Director George Lucas’ corny, fictionalized account of the heroics of the Tuskegee Airmen in World War II finished a respectable #2 at the box office this weekend.
According to Box Office Mojo, Red Tails took in more than $19 million over the 3-day weekend. The #1 box office hit this weekend was ‘Underworld Awakening,’ which raked in $25.4 million.
Lucas, who financed Red Tails with $6 million of his own money, could have made a more realistic movie rather than the romanticized Star Wars remake that it became. But he chose to go with the bells and whistles rather than the harsh realities of flying escort for heavy bombers in Hitler’s cold war in 1944-45.
The Tuskegee Airmen were the first black military aviation bombers to see air-to-air combat in the U.S. military. The name ‘Red Tails’ was derived when the pilots of the 332nd Fighter Group painted the tails of their P-51’s red.
Red Tails stars Cuba Gooding Jr., Terence Howard and Tristan Wilds (“The Wire” and “90210”). The movie was technically directed by Anthony Hemingway (“The Wire”) and written by John Ridley (“Three Kings”) and Aaron McGruder (“Boondocks”), who worked with a budget of nearly $100 million.

At last. A movie that my father can go see.
Why is Ne Yo in this movie?
GOOD MORNING
I WENT AND SAW IT WAS GOOD
My mom tried to go see it this weekend and she said the theater was sold out!
I had no interest in seeing red tails and I didn’t appreciate the marketing behind it
I thought it was a very good movie, & Neyo did exceptionally well! I expected the others to perform the way they did, being seasoned actors!
So I wonder how much of a profit did Lucas make after he paid everyone one off for doing their part with this film….
(A movie in which I didn’t go see)…. Just thought to point that out!!!

I guess I wasn’t paying attention. What was wrong with the marketing, EB?
Haven’t seen this yet, but I am looking forward to seeing it this weekend! I am always interested in how Black History is portrayed in Hollywood…..
I enjoyed the movie, yes it was a little corny but I enjoyed seeing a movie with plenty of us in lead roles that didn’t involve dressing in drag, shucking and/or jiving.
What’s up with the patches on Cuba’s pants?!
Am I outdated with the latest fashion or do anyone else find them pants a sight for sore eyes?!
Im sure Mellody will help George put them profits in all the right hot pockets, I mean, markets.

@SunRise, Ebony’s men fashion editorials are always a tad off.
Michael B. Jordan could so get it

My perverted 67 yr old uncle thought it was a new porno movie with red woman with red azzes..

I thought it was a good movie, well acted. I didn’t care for action/flying scenes but I’m not an action movie girl. Overall I give it a B. Good movie, but not a GREAT movie.
I typically lurk, but I don’t not understand why not support the movie. Why do we always have to find a reason not to support each other? It was the one of the few African American movie with out a cross dresser or any truly negative characters made in the last couple of years. Just so you know, The showing I attended in Gwinnett County had more non-black in the seats.
Goes back to lurking….
@ rip pillow pet. To me it was marketed with a sap story. I kept hearing see this movie or they will stop making movies with black cast. I rather hear see this movie because it’s a good movie with great actors.

Umm if they were suppossed to be set back in the Tuskegee Airmen days…their clothing is spot on…
I didnt get a chance to go see it but i was planning to soon. I heard it was good.
Although it was slow in some places and could have gone a lot deeper, I thought it was a good movie. I took my 11 year onld son to go see it because my grandfather, his great grandfather was a Tuskegee Airmen in a different squadron. Although it may not have been written and directed to our expectations, I appreciate the effort.
Now, Auntie, lets dig a little deeper and find some info on David Oyelowo that played Joe “Lightening Little”. His character was just as imporant as Nate Parker’s but hasn’t gotten as much shine. He made for some great eye candy also! I haven’t seen him prior to this film (that I know of).
I think they all did a descent job and we should all support this film!

The budget was actually 58 million
…they aren’t gonna give any black production a 100 million dollar budget unless some funny black man puts on a dress #medeabigmommashouse
Going to go see it this week. I hate to hear so many Black folks making excuses about why they wont go see it.
It’s a movie with Black writers, Black scorer and a Black leading cast without a whole bunch of unnecessary violence, coonery, drag-queens or other bs that we usually see movies about.
Black folks aint never effin satisfied. Yes- it had a white Director. Guess what….for ANY movie in Hollywood to hit a screen (Tyler Perry/Spike Lee included), some white Jewish guy has to have a had in it. It’s just the way it is.
Most folks complaining will be 1st in line for a another “Friday” sequel but not for an educational, fact-based movie on the respectable men of our culture.
Makes me sick.
I kinda wanted him to be truthful so that I could make a history lesson out of it.
If you think of George Lucas you think of action; I think this is a good draw for the kiddos and our generally fast paced society…if you want to get the MOST story get the HBO DVD seires Tuskegee Airmen. Its the best hands down.
@ CD, the available cast of The Wire was invited to participate in this movie, including Cheese from The Wire AKA Method Man

It’s true Hollywood ain’t trying to make very many films about black people. Has this film not been #1 or #2 in the box office it would be hard to find a black movie in a theater(except Tyler Perry) at least now they know there’s a solid audience for black casted dramas

Exactly…
People are looking for the movie to be something more when its not.
Its just a good movie about the Tuskegee Airman and combat… that was it. Some people look for more when it is what it is.
Herrro Spongebob u still there?
I think we complain to much about “our” movies too. Movies are just not as good as they used to be, in general. Studios know exactly where they can make their money. Tyler Perry knows where he can make his money. Its not a black or white thing.
Many people are likely to see the film “Red Tails,” but they won’t have the same experience that a hundred or so moviegoers had Saturday morning at a private screening in Cleveland Heights.
The movie is George Lucas’ paean to the brave black aviators — the famed Tuskegee Airmen — who battled racism at home so they could fight Nazi Germany in the skies over Europe. Lucas is said to have spent more than 20 years and millions of his own dollars to make and distribute it.
But most films don’t come with audience members who lived to verify what was unfolding on the screen.
Roy Richardson, who served as an enlisted ground crewman for the Airmen, said “Red Tails” was “better than the first one,” referring to the 1995 HBO movie called “The Tuskegee Airmen.” He said this effort was more realistic.
Richardson of Cleveland, Edward Lunda of Akron and Thomas Austin of East Cleveland all praised the film for “telling the story. That’s the way it was,” Austin said after the screening.

Most folks complaining will be 1st in line for a another “Friday” sequel but not for an educational, fact-based movie on the respectable men of our culture.
Makes me sick.

I know this is
but I wanted to share a funny story with y’all from Saturday,
So, Thursday, my cousin calls me and says that her husband is out of town and that her son (my cousin) needs to be taken to the Y to make up his swim lesson that he missed on Wednesday and because she would be working/getting in late Friday she didn’t want to have to get up and be to the Y at 9 am for him to swim. So I told her that I would do it, no problem. Well, Saturday rolls around and I’m at the house it’s like 8:00 and we’re getting ready to leave. Well, I came in thru the garage, so when I got in, he was still in bed watching cartoons. Now mind you, he’s 3 and he can talk but he isn’t giving presidential debates just yet.
Long story short, when we get ready to leave, I tell him: ”Ryan, come say bye to momma before you leave because she’s still in bed and she’s tired from working really hard.” So when we get to her room door, she’s laying on her side of the bed and when we walk up, she says: ”come give momma a kiss” he slowly walks up to the bed smiling but then he stopped like maybe 3 feet from the bed and just stared at her smiling… Then he goes up to her and she says: gimme kiss and this fool pulls his head back real fast and looks at her like
. I was looking at him funny and his moms says: ”what’s wrong” and then this fool balls his face up real hard and steps back another foot. I was looking at him crazy and she said: ”what’s wrong, my breath?” and he kept his face balled and and started shaking his head up and down. By that I was
but then she asked him what it smelled like and that fool said: ”doo doo.” When I heard that,
I laughed until my right lung collapsed. The stuff that children say!
When I commented on the pants, it was all in good humor! I was NOT dissing this movie at ALL…
And I was just pointing out that I didn’t go see the movie this weekend, but I guess I should have put this weekend on the end because I do plan to take my family out to see it “this weekend” coming (Lord’s will). I for one am very proud of our black people; Men or Women that is doing anything positive!!!
*steps halfway out of lurking mode*

Of course there is nothing wrong in supporting a movie. On the flip side, there is nothing wrong in not going to the movies at all, or seeing another movie.

you are right, there is absolutely nothing wrong with supporting a movie. You mentioned being taken back to slave status to support THIS movie which is what I disagree with. I am not gonna go back and forth with you about it cause you are entitled to your opinion and im entitled to mine.
The time and energy you put into obsessing about Beyonce, Jay-Z and their “Pillow Pet” as you say, you could use that time and energy to do something useful and constructive…

Who mentioned those two in this particular thread again? I don’t think that was me.
And unless you can go through the pockets of every black person and say that they can afford to go and see this movie, you have no fight in this fake battle.
The movie is number 2 at the box office, so what are you squalling about?
I have DishNetwork and they were running a behind the scenes look at Red Tails. It was very cute. They had some of the remaining Tuskegee Airmen involved in the process. They were correcting things as small as the way a hat was tilted. I learned alot like, Lt Little is actually a Brit, the casting person also casted for The Wire, and Other stuff.
Mrs. Mommy I think what people are trying to tell you is that this is one of those times People need to come together and support. It’s promoting something positive and nothing else should matter

nothing wrong with that… just dont go into some BS social reason why you didnt… You just didnt want to see it… And thats fine.
Hell Ill take Shawshank Redemption over Amercan Gangter anyday.
@MzWhang
Of course not…Antwone Fisher didn’t have sex, drugs, and semi-automatic weapons being used for idiotic reasons on innocent victims in a predominately Black and economically down-trodden neighborhood.
Antwone Fisher didn’t pander to the dozens of somewhat incorrect and exaggerated stereotypes about the Black disenfranchisement and how we lack the ambition to change our circumstances but would rather dwell in it.
Why would we rush out in droves to go see Antwone Fisher? That movie wasn’t funny! And there weren’t any real “G’s” in it.
Why should folks waster their money on bullsh*t like that?

So you’re illiterate as well, huh? I see. Okay.
Small fact: I wasn’t referring to the folks who saw the movie…just folks like YOU who make up excuses about being deduced to slave status to be forced to support the movie.
Context clues, hon, context clues. Sometimes you have to read the prior comments to get the gist of the later ones. Now start at the 1st comment and read DOWN.
Mkay? We all fall down the first time.
Although I have every intention of seeing this film, I agree with posters like @EB who don’t want to be strong-armed into seeing the film because it’s a “black cast” or has anything “black” attached to it, and that we need to support it because films like these won’t be made if we don’t, etc. etc. etc. I actually get very TIRED of seeing these rants about that on Facebook and other outlets and it’s somewhat of a turn off because if the movie isn’t good, I won’t want to see it whether it’s an all black, white, brown, red, or yellow cast. That’s just me
…And, I know Hollywood is racist and closes a lot of doors on projects because they don’t think they will make any money, but as a consumer I want to see a film because it INTERESTS me, not because I should feel compelled to support something that may not even appeal to me in the first place… If I wanted to see Underworld this weekend and see Red Tails next weekend, I should have to feel guilty about that…but like I stated earlier, I’m glad the movie did well and many theaters were sold out in my city, so this is positive good news!

That’s just me …And, I know Hollywood is racist and closes a lot of doors on projects because they don’t think they will make any money, but as a consumer I want to see a film because it INTERESTS me, not because I should feel compelled to support something that may not even appeal to me in the first place… If I wanted to see Underworld this weekend and see Red Tails next weekend, I should have to feel guilty about that…but like I stated earlier, I’m glad the movie did well and many theaters were sold out in my city, so this is positive good news!

Exactly. And very well put.
@Dougie i just read it. Do i crack him over the head and tie him up before or after he tells me “haaaaaaaaail no” when i suggest this? lmao no but forreal do i put it on him and leave it running the whole time or just turn it on right before the “moment”?

But who was strong arming anyone? I seen a lot of post on FB saying to go support it as well because of its history not because of its cast, but those were my peers saying that, not the people who were marketing the movie. How would you know if it would be good or not without going to see it?

So you’re illiterate as well, huh? I see. Okay.
Small fact: I wasn’t referring to the folks who saw the movie…just folks like YOU who make up excuses about being deduced to slave status to be forced to support the movie.
Context clues, hon, context clues. Sometimes you have to read the prior comments to get the gist of the later ones. Now start at the 1st comment and read DOWN.
Mkay? We all fall down the first time.

You actually cannot clean up the fact that you came in here like gangbusters calling black people n*99as because you mistakenly thought that this movie wasn’t doing well, when the movie is number 2 at the box office.
You went on a rant stereotyping all black people as seeing a number of movies that aren’t entirely the tastes of all black people. And I can honestly say, I don’t know what the tastes of all black people are.
But one thing I do know: Black people have earned the right to see whatever movie that they want or to use their monies in the way that they see fit—-without being called a n*99a for it or being told what they should do and what they should see.
@Terri B
Maybe YOU didn’t feel strong-armed, but many people make sweeping generalizations about folks who don’t go to see these movies and make assumptions that they aren’t supportive because it doesn’t have this, that, or the other in it….my point is that maybe, JUST MAYBE, they have no interest in the seeing the movie for simple reasons, that’s their right as a consumer. I go see movies once I hear about the reviews…this movie has mixed reviews, which means I need to see it for myself…but, I’ve follow the Underworld movies since they first came out so my interest may be more intense for that film…my point is that I shouldn’t have to feel guilty for not rushing to the movie and spending my dollars on a movie JUST BECAUSE it’s “black” and “positive”…

It makes no differe, Kdub. Because the money is not going into your pocket or mine. And it was still number 2 at the box office, so there was no reason to go on the attack on black people as a whole and calling them n*99as. I see most of you had no problem with that at all. But you do insist on telling other black people what they are supposed to do in their leisure time and with their own money. Something you wouldn’t abide yourself.
In case yall didn’t know “THE MOVIE CAME IN #2 AT THE BOX OFFICE”. LOL, If I hear that one more time!
@OTB
Agreed, I just don’t feel like that concept applies to this movie…
Pillow, I don’t think the rant is about you not going to see it, it’s you and others “reasoning” behind not going to see it.

I believe that that saying “P vs P or T vs T” is only for the sound of it, not the spelling, different people pronounce it differently.
So stop being mad gal folks only mean that they are saying the same thing, but it just sounds differently.
I hope that reads right to you

It wasnt justification. I was pointing out that Fe and I say the same thing in different ways. You can say it phonetically if that helps you.

In order for George Lucas to make a profit the movie would need to make upwards to $100 million in box office ticket sales (factoring in the cost of the movie which was $58 million appox and additional marketsing and distribution) so we are talking baout $75 million at least in ticket sales. The point is since he put it out there it would be nice to show the man some support just to give him a pat on the back for pushing forward instead of taking the easy road of making it a made for tv or straight to dvd project….ok carry on….

Nobody should feel strong armed into doing anything. However don’t complain about the lack of decent black representation in film. The movies have to make money so if we support it the next black movie maybe something that interests you. So you don’t care for WWI or action movies fine but try to see it anyway because the next black movie might be of a topic more to your taste. However if this movie doesn’t make enough money (yes I know it did well the 1st weekend but it’s got to continue to make a steady stream during its run), that will be used as an excuse not to make the next one. And that topic might be interesting to you. I wish we were at a place where we didn’t have to “stick together” but it’s not there yet. So lets help each other out. Not just entertainment either. Let’s help each other day to day too.

*******************************************
And thats a shame. Cuz it’s why we don’t have more quality Black movies out. “We” don’t support US. But “we” will turn up in droves for coonery. Hollywood will NOT make movies that dont pull in at the box office. So I for one WILL go see a movie just cuz its “us.” Even if I’ve been told it sucks. Why? Cuz I want to see MORE BLACK FILMS being made. The ends justify the means.
that is all

You guys are cracking me up!
@TerriB Thank You! Black folks ALWAYS encourage each other to go to the movies in masses when its a “positive or historical movie abt us” now w/social media we get it even more via twitter/FB. I don’t know why that wld deter somebody from going to see the movie. If you don’t want to see Red Tails fine.
I always make it a point to go see positive movies staring us opening weekend if I can. I saw Great Debaters/Antwon Fisher/Miracle at St Anna/akeelah n the bee etc. Not everybody does or has to do the same but I know I make a extra effort so we can get MORE of these movies. There isn’t any sec that Hollywood is not studding us and our movies.
Now we can’t have and support black movies when did that become such a bad thing when ppl complain its because of lack of good black movies but when a black movie is made (abt our history) I might add then it can’t or shldnt be labeled as a black movie. George Lucas made it a point to say this was American history although it was our story.
Very interesting comments
i knew the movie was going to be lackluster. how many effin times can u tell a the same story. And when you look at the cast, it’s like yeah, I’m still not captivated enough to go see this. It aired on HBO years prior -same story- so hats off to the studios for tanking $35+million into this one. they were saturating twitter and FB with this bs all week long. go see it, great movie. if they make the budget back I’d be surprised. I dont support movies simply cuz the cast is all black. I’m a bigger supporter of originality. this wasn’t it.
Oh I forgot to add the reviews were pretty accurate. The movie is well acted and entertaining but needed a better storyline/plot the HBO movie tells the story better but that’s becuase they showed them being trained and the race relation aspect. I give Red Tails a B-
George Lucas financed the entire movie out of his pocket. No studio would touch it. He came out of pocket to the tune of $93 million ($58 million production + $35 million distribution).
It’s a decent flick, but I think HBO’s The Tuskegee Airmen is a better movie. Nonetheless, I commend George Lucas fighting to get this story on the big screen and prove to Hollywood honcos that movies with a predominate black cast can make money. It was extremely gratifying to see black folks depicted in a positive light as intelligent, determined, brave, and loyal.
Strawberrys and cream says: I wonder are they gonna do a movie with the tuskegee men they gave syphilis too in an experiment
There was a movie made about that, Laurence Fishborne and the lady who played in A Family that Preys, starred in that movie. I can’t remember her name or the name of the movie.
AndThenIHitMyDougie…the director is not white. He is very much black and has been posted in several pictures along with the cast. Just wanted to point that out. You were right about the other folks: black composer, black cast, and black screenwriter. And knowing George, I’m sure some of the producers are black.

Thanks, MzTee!
I was turned off by the piss poor marketing strategy for the film. Maybe if they focused more on the storyline and actors and less on race and mind games, I may have supported it. In case mofos didn’t know, George Lucas is a card carrying member of “Hollywood” and 20th century Fox produced as well as distributed this movie along with Lucasfilm. Hollywood was very present.
I have no problem supporting good work, but I have a serious problem with mofos trying to mindf*ck me into supporting a project to “prove Hollywood wrong.” Hollywood saw an opportunity based on kneegrows’ adoration of all things Tyler Perry, and they used similar tactics. Looks like it worked based on the comments.
Going to see this tonight with the kiddies. My folks is an extra in it, so I’m super juiced! Bay Area!!!!!!
I don’t see how Lucas used any kind of tactic/marketing scheme he SPOKE the TRUTH not NEW TRUTH but OLD TRUTH so anybody using Lucas comments about Hollywood not making black films can miss me cause THEY DON’T break their neck to get our movies made and have never really cared to
Also, folks can KNOCK TP (No, I don’t like all his movies but I admire his story, drive and passion) until the cows come home BUT because of him and his success MORE black movies are being made each yr.
NEYO is SO fine…. until he removes that hat. SMDH
