A man and a toddler were killed in a drive by shooting in a West Side Chicago alley on Tuesday.
The man and toddler were passengers in a maroon sedan driven by a 20-year-old pregnant woman when a gunman opened fire on the car around 1:30 pm.
The woman and her 26-year-old boyfriend were rapping to Chief Keef’s “Love No Thotties,” when a gunman approached the passenger side door and sprayed the vehicle with bullets.
The woman’s boyfriend, who was on the passenger side of the car, was apparently the gunman’s intended target. The man was shot multiple times and pronounced dead at the scene.
The woman, who managed to escape from the car on foot, captured the shooting while recording herself on Facebook Live. She was shot in the abdomen and is listed in stable condition at a hospital. Her unborn fetus also survived.
The woman’s 2-year-old nephew, Lavontay White Jr., and her boyfriend were both hit in the head.
According to the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said paramedics were able to revive the baby at the scene, but he later pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital.
The woman’s smartphone was still recording as she ran into a nearby home screaming, “Call 911!” and “I got a bullet in my stomach!”
Moments later she is heard telling someone she can’t go to the hospital because she doesn’t want to go to jail.
Johnson addressed the media in a news conference Tuesday afternoon.
“This has got to stop somewhere. Our children shouldn’t have to keep paying the price for our inability to hold repeat gun offenders for their actions,” Johnson said. “My gut is telling me when we finally find this guy, we’re going to find he’s a repeat gun offender.
“We have very promising leads, we have video,” Johnson said. “There’s no doubt in my mind that we’ll find him.”
Police believe the shooting was gang related. The deceased man is a documented gang member. There are no leads in the case.
