Douglas County authorities are actively searching for 21-year-old Shontori Gooden who they say shot and killed Nyla Foster, also 21, in a fight over a man.
Channel 2 Action News reports Gooden shot Foster on Saturday in a Lithia Springs parking lot after they argued over a man.
A friend of both women, Kelia Thomas, said she stepped between the women to break up the fight.
“I ended up breaking up their altercation and (thought) everything was fine,” Thomas said.
Gooden then allegedly produced a gun and shot Foster in the thigh before fleeing the scene, the AJC.com reports.
“I just heard Nyla screaming my name,” Thomas said. “It’s horrible. I mean, she was somebody who never got mad at anyone.”
Thomas said she was preparing to drive Foster to a hospital when she saw a sheriff deputy and asked for help.
Foster died from exsanguination — or massive blood loss from the severed artery in her thigh.
Thomas, Foster and a friend Tashia Smith had recently moved to Georgia from Lakeland, Florida, Channel 2 News reports.
Thomas said the fight could have been avoided. “It really wasn’t anything to argue about.”
Gooden is described as 5 feet 5 inches tall and 160 pounds, with hazel eyes and piercings on her face and tattoos on her neck.
Anyone with information on Gooden’s whereabouts is asked to call Crime Stoppers Atlanta at 404-577-8477. You can also text information to 274637 or visit crimestoppersatlanta.org.
Tipsters are eligible for a reward of up to $2,000.
