An Art Basel patron was stabbed by a mentally disturbed woman during an attack that witnesses believed was part of the show.
The victim, 33-year-old Shin Seo Young, was stabbed in the neck and left shoulder with an X-Acto knife.
Miami Beach police identified the attacker as 24-year-old college student Siyuan Zhao of New York.
Police say Zhao stabbed Young after Young confronted her for following her too closely around the art exhibit. Neither woman knew the other.
Miami Beach Detective Kathleen Prieto told the Miami Herald Zhao “continuously” followed Young around the art show, “bumping into her several times.”
After Young was stabbed she sank to the floor, bleeding profusely from a neck wound.
Police arrived quickly and found Zhao pacing around the room.
“I had to kill her and two more!” Zhao told police after she was taken into custody. “I had to watch her bleed!”, Zhao said according to an arrest affidavit obtained by the Miami Herald.
Young was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
