuttle to that school instead of going to a stop close or around from there area. The school system here is doing everything in their power to stop ours from getting an education. My son is in the school system here and he is only five and he has told me more than once the alabaster kids have hit him, tore his shirt and he has done “the right thing” by telling but when he does the teacher which is alabaster tell him to have a seat and stop snicthing as she tell him and he goes to an all albaster school.

I know its in all schools but here in the south there is alot of desegreation going on in the school system here and the alabaster teachers and students are doing everything in their power to discredit and stop those of color to achieve a education. They have this thing called shuttle stops where kids that want to go to a decent school or at least try to go to a magnet school they have to get shuttle to that school instead of going to a stop close or around from there area. The school system here is doing everything in their power to stop ours from getting an education. My son is in the school system here and he is only five and he has told me more than once the alabaster kids have hit him, tore his shirt and he has done “the right thing” by telling but when he does the teacher which is alabaster tell him to have a seat and stop snicthing as she tell him and he goes to an all albaster school.

I used to have to ride past there daily and 95th and Dan Ryan was crackin from 3-5. My cousin went to Corliss so we used to have to come for backup. Half my guys was Gangstas though. I know I’m late with putting in my 2 cents but after reading the comments I wanted to say you guys only have half of the story. Here in Charlotte (yes Im in the area), news investigated even further and the student actually said she was “fine” in a suggestive manner. Trust me, children his age are very smart and he knew what he was doing. Here in Charlotte we start F.L.E.B.U.S in the 3rd or 4th grade… and that was when I was in elementary school back in ’98. I, like everyone else, first believed the kid was suspended due to race because this happened in “hicktown” Gastonia but now I do feel that his punishment was necessary after hearing the other half of the story.

schools are really on the PC these days like they never used to be. my son was suspended in the 5th for sexual harrassment because a classmate said he felt violated when my son who was the boy’s friend and another boy told him he had ‘man boobs’. it was all in play and i did tell my boy that you shouldn’t be teasing others but to suspend for sexual harrassment?!? but here in the bay people want to think they are so progressive but some of this is just ridiculous IMO. he is jr now in HS so this was a minute ago.
@Lovezoe…….Agreed, Soror!!!! I am a teacher and these kids have no decorum. I think that we need to teacher our kids about respect and how they need to address and deal with adults. They need to understand that there are limits not meant to be crossed. If he gets away with it that leads the next one to cross the line and the next one to cross an even bigger line.
I sure hate that the minute people start to hold people responsible for their actions, it becomes an issue of someone being an Uncle Tom or being self-hating. That is some bull!!!!
