On January 20, 2017, Barack Obama and his family will move down the street from the White House into a rented 8,200 square foot Tudor castle in the upscale Kalorama neighborhood.
The Obamas are remaining in Washington, DC until their youngest daughter, Sasha, graduates from the prestigious Sidwell Friends School.
But some believe Obama assumed he would be succeeded by Hillary Clinton, and that the rental house would become sort of a White House annex.
That may have a ring of truth to it. Rumor has it that Obama’s senior advisor, Valerie Jarrett, is also moving into the nine-bedroom house with the Obama family.
According to Zillow.com, the $6 million mansion rents for a modest $22,000 a month.
The home is owned by Joe Lockhart, a former press secretary and senior adviser to President Bill Clinton.
Mr. Lockhart and his wife, Giovanna Gray Lockhart, an editor at Glamour magazine, moved to Manhattan where he is executive vice president for communications for the National Football League.
Obama isn’t the only prominent politician in the exclusive neighborhood. The European Union ambassador to the United States lives down the block, and Gérard Araud, the French ambassador, is just around the corner.
Tony Podesta, brother of Hillary Clinton’s embattled campaign manager John Podesta (of WikiLeaks fame), lives 2 doors down from the Obamas.
Also on the block is the Islamic Center where Muslims go for daily prayers.
