The mother of a 9-year-old Chicago boy who was lured into an alley and shot is being criticized for misspending Gofundme donations to purchase a new car.
Karla Lee, the mother of Tyshawn Lee, is under fire for using donations on a new car for herself. The money was intended to pay for Tyshawn’s funeral expenses.
Lee was reportedly so distraught over her son’s death on Monday, that she had to be hospitalized. But she apparently recovered quickly, and went shopping for a new car as soon as she had access to the cash from public donations.
Lee, 26, posted several videos on Instagram Saturday morning explaining why she bought a new car. But after Instagram followers slammed her for buying a car, she deleted the IG posts.
Lee explained that she bought the car for her protection. She said she was afraid to ride the bus or walk because Tyshawn’s killer(s) are still on the loose.
“If a m—–f—– telling you they gonna try to take your life, too, because of whatever the f— is going on … they already took my son. I walk to work, I get on the bus. I’m not trying to be a target for nobody,” Karla Lee said in one of the Instagram videos.
Tyshawn’s Gofundme account raised just over $17,000 intended to go towards Tyshawn’s funeral.
But rather than use the cash for its intending purpose, Lee purchased a new car.
Many of the donors asked for their money back.
Lee deleted her account in response to the avalanche of negative comments.
Chicago city leaders and private donors raised $54,600 in a separate reward fund that Lee does not have control over.
I don’t think it is wrong she bought a car. The funeral expenses are covered now. I think she has an overage in the money. I wouldn’t feel safe walking or catching the bus if my son was just murdered either.

I’m not sure that a funeral home offered or did not offer to pay for the funeral. I live in Chicago and I’m hearing it both ways. If there is an offer for a free funeral, then mom should have offered to repay the funeral home or give them some of the money; but not take the ALL the money and buy a car.

Funeral services was donated by Leak’s funeral home, and St. Sabina church. The city is not paying for nothing. And Father Michael Plaeger, from the church is one of the one who created the fund to catch the murder.
You know personally I have always been cautious of donating to these types of incidents or any for that matter. Think about it – what in the world are they going to do with ALL that money??? Even if you go all out for a funeral the most u will pay is 10,000 dollars. Then you have that money left over – they are not going to give it back.

We are living in a new day. Ain’t no shame in some folks’ game. Some of these Gofund me accounts are so misleading. They say one thing but then it turns out to be something else. Knew someone who started one for a man who needed chemo. Later on he ‘altered’ it and said it was a travel fund so he could go back and forth to be with the patient. Then when the man died, it became the ‘travel/funeral expenses fund.’ I don’t mind helping folks but i can’t lie, i’m a bit apprehensive when it comes to GoFundMe.

A funeral does not cost $72K so what is she supposed to do with all that money. It wasn’t gathered for her to replace her son but to make her life a little easier and cover expenses. Transportation would be one but the order makes her look bad.

I love to shop. I really do…and I shop constantly. I even use shopping as a pick me up if I’m feeling a bit off. I understand retail therapy better than most. I didn’t allow my children to walk alone, even if there was no adult, they traveled in groups of 3 children or more, but some children were allowed to travel the neighborhood alone, because people knew them and watched out for them. We can’t control what the mother and father do with the law or the money, and since I can’t. I would rather focus my energy on praying for the child’s spirit and the grandmother who tried to do right by him, when she took him in. Perhaps they should have created the GoFundMe for the grandmother and had her be the one to access it, but that isn’t the way it went. I don’t know the mother’s background and how she was raised, but something tells me that it wasn’t what a lot of us were exposed to and her being a teenage mother is no excuse, as there are plenty who have excelled in life and motherhood. I just would like to see the focus go back on finding the killers of this baby and off the parents. Have we even heard from the grandmother? The police have reported that they know who it is. They just need a bit of time to get to make sure all of the evidence has all of the t’s crossed and i’s dotted. It would do no good to arrest and have to let the person go because of a stupid error in the investigation.
If it is in fact a family member the police will probably not arrest them until after the funeral out of respect for the deceased, as long as they are not a flight risk or a danger to others, they are being watched closely.

If a person sets up a fund and that money specifically goes to a certain cause then she had no right to use that money for her own selfish gains. We don’t have control over what she did, but people are calling her out on how unscrupulous she is. Why wasn’t she concerned about her baby’s protection when he was alive? I have no respect for this woman.
We can dislike it all we want, but have no control over it. I get that this is the topic and people are discussing their feelings on it and this is mine. I don’t know her to respect her as a person, but her actions are definitely not favorable. Because it was a fund in her name she had a right to do as she wished with the money, whether we like it or not. But yes, it was selfish and certainly not what people donated the money for. I just wish people would not mention her or the father any more, as apparently any attention is good attention to them.

Agreed. The father is covering for her. Why can’t people see they did this for money. There are crazy greedy parents these days who drive their kids into bodies of water to drown, lock them in freezers, and hide them in basements for years for insurance payofffs. So why can’t people believe two desperate gang bangers who weren’t even taking care of their child would do this. For one, Karla Lee didn’t have custody of her son. The grandmother did. She also admitted in the four videos that she released on her ig that she spent the money on the car and she doesn’t care about what the public thinks. She stated that her son would have wanted her to have the car and that she is scared. She isn’t that scared because the funeral is still public not private. Its only one video that is being circulated but in fact it was four in total. By the time the media start reporting on misappropriated funds, she gave face to face interviews which she loves & stated that she didn’t use the gofundme for the car. She said that she was already saving for a car. She stated on her fb on Oct 23rd that she can’t wait til she get her new whip because it is stunt season and that she loves sugar daddies because they get you what you want. She got her face slashed in August by some girls. She constantly gets Dui’s and is always on house arrest. The dad is fighting a gun charge in court as we are all typing. Also, the dad and 2 other individuals in September jumped on meaning a 3 on 1 fight with this dude from that was affiliated with another gang. That fight was on video & posted on fb but has been taken down of course lol. The dad was all in the comments section of the fight video dissing the opposing gang. How do I know all this stuff, their social media pages are public and people were screenshotting and reposting. Sometimes it is good to be nosey because the world since they both put us in their business can see what sorry parents they are and what scammers they both are. Its funny how the dad posted on fb that he had nothing to do with the gofundme page, but he made his own selling t’shirts. Really. Just sad. They both need to go somewhere & stay. The funeral and other free offering even hairstylists were offered to them. They took advantage of the public. Social media isnt all that bad because it help expose them and use their own words against them.

But, after reading this thread, sadly, I believe this woman was somehow complicit in her son’s death. Sociopaths walk amongst us all the time, I’ve seen them in my own family!
