Georgia School Ends “Civil War Dress Up Day” Amid Uproar

Civil War Day

A Georgia school’s Civil War dress-up class activity that taught students about the history of that era has come to an end. Apparently some of the parents became upset and misunderstood the learning objectives.

Big Shanty Elementary School in Kennesaw, Georgia has ended its “Civil War day” after parents and others reacted with outrage.

The mother of a 10-year-old black boy told a reporter that a classmate dressed as a plantation slave owner approached her son and told him “You are my slave.”

In a letter to the fifth grade parents, a Cobb County assistant superintendent said the student dress-up activities related to the Civil War will end, effective immediately.

Big Shanty Elementary is located about 25 miles northwest of Atlanta.
