Actress Gabrielle Union explained why she is still childless after marrying NBA star Dwyane Wade, 35.
The 44-year-old actress says she has struggled to fall pregnant by her husband of the past three years.
In her new book, We’re Going to Need More Wine, Union writes that she underwent several rounds of in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments while attempting to fall pregnant.
The process hasn’t been easy for Gabrielle, who revealed in an excerpt from her new book, that she’s lost several babies while trying to start her family.
“I have had eight or nine miscarriages,” Union writes, according to an excerpt obtained by People magazine. “For three years, my body has been a prisoner of trying to get pregnant – I’ve either been about to go into an IVF cycle, in the middle of an IVF cycle, or coming out of an IVF cycle.”
The Being Mary Jane star plays a TV character — an upwardly mobile news anchor — who also struggles to conceive a baby in her mid 40s.
Wade’s infidelities — including siring a son with a groupie — didn’t dampen Union’s love for him. She writes that she and her husband “remain bursting with love and ready to do anything to meet the child we’ve both dreamed of.”
Dwyane has two sons, Zaire, 15, and Zion, 10, from his first marriage, shares a three-year-old son named Xavier with former girlfriend Aja Metoyer, and also raises his 16-year-old nephew, Dahveon.
After Union and Wade married in August 2014, she became stepmother to his boys and changed her outlook on children.
“I never wanted kids,” she shared. “Then I became a stepmom, and there was no place I’d rather be than with them.”
Union’s book, We’re Going to Need More Wine: Stories That Are Funny, Complicated, and True, hits bookstores on October 17.
