A friend of church shooter Dylann Roof was arrested Thursday, The State newspaper reports.
Joseph “Joey” Meek Jr., 21, (in circle) provided shelter to Roof, right, in the days before he walked into a Charleston, S.C. church and gunned down nine black people in June.
The FBI hand delivered a letter to Meek at his trailer home on August 6. The letter informed Meek that he was a “potential target” of the investigation into the church shootings. The letter made it clear that Meek would be arrested at some point in the investigation.
Meek is under investigation for concealing knowledge of a crime beforehand and for allegedly making false statements to investigators. Both charges are felonies.
Meek’s girlfriend, Lindsey Fry, 19, told The State newspaper that Meek was picked up by federal agents at his workplace just before 4 p.m.
She said Meek called her on his cell phone as he was being taken into custody.
“He just said, ‘They want to talk to me, but I think I’m going to jail,’” Fry said.
Fry shared a trailer with Meek, his mother and his 2 brothers.
Meek told The State newspaper on Tuesday he does not believe he committed a crime by housing Roof in his trailer.
But in a previous interview with the newspaper on June 10, Meek said he and a buddy was drinking vodka with Roof who bragged that he would commit a mass shooting at a church 7 days later.
Meek told the paper he didn’t believe Roof would carry out his morbid plans.
Meek said he called authorities when he recognized Roof’s image on the news after the mass murders.
Meek faces a sentence of five to eight years in prison if he is convicted.
