Hip hop scholar David Banner, 42, and singer-turned-reality star Lyfe Jennings, 38, nearly came to blows during a tense town hall meeting in Atlanta on Tuesday.
Banner and Jennings joined hip hop VIPs Jeezy and Tyrese Gibson on a panel discussion held at the Hope Church in Decatur.
The “Real Strategy For Change” meeting was called to find solutions to ease racial tensions in the black community after 2 black men were killed by police in Louisiana and Minnesota last week.
But things quickly got heated when, according to Channel 2 Actions News, Banner suggested that the black community force the police to suffer financial and physical consequences for their actions.
“You sound crazy!” Jennings yelped. “I’m a tell you, you sound crazy!”
“What we going through is crazy,” said a male voice.
What we going through is crazy, but we ain’t gonna create more [unintelligible] by telling these people to bring f_cking guns against the po-lice!” said Jennings as the crowd stood and clapped.
“That’s stupid! It’s stupid!” he said as the two men squared off on stage.
“Hold on,” said peacemaker Tyrese, standing between the two men. Tyrese reminded his friends that his daughter was in the audience.

There were other moments that were powerful and they AREN’T being shared by the media. I think what people fail to realize is that when people are passionate about what they believe in, conversations can get heated. Just think… They are quick to represent those slain by the police in a negative light (mug shots, police records, FB posts, etc.) instead of simply acknowledging the loss of life. Judges too. Two of the cops here in the Freddie Gray case have gotten off by a judge, sadly. Goodson first wanted a jury, but changed that when he saw the other cop get off for prosecutors being unable to prove case. So of COURSE they’ll want a bench trial. Has been the case & the judge refuses to step down. Just today (getting voted by the city & he’ll get it most likely), Goodson will get unpaid wages in the amount of about $87,000. Porter’s trial got hung by a jury & I’m STILL STUCK on these verdicts.

violence is not going to do anything either except cause government to react and institute martial law. the reason peaceful protests have not worked is because they have marched without a tangible and concrete objective. they have marched to get their point across – to bring attention to the matter – but ultimately they still rely on oppressors to institute change and configure solutions to our problems. that does nothing. you have to look at these issues like a job and a project that needs managing.
they have identified the problem. go and gather reports, research, statistics to cite the issue and back up your stance with facts – census data, etc. then, identify specifically policy that you take issue with. then, propose solutions to address those specific problems and a budget analysis of how much it will cost to implement. THEN, march… bring attention to city council. request those meetings with congressional leaders. THEN boycott until someone is willing to sit down with you. THEN, give your presentation to city council……
they’ve been marching all of this time but i haven’t seen any reformation plans of action… that’s been the problem.

I think that as a people we are extremely complacent, forgiving, and at times, simply afraid. If you are complacent (ok) with the fact that you no longer have to use rear entrances, you can ride in the front of the bus, and your child can attend school with yt’s then you are not going to be able to comprehend the anger and frustration of this generation/movement. You are oblivious to the fact that we have symbolism and no substance. Those of us that are discontent, unafraid, and unforgivingly fed up with the bs are tired of being tired. Arguing amongst ourselves is not the answer. We have to learn how to have a conversation even when we disagree in a rational manner. There’s no need to name call or get heated, because that’s what they want us to do. I agree that we need to take another route, but violence is not going to solve anything at all. Yes approaching the problem from a different objective makes sense but retaliating in a hostile manner is only going to heighten their (police) made up sense of fear of us. They are going to be more forceful with their approach and murder us in droves. We are already on high alert , soon we will be in a war zone literally if we react with violence. For every problem there is a solution, but we must figure out a plan of action and EXECUTE. I tilt my hat to the people that are marching and protesting but at the end of the day where does that leave us. Half are missing work or if they are business owners are missing money. Nothing is getting accomplished and we’re back at square one. The media film and report, officers stand on the front line ready to shoot anything that moves, the president makes the same speech every time, the media dig for a mug shot, the mayor of the area try to calm the protestors down by making false promises. It’s calm for about two weeks and Bam another police shooting! Serial Killers that’s what they are! That’s how most serial killers operate, they hunt their prey and attack. Although their different as far as physical feature they still have the same MO at the end of the day. Most hide out for awhile and start the spree over again. Think about it, who’s to say this is their first time killing one of our brothers and sisters in this manner? They’re to comfortable with doing it, which makes me believe that this a pattern and they have done it before. They just were not caught, that’s it. One solution that I offer is how about generating a petition to have legal actions brought against these officers. I mean I really don’t know but I do believe we must start making an example out of those who are abusing their position. There has to be something that can or will protect us. I like David Banner and Lyfe , I think they both have some strong beliefs however let’s channel that frustration and direct it at the ones that we are really angry at. #HOLDTHEMACCOUNTABLE!!!

Because who cares about a group of people protesting? No one. But, if the protesting is accompanied with something that is actually felt, that’s a different story. Or power is economics. Hit them in the pocket. If enough people do it long enough, it can be effective. But, as I stated earlier, I understand why people may promote violence.
