About two dozen officers on horseback stood guard outside the apartment where State Trooper Brian Encinia lives in Katy, Texas.
Encinia is the officer who pulled over Sandra Bland during a routine traffic stop on July 17 that escalated when Bland resisted arrest for assaulting the officer.
Dozens of protestors attended a rally organized by Quanell X, who believes Encinia’s actions led to Bland committing suicide in a Waller County jail cell on July 20.
“Had this police officer’s behavior had not been what it was, and many of us believe his behavior was illegal, this sister perhaps today would still be alive,” said Quanell X, who is the leader of New Black Panther Party in Houston, Texas.
“So he is complicit in the murder of sister Sandra Bland, and that’s why we’re going to his house. And many have said, ‘well why go to his house?’ Because these devils have been coming to the black community, raiding and destroying black children and black families for decades. So now it’s time for us to let them know that when you murder our kids in cold blood, we will also come to your neighborhood and let you know: hands off of our children, hands off of our women.”
Meanwhile, the Houston Chronicle newspaper angered African American readers by publishing a cartoon parody of the traffic stop that preceded her death.
