A masked gunman opened fire at a sold-out Colorado theater during the midnight Friday showing of “The Dark Knight Rises,” killing 12 people and injuring at least 50 others, according to published news reports.
The bloodshed occurred at a multiplex theater in Aurora, CO at around 12:30 a.m. The theater is near the scene of the Columbine high school shooting in 1999.
The gunman, James Holmes, 24, (pictured above) stood at the front of the theater and released a canister of gas, setting off pandemonium. Witnesses say theater goers began sputtering, choking and coughing as the gunshots rang out.
“Witnesses tell us he released some sort of canister. They heard a hissing sound and some gas emerged and the gunman opened fire,” Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said at a news conference.
Officers apprehended Holmes near a car in the parking lot of the theater. A gas mask, rifle, handgun and at least one other weapon were located inside the theater, according to Aurora police.
Holmes reportedly told police he had bombs or bomb making materials at his home. SWAT teams and the bomb squad evacuated the suspect’s apartment building, but no live bombs were found inside his apartment. Police report “items of interest” were found inside the apartment.
There were reports that as many as 15 people had been shot dead. Police say dozens of injuries may have been caused by shrapnel and the chaos of theater patrons fleeing the theater. The injured ranged in age from 3 months to 45. Some of the injured are listed in critical condition. The dead and injured included young children.
President Obama released a statement saying: “Michelle and I are shocked and saddened by the horrific shooting… We will do everything we can to support the people of Aurora in this difficult time.”

This fool came in with automatic weapons, shotguns. Had four guns total, tear gas, a gas mask, and a bullet proof vest. Didn’t matter he was ready for a massacre. My heart is breaking. Anything can happen anytime.

Woke up around 5:15 this morning, starting my normal routine of checking my email.
To see THIS story on Yahoo first thing, just made me shake my head & pray.
Just like Lakes said, LIFE AIN’T SHYT to some people these days.

This is too sad. This makes my stomach hurt to know. I bet when it is all said and done, this sicko is one of those who figured in order to make a name for himself and to “Go down in history” is to kill innocent people. This is how these hell-spawns think. Just twisted!!!

Condolences to the victims. I’m going to go see it tonight though, already got my tix.
I feel so bad for all the victims and their families as this is a true tragedy. This is also a WAKE UP CALL THAT ALL TERORRIST DONT WORSHIP IN MOSQUE SOME OF THEM LOOK “AMERICAN” just like you and I.
I thank God everyday for my father teaching me how to use a weapon and not be scared! I got a baby girl to protect!
Just days ago, the movie buff website Rottentomatoes.com, turned off all comments on the “Dark Knight” posts due to all the death threats made towards the reviewers. But the news probably won’t mention that.

I saw this article and read some of the post this was just on Tuesday. I don’t understand why people take entertainment to the heart like this. It really bothers me that the mother of the suspect had a feeling her son was involved as soon as she caught wind of the story. It makes you wonder what dark characteristics that person holds. This is so sad, nothing is safe anymore.

I just saw this on the news. What a tragedy. And my kids have the nerve to get mad when I don’t let them do things on their own. Smh and praying for all involved
I never understood why people take babies to the movies, but still, it’s ur effin right to do so. This is a horrible, tragic story. Unbelievable.

Its a sad world we live in and things lile this constantly make you afraid of having kids in this world. The movie theatre is like a family spot and you shouldnt have to worry about taking your kids there no time of the day or nighy. Tax dollars shouldnt be wasted on sociopaths like that, just give them the gas chamber and get it over with
As expensive as movie tickets and snacks are until there are metal detectors I won’t be going to a theater. Call me crazy, but this tragedy was my worst fear that or a fire in the theater.
I live here in Colorado and the media is reporting that the gunman has his apartment filled with explosives and “booby traps” for the authorities. They have the whole complex evacuated and said it may take days to diarm all the devices in the apt. He was definitely looking to hurt more people, as many as possible regardless of age or race.
